Welcome to misogyny, boys and girls
francined-218 December 1999
It was painful to watch this film because of the misogyny and vile characters. Such methods can be used to make a point, of course, but these characters do little to arouse any emotion other than a base hatred of all youth. Watching this film is a lot like being at a bad party: it's not even as fun as witnessing a car accident. I'm all for supporting local talent, but surely the creators of this film could look for plot lines beyond ego-swapping lies told at a bachelor's party and create characters that might spark some interest from a viewer not related to the cast and crew.

As real as real gets

We live in a film culture that is based on dreams, best case scenarios and constant optimism, but we live in a life that rarely exhibits these traits. Some people like romantic comedies and that's fine. I like art that has relevance and a connection to reality and the Dirty Sanchez is an excellent example of that. It's not the prettiest movie I've laid eyes on, but I got the point. The camera work and semi-documentary feel lent a further reality to the movie, making me feel like I was in the room with the characters and not watching them from an omnipotent point of view. The language is harsh and the character's world views are harsher, but the kind hearted underdog makes good has been done a thousand times. Without being led into one judgement or another, we get a chance to see the ugliest the spoiled suburbs have to offer. The script is misogynistic, but it's not simple. The characters aren't presented as typical movie heroes, they are shown on the light and dark sides without prejudice to either. The movie looks low budget and obviously is, but if you like dialogue and character driven films, this is true to that form. There aren't any special effects, but there aren't any corny, predictable plots
