In the present, Rene meets Bill's ex-wife, M.E. finds a publisher who wants to read her manuscript: the problem is she hasn't written any of it yet. In the past, M.E.'s family is staying with her aunt on a ranch, and M.E. worries her aunt will shoot one of her horses because it threw her off during the last visit.

In the present: M.E. mistakes a black woman for a waitress at a restaurant, throwing a wrench into her friendship with Rene who thinks she's racist. Odessa's leaving so Rene has to hire a new assistant. M.E. decides to write an article on racism, and speaks to her uncle Jimmy who runs a racist website. In the past: Jimmy catches Rene and M.E. hanging out and confronts M.E.'s parents about it. Rene wants to move back to Detroit and tells M.E they can't be friends anymore.

In the present, M.E. confronts her uncle Jimmy after a cross burns on their lawn. Davis informs M.E. that Jimmy's website has a hit list with Rene's name on it. Rene takes Jimmy to court and calls M.E. to the witness stand. In the past: M.E. and Colliar bring Rene a hamster to cheer her up, but it gets loose in the house. Jimmy and his partner pull Sarah over and threaten her and Rene's lives.
