There was one occasion when Dev Anand, forced to quit a blue-collar job he depended on for sustenance, ripped his elder brother Chetan Anand of Rs (the then) princely sum of Rs 5,000 to launch a less than moral venture, and if this was not enough, began wooing the girl his younger brother Vijay ‘Goldie’ Anand fancied, and eventually in luring her away.
If these sordid revelations shock you, do not think too badly of Dev Anand. Romantics are gushing through the ears and the trigger is Dharmendra crooning – अभी न जाओ छोड़कर – to Shabana Azmi which culminates in an impromptu kiss in ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’. The original song from Dev Anand’s Hum Dono still is a swan song for the lovers especially when the lady in question is planning to leave, while the boy has the innate desire that she stays, and this yearn is not relegated to teenagers. It continues to reverberate through the ages ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ has amplified it.
I am reminded of a party that we were attending in Ranchi. It was around midnight and as the guests started walking away, I snatched the mike and started singing this evergreen song and those who had taken their cars out of the parking lots dumped it, came back and we kept on singing...

Sadhana Shivdasani, or Sadhana, as she was famously known in Hindi cinema, passed away quietly on Friday Christmas day December 25 at the Hinduja hospital in Mumbai. She lived and died a recluse. Luckily, she had a nephew with her when she passed away. I remember the one time that I managed to interview her. She was reluctant to talk and after a few questions quickly excused herself saying she had to rush to the bank. Sadhana was the ultimate enigma. No wonder, director Raj Khosla repeatedly cast her as the mystery woman in Woh Kaun Thi, Mera Saaya and Anita. In the late 1950s and throughout 1960s, Sadhana excelled in roles that required a naturalistic approach. This, at a time when Indian mainstream cinema required exaggerated drama. Says Sanjay Leela Bhansali, "Sadhanji preferred mellow drama to melodrama. Her performance in films like Bimal Roy's Parakh, Dev Anand's...

"Sadhana's going away so suddenly has shaken me. I had gone to meet her a few weeks ago. She was not well and she was fighting her illness. Sadhana was one of bravest women I knew. We were very close friends. And we-Sadhana, Waheeda Rehman and I would meet for dinner and movies regularly. Lately, she was besieged by problems. She was fighting five court cases for the custody of her home. Can you imagine this ill aging woman who never liked to be seen in public, all alone with fat files standing up in court all alone? Once she had fractured her leg and had to meet the Police Commissioner. She went to his office. He had to come down and meet her because she couldn't climb up. Waheeda and I wanted to meet her more often, just be there for her. But, she would not want...

Born in a Sindhi family, Sadhana aka Sadhana Shivdasani debuted in Bollywood with the 1960 film Love in Simla. While she is known for films like Hum Dono, Ek Musafir Ek Hasina, Mere Mehboob, Woh Kaun Thi, Mera Saaya among others, she also gained popularity tremendously in the world of Indian fashion with a special fringe hairstyle which is still known as the 'Sadhana cut'. Every major actor and actress in Bollywood will at one stage attempt the double role. It is up there on every distinguished star’s curriculum vitae. There a countless examples Hum Dono (Dev Anand), Ram aur Shyam (Dilip Kumar), Seeta aur Geeta (Hema Malini), Apu Raja (Kamal Hassan), Chaalbaaz (Sri Devi), Kishan Kanhaiya (Anil Kapoor) and many many more. In addition to these we have Amitabh Bachchan’s own contributions to the double role genre, but to celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema and its great tradition of double roles, we thought we would choose a slightly different film – Mahaan.
A triple role! Now that is is a completely different level and there is only one actor, the superstar of Indian cinema, who has truly attempted and achieved that – Amitabh Bachchan. Father, son and son – that was Mahaan. The father donned a beard, one son a moustache, the other clean shaven.

Mumbai, Sep 26: Thursday marks the 90th birth anniversary of Dev Anand and it is time to revisit some of his best movies like "Hum Dono", "Tere Mere Sapne" and "Guide".
Here is a list of the 10 best films of Bollywood's evergreen star, who died in 2011 aged 88.
"Rahi" (1953): One of Dev Saab's unknown gems. Based on litterateur Mulk Raj Anand's story "The Wayfarer", the film about the relationship between British colonists and Indians was shot in a neo-realistic light by progressive intellectual director K.A. Abbas. Very seldom did Dev Anand step into the territory of the unwaveringly experimental cinema. He did so.

Dev Anand's Hum Dono which has been released in colour after 50 years, when it was first released, saw the return of the romantics of the era gone by to visit the nostalgia once again and soak in the ambience of romance. Though there have been previous attempts of coloring the movie and releasing them again, notables among them being Naya Daur and Mughal-e-azam, they could not attain success at the box office primarily owing to the reason that the content was not contemporary.
