one of the Funniest Obscured Family Films in Years
sandlot19929 May 2018
If your a fan of Jim Varney for portraying his role as Ernest P. Worrell, then you'll probably will remember this film back when I first seen on the Disney Channel back in the late 90s to early 2000s. for me this is probably one of the funniest family films ever since it's obscured and probably forgotten, the story is kinda okay in my opinion, the characters are probably fair along with the story and the fart jokes are not that great compared to the ones in Blazing Saddles; Caddyshack and the Nutty Professor remake with Eddie Murphy since they're quite hilarious in our opinion. Overall this is a family film that many of us remember catching back on the Disney channel and despite it being a direct to video movie since for those who are fans of Jim Varney themselves!

Would have liked it better without the crude humor

Warning: Spoilers
This film has a hilarious story, great acting (Jim Varney from the 'Earnest' films makes a major character appearance, Louan Gideon, who was Danielle Atron on The Secret World of Alex Mack plays the role of Mrs. Stevens, etc.), and it does have some genuinely funny jokes. The story was really different, the tale of a lazy kid, Timmy, who holds escaped convict Carl hostage to bring to his teacher for a Current Events class - if he fails his project, Mrs. Stevens will place him in summer school, much to the joy of his school principal, Ott "the Snot", a sadistic guy who doesn't seem to like kids at all. However, Timmy doesn't expect to befriend Carl.

Overall not a bad kids' film, but all the fart jokes got on my nerves. Those jokes were lame, disgusting and definitely not creative by any stretch of the imagination. Some of the characters were really annoying too, like Buddy (what's the purpose of him other than just to be generally gross?) If all the flatulence jokes were removed, or at least cut down, I would have liked it a lot more.

Awesome Kids Movie

I am the father of a six year old boy and he loves this film. I even like watching it when my son is not with me. I recommend that every parent buy this movie. It will likely be more attractive to boys but I challenge you as a parent to rent it and watch it. It could easily be qualified to be a Disney film (Obviously Disney had nothing to do with it, just that it is a great wholesome movie).

Out On a Limb

Jim Varney stars in this embarrassing kids' story that will appeal only to the ten-year-old boy in your life. Varney is Carl Banks, a counterfeiter who escapes from prison. Chased by crooked cops, he ends up in a giant treehouse in a suburban backyard. The treehouse, which rivals my first apartment in size, belongs to Timmy (Joey Zimmerman), a young Ferris Bueller-type kid. Timmy is being pressured by his evil principal (Richard Kline) to get a current events project together or go to summer school. Timmy and his best friends, the gassy Buddy (Kristopher Kachurak) and the nerdy Stevie (Todd Bosley) decide to make Carl their project. Timmy's parents (Mark Moses and Debby Boone) don't believe Timmy's wild stories anyway, so why not?

What follows is the same type of story you have seen on everything from "Home Alone" to any live-action Nickelodeon or The Disney Channel series. Carl turns out not to be such a bad guy, the school principal is actually a bigger villain than first thought, and all of the adults are complete morons who are routinely outsmarted by these routine kids. The treehouse apparently has running electricity, since there is a refrigerator, computer, and elaborate booby traps that only adult screenwriters could come up with. Writing this off as harmless drivel would be a mistake. I have not seen this many instances of passing gas, picking noses, and spitting phlegm since...well, elementary school. This movie would amuse ten year boys, and no one else. Younger children might emulate the behavior, and older kids will be bored out of their skulls. The script goes for the easy gross laugh, the direction is average, and the music is a cacophony of loud and unsubtle. Poor Jim Varney. Once he was trapped in his Ernest character, he was never able to escape typecasting before dying an early death from lung cancer. Here, he looks sad and unhealthy, and I felt bad for him all the way through- from his one good scene talking about being a fireman, to having to wear drag to fool a gardener at Timmy's house. "Treehouse Hostage" suffers from root rot.

Great Message

I am such a fan of Jim Varney's and watch everything he's been in. 'Treehouse Hostage' is a great family film. It is like the modern day version of 'The Boy who cried Wolf'. When you play pranks and make up wild stories all the time, don't expect people to believe you when you tell the truth. Case in point, Timmy has an overactive imagination which gets him into trouble with his parents, teachers, cops and the principal. So when escaped counterfeiter, Carl Banks, played by Varney, ends up in the boys'(Timmy, Stevie and Buddy's) security system of their tree house, no one believes him even when tells his dad and the police. Along the way, they befriend Carl, who turns out to actually be a really nice guy. This DVD gets regular use in my home. It's a clean movie that's kid friendly for all ages. Watch with your kids. It's funny and sometimes serious and definitely heartfelt, thanks to Varney's dramatic scene in the tree house when he was telling the boys how he got mixed up with counterfeiters. Varney's talents are sorely missed.

Excellent

I like this movie and I thought that this was the best Jim Varney movie yet I've seen. I liked this movie SO much that I asked for it for Christmas and watched it over and over and over again and yet I still like it. My favorite part is the tree house Court scene and when Carl escapes. I thought that both of those scenes were absolutely hilarious. Don't ask me how I got to be A Treehouse hostage fan. It's Jim Varney. I don't know how I got a Jim Varney fan I'm glad to be a fan of Jim Varney and all of his movies. I will still like this movie for a very long time and nothing will take that away from me. And I really mean that.

I hate this movie, it just bothers me. My little brother loves it and makes me watch it all the time and I am soo sick of it. It's probably a good movie for a little kid but is boring to mature people. I love Jim Varny, but he wastes his talent in this.
