Cutting to the Chase

I'm very fond of Andy Clyde's Columbia shorts. Somehow, he managed to combine his slow reactions -- not stupid, but just taking a little time to react fully to the situation -- with the Columbia Shorts high-speed gag rate with plenty of coconuts in the sound effects, and produce something that was funny -- Mr. Clyde's world almost made sense and his rustic "heh-heh" always let you know he saw the joke.

Here, competing against Jame Morton for the title of County Doctor -- the prize a substantial $2500 a year income -- he and Morton must prove their utility: whoever sees more patients in a week gets the job and they both want it.

There are a couple of set-pieces in this short, one in which everyone in the town gets into a fight and the other the inevitable chase at the end, which Clyde and director Del Lord handle very nicely This is another god Clyde piece and well worth your time.

We know who's going to need a doctor by the time this contest is over.

Warning: Spoilers
Who's going to be chosen county doctor in this wild Columbia short? Old fashioned style practitioner Andy Clyde is up against a yowlang mad man of a doctor (James C. Morton) whom no one in their right mind would want looking at their prized cow let alone another human. The rivalry between the two gets out of hand, and ultimately they are neck and neck in the contest up until a farce filled finale

Frankly I wouldn't want either of these men on my medical case, let alone the people who created the contest as neighbors. The maddening laughter of Morton becomes a bit too much to listen to, indicating a maniacal personality that would make more sense in being locked up although in the final twist, he ends up in a different type of lockup. Far too bizarre and quite dated in its humor, although a sequence with a flock of geese sounding like cars wanting to pass the slow moving horse and buggy of Clyde's was very funny.
