An ad for the new product "You Won't Believe It's Not Vincent D'Onofrio".
MBunge26 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This tale of urban misery is written at a 6th grade level, piles up the melodrama like a farmer shoveling pig crap and turns out to be nothing more than the longest "Just Say No!" public service announcement in history.

The main character in this story is Ryan (Michael Rodrick), but I came up with another name for him while watching this film. I call him Not Vincent D'Onofrio, or NVD. That's not just because the actor playing him looks like a defective clone of D'Onofrio, but also because Michael Rodrick gives a performance like D'Onofrio on some sort of cold medicine and vodka bender.

After being away for 4 years, Not Vincent D'Onofrio returns home to his working class New York City neighborhood after his brother Jimmy (Kelly Cole) dies of an overdose. He comes back to find his other brother Eddie (Brian Vincent) is a piece of junkie trash and his old girlfriend Carla (Jordan Bayne) is now married to local mobster Vincent (Jonathan LaPaglia). The plot gets a little murky after this because NVD doesn't really have much of an agenda or purpose. He kind of just hangs around while stuff happens.

It turns out that Vincent pressured Carla into framing NVD for a crime that sent him to prison for two years, but NVD still loves her and wants her back. You'd think that'd be enough of a plot right there, but hold on. It also seems as though Vincent is connected to Jimmy's death. Again, that seems like plenty of conflict for any movie but writer/director Michael Sergio disagreed. In addition, Vincent employs Eddie as a low-level drug dealer. How much more motivation does any character need? Well, Sergio apparently thought a whole lot more because he also has Vincent frame Eddie for murdering a gang of Latino drug dealers and then forces Not Vincent D'Onofrio to watch while Vincent has doggie-style sex with a heavily drugged Carla. Oh, and then NVD realizes that he's actually the father of Vincent and Carla's son. After all of that, we finally get a violent confrontation between Vincent and NVD and an ending that depends on a mobster being a wise and honorable guy.

That might seem like a haphazard description of the plot of Under Hellgate Bridge, but there's not much more to it than that. This story doesn't really unfold as much as it dribbles out and forms a pool on a linoleum floor. Not Vincent D'Onofrio is this ridiculously passive character who does little more than listen to other people give these fairly expository-ish monologues. The other characters are slightly better, yet there's not one subtle emotion or line of dialog among the lot of 'em. This script was either written by a halfwit or it was written by someone who thinks other people are halfwits and need every little thing spelled out for them. The direction is amateurish, especially in its repeated use of fade-to-black as a segue, but it's not that annoying.

Under Hellgate Bridge isn't any good at all. It's one of those movies where you hope the filmmaker got something out of making it, because no one can get anything out of watching it.

Looking back with redundant hindsight . . .
charlytully8 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
As I said in my review of THE BLUE MARBLE, a short (13 minutes) that was added to the UNDER HELLGATE BRIDGE DVD (and probably filmed in the first place) as a vanity nod to UHB producer Isil Bagdadi, on a minute-for-minute basis, BM is better than UHB--primarily because Michael Rodrick (the lead in both films) has NO lines in BM.

Obviously, many of the early UHB comment-makers were swept away by director Michael Sergio's charisma on the film fest circuit, where it won two audience popularity awards. DVD extras include shots of Sergio fawning over the hoi polloi. In an self-damning bit of candor, Sergio admits that a)the plot here is autobiographical, b)his first choice to play lead character Ryan bailed out, and c)(by inference) he picked his namesake (Michael Sergio=Michael Rodrick) to pinch-hit--an unfortunate choice, indeed. If you don't believe me, check out Rodrick's subsequent 10-year career on IMDb (nothing to brag about) OR look at the DVD's "My Favorite Scenes" chapter of the 22-minute cast interview "extra," and see again how lame Rodrick's line deliveries are compared to virtually every other major or even minor player.

No Shelter Here!

I came across this movie on DVD. It's the kind of movie that would never be your first choice to hire from the video store. If the movie you want is out then you'll pick up something like this.Well it's got some guys from The Sopranos in it (Uncle Junior & Pussy),so you think "I'll give this a watch" but you're really not really happy with your choice in your heart. Part of you suspects that it sucks.Well, does it?The answer- Yes and No. Firstly, it's well-shot on great locations and the acting is generally good(Frank Vincent could have played the part of Sal in his sleep).Pussy from The Sopranos plays a Pussy clone and Uncle Junior plays a priest. The plot is fairly predictable and has a really sordid rape scene which is shown in an unecessarily graphic manner. The characters are ultra-dull and you really do not care what happens to them by the end of the movie. Still, Michael Sergio's direction shows promise and while the movie is less than great it is not bad. Mind you, my expectations were not high on that wet Thursday afternoon in the video store.

a terrible waste of time
bees_knees9 November 2002
Ten minutes worth of story stretched out into the better part of two hours. When nothing of any significance had happened at the halfway point I should have left. But, ever hopeful, I stayed. And left with a feeling of guilt for having wasted the time. Acting was OK, but the story line is so transparent and weak. The script is about as lame as it could get, but again, stretching out the ten minute plot doesn't leave a whole lot of room for good dialogue.

Wow
spfoley6 February 2002
Why no one has realized Jordan Bayne's talent on a way larger scale is beyond me. The others are good, they have a little ninch in the entertainment 'world' but wow.. Jordan Bayne RULES!

The movie, for it's limited budget, was obviously a work of the heart. It's also obvious, with movies like this, that it shows just who has and who doesn't have talent. These kinds of movies are very telling as to whether a person has a true ability or if they're just a temporary 'flavor of the month'.

I have to admit to being disappointed that the Indy film avenue is letting the more mainstream actors/actresses in on these films. I do not watch movies to see Friends or Tom Cruise's ex wife. I watch Indy films to watch the REAL talent. Someone needs to hit the talent in this line of film actors and actresses with a spotlight because they totally rock.

corrupt and disgusting
everbrown512 June 2000
This is the type of film that gets shown on early AM cheap cable. It's an inarticulate thug movie disguised as some sort of heavenly message. With the exception of Melia and Brian Vincent, who play convincing junk addicts, the performances are paper-thin, as is Sergio's self-important script. The entire theater audibly moaned in disgust in one particularly revolting scene in which the villain humiliates his wife over a bar table in order to prove a violently brain-dead point to his unarmed enemy. Plot holes and verging on a dozen crying scenes make this movie banal and boring!

Hey, is that a story I hear?
slimandy26 July 2000
I have to admit that I'm a sucker for movies about New York street life, but that doesn't mean I sit through all of them. This one I did, with pleasure. Under Hellgate Bridge has plenty of the prerequisite grit and guns and that's fine, but it's also got A STORY. Actually a very compelling story. Surprise. Some substance behind the style. It's fun to find yourself actually wondering what's going to happen to these characters instead of wondering how they did that 20 minute dolly shot.

You forgot the actor Brian Vincent as Eddie! (Fifth Billing)
flexhor12 September 1999
The actor Brian Vincent is left out of the Biography, I don't know why: In a blistering performance, he plays a lead role along with the brilliant Jonathen Lapaglia and an emotionly raw and fantastic Michael Rodrick. I just saw the film at the Montreal Film Festival. It is an amazing ensemble piece reminesant of Scorse's "Mean Streets". It's dynamic, gains real power and leads powerfully to a thrilling conclusion. The cinematography is amazing and the directing top notch. This film moved me and the people I saw it with. I hope it can be seen by a large au

Under Hellgate Bridge is a film you don't want to miss!
england4215 July 2000
This is an excellent film, a must see. Michael Sergio's direction is the best and the cast is topnotch! Michael Rodrick does a fantastic portrayal as Ryan, former bad boy turned hero. Jonathan LaPaglia is the perfect villain and the gorgeous Jordan Bayne was wonderful as Ryan's love interest. The rest of the cast, Dominic Chianese, Vincent Pastore, Frank Vincent, Brian Vincent, Careena Melia, and Kristen Lee Kelly rounded out the film with their great performances.

A movie that speaks the truth
ElaineCK22 August 2003
I chose to watch this movie because Jonathan LaPaglia (who plays Vincent) is one of my favorite actors. In this movie he plays a bad guy which is not a role he usually plays, but does a good job anyway. Overall, the movie had a good cast and was realistic. This is a movie that speaks truths about life, drugs, jealousy, and death. It shows how even though at times it feels like you're trapped and there is no way out, somehow if you search hard enough, you will always find a way out. "Under Hellgate Bridge" also depicts the fact that some people will never change, no matter what. Some people are destined to never change their ways while others are destined to overcome their problems and change their lives. This movie portrays humanity: the cruel, the vengeful, the greedy, the innocent, the weak, and the ones who fight to live a life that no one is determined to give them.

For and Indie it was well worth the watch..
msmuldoon10 June 2002
Well shot and terrific acting this film grabs and harnesses the energy of the true New York rough and tough underworld. Director Mike Sergio does a wonderful job capturing New York and proving that these streets should never be emulated anywhere else in the world. Former Another World (my girldfriend watched) actor Michael Rodrick proved that he can definately hold his own on screen with name talent...ie Big Pussy and Uncle Junior from The Sopranos...

I'd say definately worth watching....I heard that it was going to be released on DVD...we'll see.

compelling, passionate, well-made independent film
filmbabies14 July 2000
I recently saw this film at the Nashville Independent Film Festival where it won the top award, and it's obvious why. The acting was amazing.... everyone in the audience was blown away.

This is a beautifully shot, well directed and produced independent film with a compelling story involving two old rivals who confront each other in a battle for love and power on the mean streets of New York City. Can't wait for it to open

Rather finely written crime thriller
martinpersson971 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This crime drama, by a great director, and starring some stellar cast, is definitely a gem I would highly recommend!

The actors all do an incredible job, conveying a stellar, subtle and raw portrayal for the ages, and accompining the ever suspenseful and exciting, finely paced script. Overall very nicely written, for sure.

The cinematography, cutting and editing is great, and the film is overall very beautifully put together, very finely shot and features some great imagery.

Overall, definitely a piece I would highly recommend for any lover of film, and one that should not be overlooked. Great crime flick, for sure!

Indie darling
contact-3236327 November 2019
Under Hellgate Bridge is an independent-film darling with half the cast of The Sopranos -- a must-see for any over of New York mafia cinema. Check out the early starring role for Michael Rodrick, who is now appearing on Castle Rock.

Unfortunatly poor...
stamper_uk19 November 2003
I was attracted to this garbage by the information button on sky tv which said "Uncle Junior and Big Pussy of the sopranos star in this film." Absolute tripe their roles are small and non essential, both play easily dispensable characters and i have the feeling these two very fine actors were simply added to promote a film which has no real originality and nothing to teach us. This film has alot of dialogue which could have made the film more mental that physical but the speeches are unsatisfying and repetitive.

Poorly made, made me poorly
