Routine police training film
Leofwine_draca19 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
CITY HERO is a strange one for sure, a Hong Kong drama following a number of young recruits as they undergo a gruelling training process in order to become elite police force members. The majority of the running time features them at the hands of the tough and merciless Dean Shek who literally shows them the ropes, with lots of comedy moments and the kind of camaraderie that always fills such movies. The climax sees them applying their training to a real-world situation, with unexpected consequences. It's rather the low budget affair and unremarkable in terms of the drama, although the cast is pretty good: Michael Wong and Billy Lau feature with stars like Billy Chow and Ku Feng in support.

A mixed-bag HK action movie.

Warning: Spoilers
This is quite an intense action movie featuring five young policemen, determined to join a special squad under the command of a no nonsense and disciplined instructor.

There's spot-on acting and a fast-paced plot. The movie is full of the intense training action of the policemen, with a good dose of drama and humor mixed in.

I enjoyed seeing the chemistry, teamwork and sportsmanship between the fellow policemen and their relationship with their instructor. The climax is really riveting and ***spoiler ahead*** heartfelt and sad, which takes away the spiritedness of the movie in my opinion ***spoiler ends***.

Not a bad action movie from Hong Kong. Mixed feelings about it, though, due to the high and low moods of the film.

Grade B-
