Something lost in translation
sangepengyou30 March 2005
5 actresses with 5 big secrets who are so determined to keep them in the closet that they lie, cheat, steal, deceive, betray and are even capable of murder. It is a cutthroat business and the plot is full of delicious promise. But---

Alas, not nearly so WICKEDLY funny or as shamelessly sassy and satirical as the book. Based on one of the most delightfully naughty books ever written about Hollywood, something was definitely lost in the screen translation which retained the great premise but somehow lost its way.

Cast does a worthy effort with what was given to them, but the script is awkward at times and lacks the spirit of mischievousness that was so endearing in the novel. Too bad, what a true gem this would have been if it had been truly faithful to the spirit of the book BUT the danger of lawsuits might have been too hot to handle!

Pretty funny for a TV movie.

Warning: Spoilers
I must admit, thinking that E! came up with an original movie brought a little chuckle out of me. It's not that this network is poorly put together. In fact, most of their shows are the better ones. It's just that it didn't seem like it would be put together well. One of those low budget, no acting talent movies.

Well, I liked it. The five actresses that portray the nominees for best actress are really good. The characters then, are also decent. I particularly liked Loretta Devine's character, Connie Travers. But all of them were enjoyable. It was nice to see a group of not-too-famous actresses for a change.

**Minor Spoiler**

The plot of the film is a bit shaky but the writing kept me interested. The different storylines with each nominee were put together well with the exception of Fiona Covington, played by Rachel Hunter. The whole lesbian thing didn't do too much for the film, but the thing with Lori and Maria was better. The ending was quite of a shock. Even though we were told what was going to happen at the beginning, I didn't think that the person who got shot was actually going to be that person. And the whole thing with Ted being dead and narrating the story for us was a nice touch.

I can honestly say that this is an enjoyable, cute, funny little movie that the wonderful network of E! has come up with. (I loved the scenery shots at the very beginning.)
