A lot of cheese and not enough tricks
TheLittleSongbird12 November 2017
The Van Beuren Tom and Jerry (as said already not the famous cat and mouse, this is a human duo that lasted for just under 30 cartoons, 29 if memory serves correct, between 1931 and 1933) series was interesting but uneven and not easy to rate as an overall whole. At the series' best, the cartoons were good, very good in a few cases. At its worst, they were really bad.

Don't agree personally that 'A Swiss Trick' is one of the worst Tom and Jerry cartoons. It's not particularly good let alone great, but it has its good moments and is a step from the previous cartoon 'Jungle Jam'. There are good things, the best thing about it is the music score which is the high point of even the worst cartoons and is so beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and full of energy, doing so well with enhancing the action. The Swiss setting is nice in detail and there is some reasonably good synchronisation with the music in some of the movements, more with Tom and Jerry themselves.

Great moments are too far and between, but the image of the Swiss cheese on a leash is priceless. The highlight though is the ending, which is not just a strong contender for the most bizarre ending of a Tom and Jerry cartoon but it is also one of the most absurdist gags of the series. Seeing as the humour in the series is all about absurdist bizarreness, this is meant in a good way.

However, once again, most of the animation didn't do it for me. There are worse-looking cartoons in the series, at least the backgrounds and some of the synchronisation was decent, but it is not one of the most visually interesting ones like their debut 'Wot a Night'. Too much of it is crude and simplistic with a fair share of static moments, particularly in the drawing of the stereotypical supporting characters. There are certainly far worse and more offensive supporting character stereotypes, but the ones in 'A Swiss Trick' are neither interesting or particularly funny.

It's a paper thin cartoon in story once again, basically song and dance interludes strung together with the only glimpses of a story being towards the end, and there are not enough gags that work in comic timing or imagination in order to not make that matter. Likewise with any inventive tricks, except the cheese on the leash. The absurdist bizarreness is certainly here and when it does appear it's good fun, there's just not quite enough. Tom and Jerry are a little bland.

All in all, watchable enough and nowhere near among the worst of the Tom and Jerry cartoons (neither is it one of the best) but less than great. 5/10 Bethany Cox

I guess the moral is, don't eat the cheese.

Well, the good news is that this isn't the worst Tom and Jerry* cartoon I ever saw...though this isn't saying a lot. For every three terrible cartoons the Van Beuren folks made with this duo, you might then get one that is decent and watchable.

This short finds our dull duo in Switzerland...and with all the usual cliches. Most of it was pretty dull and there was some annoying musical number. However, the gag with the Swiss cheese was decent enough....even if it might make you want to give up hole-ridden cheese!

*Back in the early 30s, there was a DIFFERENT Tom & Jerry from the cat and mouse from MGM that we've come to love. This original Tom & Jerry is who the review is about...the other duo make terrific films from the 1940s-50s. Their later ones...well, the less said the better.

Plot less, witless...

Warning: Spoilers
Following on from the "black" skeletons of their debut, and the ethnic angst of Jungle Jam, the fifth film in the Tom and Jerry series sees yet more imperialistic jibes as the duo encounter as many racial stereotypes as it's possible to depict about Switzerland.

Not endearing enough to be charming, nor arch enough to be edgy, this sub-Disney effort fails in attempts to amuse with some plot less surrealism, even the rather patronising "eating Swiss cheese makes you get holes in your body" pay off rather insipid.

One of the worst of the series, its own self-amusement and over reliance on musical filler grating.

Why dose the cheese has legs?

While light on plot and sense I just love the wacky aesthetics and tone of this little cartoon. Tom and Jerry might not be the cat and mouse now expected with that title, but I liked these two fellows.

Tom and Jerry are in Switzerland where wacky hijinks ensue.

I really liked the animation and it´s style. While the backgrounds are very cheap the movement of characters and items are really well done. I liked the design of everything except the really triangular mountains in the beginning.

This is a classic rubber hose cartoon where no rules apply. There are so many fun gags that only can happen in a cartoon like this, and I found it unpredictable in a good way. The humor kept me engaged all throughout. It´s more of a variety show than a story with plot but the short only asked for 7 minutes of your time.

The short has a very surreal tone to it. Everything is alive and can move, people act strange, strange events happens. It keeps you on your toes and uses the surreal tone to really cement it´s jokes and gags.

I liked the music. It felt fitting and sounded delightful.

I did not like the voice acting though. It was a bit too crude and scary. Whenever a character opens its mouth, nightmarish sounds come out.

In general, a fun carton that I enjoyed a lot. It´s fun, entertaining and the surreal tone and rubber hose antics really lifted the short.
