A Masterpiece from the early 80's...
namashi_14 November 2009
Basu Chatterjee's 'Shaukeen' is one of my all-time favorite films. This delightful comedy is a classic that never gets boring, it's evergreen work.

A K Hangal, Utpal Dutt & Ashok Kumar deliver outstanding performances. Hangal with his English accent is funny, Dutt is excellent, as ever. Kumar is superb, right from the very beginning. Rati as the babe, is terrific. Mithunda is lovable as the 3-oldies's driver. This film has Indian Cinema finest bunch of actors of it's time.

'Shaukeen' is not to be missed, a must see for everyone. Two Big Thumbs Up!

Ahead of it's times
silvan-desouza4 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I was surprised to know the film is a sex-based comedy, like Masti or recent films, this film deals with lecherous man played by 3 geniuses, Utpal Dutt, Ashok Kumar and Our ever loving AK Hangal all three in heavenly board now. The film is a satire mostly and rarely serious, the escapades are very funny though the story does get a bit dragged in second half, What could be conveyed in a shorter time, is conveyed in 2 hours 9 minutes(14 reels) but as per demand of Bollywood films, yet it's a shorter film. The film has several funny scenes, Mithun acting like the driver, the escapades in Goa(my hometown) are very funny. The whole film is a joy ride and can be enjoyed. Direction by Basu Chaterjee is fab He too like his mentor Hrishikesh Mukherjee used to make simple comedies but though this is quite bold for it's times. Music by RD Burman is fab, though the songs didn't become too popular but yet they blend well, the pick of the lot is the song Jab Bhi Koi Kangna Bole sung by Kishore Kumar, it is shown throughout the film. Dialogues are funny with few double entendrees.

Amongst actors, It's difficult to imagine anyone else in the 3 roles, Ashok Kumar is simply flawless, he makes every scene look lively and make his character relatable. Utpal Dutt is hilarious even when he has a serious face, he is truly amazing. AK Hangal is superb too in his roles Their chemistry is simply stunning. Young Mithun Chakraborthy does a superb job as the driver, while Rati Agnihotri is superb in her role.rest are adequate

The film is being remade now with Paresh Rawal,Annu Kapoor,Anupam Kher in the roles of 3 men while Akshay in the lead, Wonder how will it be?

An Eternal Masterpiece - SHAUKEEN
sambodhkaul25 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Though the movie was way ahead of its times, it did manage to pack housefulls. People flocked at movie theatres in droves to treat themselves to the 3 LEGENDS of the Hindi Film Industry - Ashok Kumar, AK Hangal and the king of Comedy Utpal Dutt.

The plot revolves around these THREE "Decadent Geriatrics " who go on a roller coaster ride to woo the vivacious Rati Agnihotri but eventually end up perceiving the ineluctable veracity of life - WATCH IT TO KNOW IT.

I had a whale of a time throughout the course of the movie and never lost focus even for a moment. Enjoy the flick for its unparalleled humour and its Canopus background score which has Ashok Kumar lending his voice to a mellifluous track.

Three old friends are on a road trip to have fun and woo some girls.

With its slow pace, subtle comedies and awesome music/background music, this is one of the best movies to put on a cold Sunday afternoon with a drink and a blanket.

Chemistry between 3 main characters is extremely good. And you instantly project yourself with your best buddies to your old age.

Not to mention the deep voiced narration.
