Stranger Things season 2 lives up to the high expectations set last year. Spoilers ahead in our review...

Considering their affinity for the punk rhythms of The Clash, the creative team behind Stranger Things would have been very aware of the trickiness of that ‘difficult second album’ following a smash-hit first season on Netflix that earned the show rapturous critical and commercial praise. After all, Difficult Second Album Syndrome is a real thing, (it has to be, I’ve already started capitalising it now… at this rate it’ll be an acronym before long) and there are many bands out there, The Clash included, who found it impossible to deliver on the promise of their breakthrough success second time around.

The trailer for Stranger Things season 2 from this year’s Comic-Con has plenty of Upside Down details. Our Us chums take a closer look…
With Stranger Things season 2 getting ready to air on October the 27th, right before Halloween, it seems appropriate that its trailer not only include plenty of horrific images of the Upside Down but also feature the chilling voiceover of late, great king of horror, Vincent Price, straight out of Michael Jackson’s Halloween favorite, Thriller. With plenty of 80s nostalgia and hints at answers to long-held questions, the Stranger Things season 2 trailer, which you can view here, has plenty to analyze. Here are some of the things we spotted...

As a child of the 80s, I say without shame that my heart leapt when I saw the boys enter the arcade to play Dragon’s Lair.

Growing up, I think most of us would agree that Halloween specials were essential viewing throughout the month of October, but as time has gone on, a lot of those specials have faded with the passing years, only coming out unofficially online, on VHS (which in some cases were very limited releases), or as early DVD releases that can now run you upwards of $100 just to snag a copy.
I put together this list of five obscure Halloween specials for horror fans to dig up and enjoy. Of course, there are thousands of amazing retro finds to watch, so this list should at the very least help you get started and put you in a macabre mood as you prepare for October 31st!

I don’t get to the theater a heck of a lot, truth be told I haven’t been at all this year, so the majority of the films I watch are enjoyed in the comfort of my home. Therefore any “Best Films of 2014” list you see from me would likely only have one or two entries on it, and that wouldn’t be very fun.
Instead I decided to keep track of all the films I saw for the very first time in 2014; some of them actually were released this year but others go back more than fifty years. So prepare to mock me for how long I’ve had these gaps in my film watching experience as you discover…The Ten Best Films I Saw in 2014!
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
2014 saw the release of two excellent Marvel films, Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The King Baggot Tribute will take place Friday, November 14th at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium beginning at 7pm as part of this year’s St. Louis Intenational FIlm Festival. The program will consist a rare 35mm screening of the 1913 epic Ivanhoe starring King Baggot with live music accompaniment by the Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra. Ivanhoe will be followed by an illustrated lecture on the life and films of King Baggot presented by Tom Stockman, editor here at We Are Movie Geeks. After that will screen the influential silent western Tumbleweeds (1925), considered to be one of King Baggot’s finest achievements as a director. Tumbleweeds will feature live piano accompaniment by Matt Pace.

1976 saw the publication of John Brosnan’s excellent book The Horror People. Written during the summer of 1975, it makes interesting reading 40 years down the line. Those who feature prominently in the book – Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, Jack Arnold, Michael Carreras, Sam Arkoff, Roy Ward Baker, Freddie Francis, Robert Bloch, Richard Matheson and Milton Subotsky – were still alive, as were Ralph Bates, Mario Bava, Jimmy Carreras, John Carradine, Dan Curtis, John Gilling, Robert Fuest, Michael Gough, Val Guest, Ray Milland, Robert Quarry and Michael Ripper, all of whom were given a mention. Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Junior, Michael Reeves and James H Nicholson were not long dead. Hammer, Amicus and American International Pictures were still in existence. George A Romero had yet to achieve his prominence and Stephen King wasn’t even heard of!

Review Jake Laverde 11 Jul 2013 - 06:30
Already renewed for a second series, Jake checks out the first episode of Count Arthur Strong's television show...
This review contains spoilers.
1.1 Memory Man
Steve Delaney, in character as Count Arthur Strong, has been on the live circuit since the late nineties. He made the leap to radio in 2005 with, appropriately enough, Count Arthur Strong's Radio Show, picking up awards during its seven-series run. So why has it taken until 2013 for him to get onto TV?
The simple answer is that the studio sitcom is currently enjoying a welcome resurgence. Miranda, Citizen Khan, Not Going Out, Red Dwarf X and Vicious have all enjoyed great success showing there's plenty of life in the format. There's also Mrs Brown's Boys but let's put that aside for a moment. After The Office became a hit, there was a feeling that studio sitcoms were old-fashioned pantomime.

Deadbeat - Makes You Stronger (review here) proves that sometimes death is only the start of our problems. We recently chatted with author Guy Adams about his new novel, what inspired its dark moments and what lies ahead for the Deadbeat series.
Amanda Dyar: Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk with us. To start off, can you tell us a little about yourself and your recent work as a writer?
Guy Adams: No problem at all, thanks for asking me!
I'm an English writer currently living in Spain because if you're going to lock yourself in your office all day, it may as well be a nice outside world you're not seeing.
I've done a real mixture of stuff over the years. I wrote a novel called The World House for Angry Robot books followed by a sequel Restoration. I've written three novels...

The St. Louis Globe-Democrat is a monthly newspaper run by Steve DeBellis, a well know St. Louis historian, and it’s the largest one-man newspaper in the world. The concept of The Globe is that there is an old historic headline, then all the articles in that issue are written as though it’s the year that the headline is from. It’s an unusual concept but the paper is now in its 25th successful year! Steve and I collaborated recently on an all-Vincent Price issue of The Globe in 2011 and he has asked me to write a regular monthly movie-related column. This month’s St. Louis Globe-Democrat is written as if it’s 1949, the year Joe Besser starred with Abbott and Costello in the comedy Africa Speaks. We are publishing several Joe Besser articles in this issue to help promote the upcoming Joe Besser Film Festival which will...

This is the sixth in a multi-part series, The Year in Television 2011.
Not everyone can be a TV actor Mvp. You have to have charisma, talent, and you need a memorable part that plays to your particular strengths on a well-written show. Also, good lighting helps. This year we surveyed the television landscape to come up with ten people - both male and femaile - who we really thought broke out from the pack and made inordinate contributions to their respective shows. Some are newcomers, others have been acting for years. These are the break out TV actors of 2011 and, speaking of lighting, we'd like to shine a little more on them.
Aaron Ashmore, Warehouse 13
After years playing Jimmy Olsen on Smallville, Aaron Ashmore joined season 3 of Warehouse 13 as Steve Jinks, a gay Atf agent with the unique ability to tell whether someone is lying.
It's not easy...

A genre constantly overlooked at awards ceremonies, sci-fi cinema is full of stunning performances. Here’s a list of 10 that deserved Oscar attention…
There are certain aspects of cinematic storytelling that Oscar judges absolutely love: feel-good dramas in which characters triumph over adversity, sweeping period epics, or films in which a popular Hollywood actor undergoes some startling, uncharacteristic change (see Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, for example, or Ben Kingsley in Ghandi) are a few examples.
Should a film somehow incorporate all three of these features, it will almost certainly walk away with an entire armful of golden statues. It’s a depressing fact, meanwhile, that genre movies are regularly overlooked by almost all mainstream film awards, and not just the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
