It was nearly two years ago we got the disappointing news that production on Olivier Assayas’ Idol’s Eye, a crime drama starring Robert De Niro, Robert Pattinson, and Rachel Weisz, had been called off just moments before shooting was to begin in Toronto. In the meantime, Assayas went off to direct Kristen Stewart once again in the ghost drama Personal Shopper (our Cannes review), but it looks like he is returning to the material.
“I hope it will be my next film. If things advance I’d like to shoot it in Toronto before the end of the winter,” he tells Screen Daily, noting that producer Charles Gillibert now has the rights to the crime drama. While he didn’t give additional details, those expecting the same cast might be disappointed. Back when production was called off, the producers stated their plans to “generate a revised script and assemble a new filmmaking team.

Personal Shopper director discusses collaborating with Roman Polanski and a new bid to re-float passion project Idol’s Eye.
French director Olivier Assayas will touch down at Zurich Film Festival (Sept 22 - Oct 2) this year to receive the event’s tribute award and present his metaphysical thriller Personal Shopper, which is screening as part of a retrospective of his works.
Starring Hollywood actress Kristen Stewart as a psychic young woman trying to connect with her dead twin brother in Paris, it was one of the most anticipated titles at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year where it played in competition.
It is the second time Assayas has worked with Stewart - after Clouds Of Sils Maria - and rumours abound about a potential third collaboration.
“For now there’s nothing in the pipeline,” Assayas told Screen. “Today, I don’t have a project to propose to her although I would love to have one. I don’t rule...

She's not a feminist, but says women are born creative. Juliette Binoche talks to Laura Barnett about her spat with Gérard Depardieu, bad reviews – and why acting is like peeling onions
One Sunday a couple of months ago, Juliette Binoche bumped into Gérard Depardieu while shopping in a Paris market. It was the first time the two titans of French cinema had met since Depardieu's bizarre public rant last year, in which he described her as "nothing" and "nobody".
"I just went up to him and grabbed him," she says, "and said, 'Hey, what happened, Gérard? Why are you so aggressive with me? What did I do to you?'"
Binoche turns up her palms and shrugs her shoulders, in that uniquely Gallic expression of frustration. "He said, 'Oh, I'm stupid. Sometimes I just do that, blah, blah.' Later, his agent called my agent to say, 'Gérard is very happy you are reconciled.

The eleventh and last part (W-z) of my extensive 2010 preview guide I'm still at work on and should be hitting the site either Tuesday or Wednesday. Before that though it is time to plug a few holes.
With release dates always in flux, there is no true definitive list of films opening this year as the number of titles change day-by-day and many aren't really locked in yet. As a result, there's definitely been some guesswork assembling this list, albeit carefully considered and researched to try and fit in what will come out, what's important enough, and what can be reasonably done.
However, there are always titles that slip through the cracks. Thankfully some ever vigilant readers have been keeping an eye out and sent in some suggestions of key projects I've missed. Not everything can be included of course, otherwise this list would take forever, but there are fourteen...

Wellspring books rights to 'Strayed'
NEW YORK -- Indie banner Wellspring has acquired all U.S. rights to French writer-helmer Andre Techine's latest effort, Strayed, starring Emmanuelle Beart. Based on Gilles Perrault's best-selling novel, the film premiered this year in Cannes. Wellspring is eyeing an August release for the film, a period piece that follows a young widowed schoolteacher who flees the German occupation of Paris with her children. During their escape, the family meets a charismatic teenager who helps them survive in the wilderness. Techine's credits include the Catherine Deneuve starrer My Favorite Season and Alice and Martin, starring Juliette Binoche. Strayed is a French-British co-production, which was sold though the Wild Bunch sales banner. Wellspring acquisitions head Marie Therese Guirgis brokered the pact with Wild Bunch's Carole Baraton. Past and upcoming theatrical releases for Wellspring include Alexander Sokurov's Father and Son, Jafar Panahi's Crimson Gold and Girlhood, by documentary filmmaker Liz Garbus.
