Timid & tired Sarno sex comedy about radio evangelists
lor_1 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Aimee Semple McPherson, the pioneering radio evangelist of the 1920s, would seem a most unlikely subject for a porn video satire, but Joe Sarno targeted her in the underwhelming PAY THE LADY. Rachel Ashley is easy on the eye as "Amy", but this quickie has little to offer.

As Amy Sindell McFerguson, she broadcasts on WAMY Radio, with a sign on the wall hastily scrawled to that effect -one of the cheapest props I've seen in a long while. Setting is Queens, NY, with her helpers consisting of sexy Robin Lee and Latin heartthrob Vladimir Correa (actually a male stripper with a gay following, quite familiar from numerous guest shots or co-hosting assignments on Robin Byrd's popular cable-access TV show in the '80s).

Randy Paul is a minister listening to an Amy broadcast, who has his lovely wife Leslie Ann (Cara Lott) infiltrate Amy's organization in order to find out the secret of her lucrative success. As usual in Sarno scripts, Leslie Ann is an old high school classmate of Amy's, from Grand Rapids, Michigan.

This non-starter of a plot line is perked up briefly by the appearance of Rick Savage, affecting a thick Yiddish accent, as Archangel Irving. He's come to set Amy straight concerning her misuse of religion, but this being porn he shtups her instead.

All the sex scenes take place in a poorly decorated bedroom set, with rattan chair marking it as the same set used in other Sarno epics -looked like the LOVE POTION #9 bedroom.

SPOILER ALERT:

Rick and Cara meet out on the street and without benefit of special effects react to what they say is a lightning bolt. You have to take it on faith. Sure enough, divine intervention has occurred, so when they enter the bedroom set, the bed is covered with ashes, the remains of Rachel & Randy, struck down by the Lord. Video is so hastily made that while there is a brief discussion of what to do with the ashes, Rick and Cara immediately get on the bed to hump and we never find out if they removed the ashes -it's a telltale "who cares?" moment.

Cast, particularly Ashley, is disinterested in their work, merely stripping and having sex in the most regimented manner. It's not erotic in the slightest and if Cara, Rachel and Robin didn't look so good it would be completely unwatchable. Sarno's favorite prop, the oversize massage/vibrator machine, makes its customary cameo appearance.
