This is an Australian movie, and one can tell because it seems to focus more on the drama than the action. It is supposed to be an action movie, but most of the movie is set in a house somewhere in the country and the deliberation of an escaped criminal, Sandy, deciding whether he should run, hand himself in, or seek revenge for his brother's murder. With him is an ex-girlfriend, Kate, and they also attempt to relate to each other as she hovers on the decision to leave him or to stay with him.
The movie opens with the funeral of Sandy's brother Chris. He had been murdered and he is the only one there, with a couple of police officers watching him. On the way back to the prison, one of the police officers is continually deriding him to a point where Sandy attacks them and escapes. This is not a police movie though because Sandy is the main character. The police do play apart, but they are the bad guys who we don't want getting Sandy.
The first half of the movie has events slowly revealing what happened to Sandy's brother. It is not really something left for us to work out, and the answers are basically handed to us through a video and a snitch named Frank. Suspense is not really the main focus, but rather the characters and how they react to the situation. One who wants revenge, but cannot go far because he is in chains. And a woman who wants out but just does not seem to want to let him go.
The handcuffs play a very important role. They symbolise who he is: an escaped prisoner. No matter how hard he tries to escape, these chains just won't come off. They are a legacy that haunts him through the movie, and they are not snapped until they are cut by the sword of an enemy. In the end these chains do not kill him, but save his life.
This is the contrast between Sandy and Chris. Chris never went to gaol, and as such was not protected from the world. In the end, the world caught up with him and his schemes and killed him. Sandy was in gaol and the experience tamed him. He did not want to go back, but he could not get away, until his brother's killer freed him.
Kate did not want to play a part, but was inevitably drawn into it. It began as favours, but the favours slowly turned to passion and desire to look after Sandy. She was torn between running away and remaining to protect him, and it was this decision to protect him that tied her to him, for to save Sandy and herself, she needed to kill. When she looked at the blood on her hands, she knew that she could not turn back.
The title describes the entire nature of the movie: it is about making decisions that cannot be unmade. Sandy decides to flee, and by making that decision he is stuck in that path and cannot go back. He is a fugitive and nobody will look the same at him. Kate knew that she had to kill or to die, but to kill meant that she could not go back to the innocent person she was before. As Lady MacBeth cries, 'out out damn spot." The blood is on her hands and it is never going to come off again. This is all brought about at the end when they leave Australia. The gun is thrown in the bin and Sandy says, "this is the point of no return." They have set their course and cannot go back.
