Jasper and the Watermelons is entertaining despite racist imagery
tavm4 September 2006
I've just seen this George Pal Puppetoon from 1942 called Jasper and the Watermelons and while there are some imagery that may make it racist (like the watermelon with the black boy and the fact he lives in a shack with his "mammy"), this is actually a very entertaining short about a boy's temptation for something he really likes! A scarecrow tempts Jasper about a place with all the watermelons he can eat. When Jasper eats one, seeds fall out of his ears! There's also a wonderful musical number involving various watermelons singing. If you still feel what I have just described is racist, by all means avoid. But if you're interested in all stop-motion puppet animation, this one is worth seeking out.
