Puttin' on yet another magic show.
planktonrules9 September 2020
A sorcerer puts on a magic show for his lord. Women appear from nothing and later their clothes change. An acrobat appears from nothing and appears and disappears.

While the setting and costumes are different, "Le Sorcier" is essentially the same film as about a hundred other Georges Méliès. A guy performs a magic show and through various camera tricks, things appear and disappear. This one is a bit better than most, as it's a bit longer...but it's far from the filmmaker's best work. Also, while I know most won't care, the costumes are from all different eras and it's obvious they just used what they had on hand.

Witch's Revenge, The (1903)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

aka Le Sorcier

Somewhat entertaining film from director Melies has an elderly man brought into a King's chamber having been accused of being a witch. That's the story pretty much as this film starts off very slowly but finally picks up towards the end. The old man appears to be fighting the claims of being a witch yet he then goes and starts doing these magic tricks, which I'm sure would have gotten him killed as it would prove he has special powers. Either way, the film starts off very slowly and just wonders around until the final minute when the magic tricks start up. These tricks include making a chair spin around before eventually turning it into a man and then turning the man back into a chair. The effects are very well done and still hold up well today. Melies, playing the witch, is very energetic throughout.

The King Pays the Price

What appears to be a wizard begs the King for his life. It doesn't look good until the King realizes he can use this guy for his own purposes. He gets the wizard to concoct a stage where three women appear. The King chooses one. And then all hell breaks loose with a series of table turnings. The King should have left well enough alone. The tricks done here are very good and creative. Check out the business with the chair.
