Russell Hayden as Lucky Saunders
nova-633 September 2010
Rustlers are causing mayhem in a small western town. Lucky Saunders comes upon the scene of the rustlers latest work. This time a local cattleman has been murdered. Lucky returns to town to break the news to town officials and he is accused by Steve Kirby (Tristram Coffin) of being responsible for the murder. Kirby is an ambitious man who is new to the town. Kirby has designs on running for sheriff and he is also romancing Gayle Foster, whose father, Dan Foster, owns the area's largest ranch.

Now Kirby and Lucky are on a collision course that will leave only one man alive by film's end. Kirby murders Dan Foster and frames Lucky for the crime. The locals quickly turn on Lucky, but his pal Doc Jones (Dub Taylor) helps him escape jail and Lucky plots to expose Kirby as the crook he really is.

Hopalong Cassidy fans will be glad to see Russell Hayden in a starring role. The film lacks the polish and script of an average Hoppy film but the film is not without some interesting aspects. Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys perform 4 songs and this helps to get the story moving. Also the stunt work is quite good for a B' Western. Dub Taylor has a very large role in the film. His appearance can be hit or miss as often his sidekick characters can be a little annoying. But here I found his character sometimes amusing and not a detriment.

The film is nothing special but fans of B' Westerns and the Hopalong Cassidy films will find it an enjoyable 57 minutes.
