Mubi is continuing its partnership with Dok Leipzig to showcase highlights from their tribute Visual Electrics. The Cinema of Jay Rosenblatt in this year’s 60th festival edition. Mubi's retrospective is showing November 3, 2017 - March 4, 2018 in most countries around the world. It is a common and justified rhetorical device to begin an article on the retrospective of a filmmaker with an impression, a little observation or the description of a scene. However, being confronted with the work of San Francisco-based found footage worker Jay Rosenblatt the idea of a single, autonomous moment vanishes behind multicolored layers of streaming emotions. Just a few days after the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film I find it enormously hard to remember a single scene. As the filmmaker said himself during one of the Q&A sessions in Leipzig, “They [the films] all kind of blend together.” Well, they do and in this one might find the personal,...

Has the confirmation of human bone fragments found in Aruba pushed the 12-year-old Natalee Holloway mystery closer to resolution?
A forensic scientist on Thursday confirmed the statement last week by Natalee’s father, Dave Holloway, that bone fragments Holloway discovered on the island where the Alabama teen vanished on a 2005 high school graduation trip “are human, and they are of Caucasian, European descent,” according to Oxygen, which is following Dave’s search for answers in its current true-crime series The Disappearance of Natalee Holloway.

“Gore” is a term that seems to split horror fans in half. On one side are the gorehounds who love viscera and splatter above all else; and on the other, the purists, who want all of that splashing off-screen. I find myself split between these two, especially in recent years. When I was younger, I did love gore, but found little enjoyment in it beyond curiosity and testing my own stamina. Lately I have come to enjoy quieter, less messy offerings. Yet there are different ways to use gore. You find some films that use it to fill an otherwise thin plot; and others that find meaning, albeit a disturbing and brutal meaning, in violence.

Bobo was 20 when she disappeared. Her brother told police that he saw a man dressed in camouflage leading her away into the woods. We recently told you about a company that turns dead bodies into diamonds, a unique service for those looking for a bit of an unconventional way to memorialize their deceased loved ones. What else can you do with ashes, besides display them in an urn? Well, Missouri-based artist Adam Brown uses them as the secret ingredient in his paintings, which give new life to the dead.
As reported by Oddity Central, the 32-year-old artist mixes ashes with paints, craft glues and resins, which literally allows him to paint pictures of the dead, using their cremated remains. "It hit me that having ashes in an urn on a fireplace would be a good way to remember that someone died," says Brown, "but having them in a piece of art is a good way of remembering that someone lived."

For those of us who love to be uncomfortable, Britain has spawned some of the most warped, unsettling and notorious programs ever to make us laugh. But sadly, our darkest comics are often our most overlooked and underrated. They’ve been lauded by some, yet alienated many others; caused widespread controversy, whilst somehow paving the way for lighter entertainers. Would Little Britain have ever existed without The League of Gentlemen, for example?
The fact is, we laugh at horrible things. We know we shouldn’t, but we do anyway. Laughing is the best coping mechanism we have. That’s why giggling in sombre situations, whilst highly frowned upon, is actually not considered that abnormal. And that’s also why these shows are funny. Often because we’re seeing something we recognise, but simply never really talk about because it isn’t ‘done.’ Sometimes we’re seeing a reflection of something we’ve experienced ourselves,...

Practically every child dreams about going to Disney World at some point in their life. Disney World should be a warm and magical place to spend time with kids...right?
Well, that's ruined now thanks to "Escape From Tomorrow," the dark thriller director Randy Moore illegally filmed in Disney World in complete secrecy. The movie is a decidedly dark take on the Happiest Place on Earth, centering on the epic battle of a father who loses his job — and sanity — while vacationing with his family in Disney World. His hallucinations and disturbing visions that take place while he's inside may give park-goers pause.
Though we can assure you that Moore's film is a work of fiction, there are some real-life murmurs of weirdness in the Magic Kingdom. Human remains in the park? Hmm, maybe Disney World isn't as happy as it's made out to be.

Nb: Films by Robert Beavers, Peter Hutton, and Luther Price were unavailable for preview. However, I said some very nice things about these men and their work in general over at The Dissolve.
In years past, I have attempted to present this extended article as a preview; my aim has been to send it off into the world either the day before of the day of Tiff's kick-off. That has proven impossible this year, and, dear reader, I am heartily sorry for having offended thee... But the fact that Wavelengths is a beat that is becoming harder and harder for one person to adequately cover is undoubtedly a sign of good health. Since last year, when Tiff enfolded the former Visions section (a space for formally adventurous narrative features) into Wavelengths (Tiff's experimental showcase), not only has interest in the section grown exponentially. A recent story in USA Today shared the news that Clive Barker is working on an original comic book series for Boom! Studios entitled New Genesis. The premise is vintage Barker, who has never been one to shy away from twisting spiritual themes in ways that are bound to make some people uncomfortable. Barker, along with co-writer Mark L. Miller (fresh off a run on Boom!’s Hellraiser series) will be telling a version of the Bible’s Old Testament set in the present day.
Reading about that series (which I will have more to say about in the coming weeks) set me to thinking about Barker’s rich and varied history in comics. His work has always been uniquely suited for adaptation to comics, giving writers and artists a wealth of visually rich material to draw from.
Barker’s comics presence seems to come in fits and starts, with Boom!

Julia Pastrana has finally been laid to rest in her hometown of Sinaloa de Leyva, in Mexico, nearly 153 years after her death, according to the Associated Press. Pastrana was born with a rare genetic condition that left her face and body covered with hair. That, coupled with a jutting jaw and other deformities, led a showman named Theodore Lent to tour her around the United States, beginning in 1854, where she was billed as the "Ape Woman."
Just 20-years-old at the time, Pastrana would sing and dance for paying audiences across the U.S., before also touring Euope and Russia. She married Lent, and gave birth to his son. However, she became ill due to complications from childbirth and died, along with the son, in 1860.
Her remains ended up at a university in Norway, following her death. Now, over 150 years later, after private and government requests, her body was returned home to be laid to rest.

Mexico City -- The plane carrying Mexican-American music superstar Jenni Rivera plunged almost vertically from more than 28,000 feet and hit the ground in a nose-dive at a speed that may have exceeded 600 miles per hour, Mexico's top transportation official said Tuesday.
In the first detailed account of the moments leading up to the crash that killed Rivera and six other people, Secretary of Communications and Transportation Gerardo Ruiz Esparza told Radio Formula that the twin-engine turbojet hit the ground 1.2 miles from where it began falling.
"The plane practically nose-dived," he said. "The impact must have been terrible."
Ruiz did not offer any explanation of what may have caused the plane to plummet, saying only that "The plane fell from an altitude of 28,000 feet ... It may have hit a speed higher than 1,000 kph (621 mph)."
Ruiz said the pilot of the plane, Miguel Perez Soto, had a valid Mexican pilot's license that would have expired in January.

Human remains have been found near the country villa of missing Bollywood actress Laila Khan. The findings - including three skulls - were recovered in a town called Igatpuri, around 130 km from Mumbai, The Times of India reports. Police have suggested that Khan and her siblings may have been murdered by her stepfather Pervez Tak because they witnessed the killing of their mother Celina. The actress and her family had been missing since February 2011. Her father Nadir Patel registered her suspected abduction by Tak and his accomplice Asif Sheikh at Mumbai's Oshiwara police station. During interrogation, Tak revealed that Khan had been killed along with four other members of (more)...

Apologies in advance: Partaking of this week’s True Blood recap may make you feel like you’re reading an obituaries column. But seriously, they’re dropping like flies on that show! This week a Trane gets derailed, an uneasy alliance is formed, waters are smoothed and an angel gets her training wings. It's a week of relationship shakeups and confusing business models in the latest episode of United States of Tara!
Our little Moosh has a pretty eventful episode following his threesome with Lionel and Noah last week. The three of them, along with the fourth member of their film class group, Rory, are up in Marshall's room. And, no, this isn't a continuation of last week's sexcapades.
The group is debating whether to enter their film in a high school film festival in New York City. Why there is any resistance to this idea is beyond me since entering apparently means an automatic trip to NYC, but everyone except Lionel thinks it's a bad idea.
Marshall because he thinks the film is too terrible to be seen by guest judge...

Imagine that your hand was the only thing that told the story of you.
Human remains are found by a homeless man. The victim had been dismembered. The investigation recovers only a hand and a foot.
With Detective Bud away from the scene, we got to see more of Detective Sam Baker in action.
Initial examination revealed a first name, occupation and that he was a recent casino winner.
The next day, back at the office, Megan preps everyone for Lacey's visit for a social studies assignment. Dr. Hunt drafted a schedule and scripts for everyone to be interviewed and instructed them to hide the gory stuff. Hard to do in a morgue right?
"Make me look good." To which Curtis quiped, "So you want us to lie." Earning him a slap on the back of his head.
When more of the victim is found in an alley, Ethan reluctantly...

Canada's Genie Awards were held this week and Incendies, which you'll remember was up for the Foreign Film Oscar, was the big winner. The "runner up" as it were, the movie that did very well for itself that didn't win the big one, was Barney's Version which was just Rosamund Pike short of sweeping all the acting trophies. Curiously, if you trust photos from the big event the Barney's Version team was curiously absent. That's so uncool when you win that many awards!
Melissa Etheridge performed (anyone know what song?) and here's a photo of presenters Mia Kirshner (more on her in a bit) and Rossif Sutherland. Yes, he's another spawn of Donald Sutherland -- I didn't know there was a post Kiefer! -- he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for a film called High Life. Perhaps he can co-star with Armie Hammer at some point since he appears...

Human remains found at actor's home as police continue search for second body
Veteran Swedish actor Per Oscarsson, 83, who appeared in the film version of Stieg Larsson's Millenium trilogy, is feared to have died in a fire at his home early on Friday. Human remains found in the house in a remote area near the small town of Skara, south-west of Stockholm, were either those of the actor or of his wife, Kia Ostling, 67, said a police spokesman, Jan Strommegard.
Both had been reported missing by relatives, who said they were at home when the building burned down. Only the chimney was left when firefighters arrived. The cause of the fire is unknown.
Strommegard could not say when the identification of the remains would be completed but said they were still searching for the remains of a second person.

“I am not an ideologue,” José Luis Guerín says matter-of-factly. “I need characters.” Judging by the lukewarm response that has greeted his latest film, Guest, it’s a dicey stance for a director of art house cinema to take these days. Early reviewers have praised Guerín’s images but questioned the structure of the film, which often finds him wandering through Third World cities and inviting conversations about hot-button topics like immigration, colonialism, and religion. That he does so without any pretense of deep sociopolitical analysis makes Guest something of an anachronism: it’s a politically-interested film in an observational mode, more humble and curious than didactic.
In 2006, after premiering his previous film, In the City of Sylvia, Guerín decided to spend a year traveling the world by accepting every festival invitation he was offered. He carried a consumer-grade Dv camera with him wherever he went and very gradually built...

Bones fans are used to being teased, but executive producer Stephen Nathan wants to give you plenty of time to think about this one: “There will be a proposal coming, probably during February Sweeps,” he tells us. “It is my mission to torture the fans with this one. There will be a proposal. It will be a real proposal. And it will move things forward in a way that I think the fans will like.” Which couple is it? Nathan wouldn’t rule anyone out for us, except for Hodgins and Angela, obviously, since they’re already wed. Could it be Sweets and Daisy,...

For those moments when your life just doesn’t contain enough military hardware and giant explosions there’s The Bayifier.
This neat little website allows you, nay compels you, to upload your photos and embellish them in true Michael Bay fashion, with fighter jets and Shia Labeouf.
Walking on the London’s South Bank today I snapped this fairly ordinary picture,
Then I fed it through The Bayifier. Lo,
I think you’ll agree it’s a vast improvement, particularly Big Labeouf yelling out the time.
What’s nice about this handy little tool is the ability to subtly alter past movies to give them a little something more Baylike. Here’s When Shia Met Sally.
And now Merchant-Bay’s Human Remains of the Day,
Right – your turn.
Click Here to experience the Bayifier - and live your life against a shimmering, setting sun.
