Sex & Nudity

  • The sounds of a couple having sex are heard through the thin walls of a hotel.
  • A girl is wearing a bra and panties when she goes in water and you see her bare buttocks.
  • Buttocks are seen mostly when they go into the water but never frontal. They show buttocks about 3x but no more than.
  • There is some references and jokes in this movie throughout nothing too bad.
  • Two characters passionately make out on the beach. The woman removes her top and one breast is fully visible for a few seconds.
  • Man and woman have sex behind a thin curtain. Can clearly see them but they are positioned to hide nudity. Top of the woman's breast is briefly visible but no nipple is shown. Sounds and depiction are very graphic. Scene lasts about thirty seconds.
  • Françoise is shown in a bikini, but is wearing a cover-up over it most of the time. Guys are shown shirtless at times in swim trunks.
  • After Richard tells Françoise about parallel universes, there is an awkward moment when she tells him that this is the kind of pretentious stuff American guys tell French girls so they can sleep with them. Richard, embarassed, says that he thought he was doing really well.
  • Bugs grabs Richard's genitals (both are clothed) as he suspects him to be infringing on his relationship with Sal. Richard reacts in extreme pain.

Violence & Gore

  • We see a bloody aftermath of a suicide. The victim has slashed his wrists with a knife, and there is blood all over the body, the knife, and the walls of the room. Several flashbacks to this scene are shown throughout the film.
  • We see the aftermath of a shark attack; we see the extremely gory wounds of the victims who have had large chunks torn from their sides, and there is blood splattered all over the beach, and blood in the water.
  • A few people are shot several times and killed; blood splatters onto the face of a nearby witness, and we see bloody bullet wounds.
  • In a video game style fantasy sequence, a man imagines himself shooting and killing several people; no blood.
  • A man has a tooth forcibly removed; we briefly see the bloody tooth.
  • A man kills an attacking shark by slicing open its belly, and we see lots of blood in the water.
  • Lots of threatening with guns, and shots fired with nobody hurt.
  • A woman gets shot.

Profanity

  • "Putain de merde" (Holy sh*t) is said in French by Étienne.
  • About 50 F-words, several anatomical references, many scatological references, and several mild obscenities.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Towards the end of the film, there is a wild, erratic party that is possibly influenced by drugs or alcohol.
  • Joints smoked by various characters throughout the film. Mild and brief ref to a guy eating a magic mushroom. A huge cannabis plantation is shown in one scene. In the first 30 minutes of the movie, lots of references about drugs.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A young man drinks snake blood in an effort to prove himself to another man. Multiple snakes are visible behind a glass barrier as he prepares to drink the blood. Some may find this scene repulsive.
  • Françoise suddenly jumps off a cliff into the water far below. Her friends call out to her thinking she may be dead, but she survives.
  • In the deleted scenes, Sal and Richard swim through an underwater cavern leading to another part of the island. He follows her through the cave without emerging for quite awhile. When he finally resurfaces, he is gasping for breath and claiming to have almost drowned, while Sal acts as though she doesn't care.
  • While swimming to the island, Étienne claims that he that he saw a shark fin in the water near Richard. Though only a prank, the scene is rather intense, as Richard is scared out of his wits and especially in light of real shark attacks later in the film.
  • In the first 30 minutes, some viewers might find the fleabag scenes in Bangkok disturbing. Also the shark scene is quite intense.
