Albert Maysles: Gimme Some Truth

I'm sick and tired of hearing things/From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocritics/All I want is the truth/Just gimme some truth/I've had enough of reading things/By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians/All I want is the truth/Just gimme some truth. – John Lennon
Albert and David Maysles are generally regarded as the fathers of the modern American documentary film. Beginning in the early 1960s, their pioneering work with contemporaries such as Robert Drew, Richard Leacock and D.A. Pennebaker helped launch the “Direct Cinema” movement, devoted to capturing real life as closely as possible, in all its unscripted reality. Today, filmmakers like Michael Moore, reality TV and every news magazine on the air and on the web can trace their linage back to the Maysles brothers.

"Reincarnated" -- directed by Vice magazine editor and first-time feature documentary filmmaker Andy Capper -- tells the true story of Snoop Dogg's divinely inspired trip to Jamaica and the effect that it had on the man he has become today. It world premieres tonight in Toronto. Capper, a long-time fan of Snoop's work, sought muse in Dr. Dre and Fab Five Freddy's "Murder Was the Case," a 1994 short film that starred Snoop Dogg, among other documentaries -- such as Leon Gast's 1996 documentary, "When We Were Kings," and Jonas Mekas and Andrew Solt's Lennon-inspired "Gimme Some Truth". "Reincarnated" is meant to chart the artist's journey from dark to light: Snoop's evolution from a 'Dogg' to a 'Lion,' and the creation of a new record. What the movie is really about: "Snoop's life story set against a real, personal transformation and an examination of...

Relive the warts-and-all making of John Lennon's classic album Imagine in Gimme Some Truth. A precious record of a genius at work, this documentary is as honest as it is entertaining. Independently edited from original 16mm footage, the film bears witness to every stage of the recording process, as Lennon, Yoko Ono, co-producer Phil Spector and a host of extremely talented musicians work to create a masterpiece.

In 2009, the number of leading lesbian characters on primetime broadcast TV doubled — from one to two.
Out of the estimated 600 lead and supporting characters on network TV, seven of them of are lesbian or bisexual. And of those seven, five of them kissed women last year. And of those five, three of them made out during Sweeps.
Things looked bleak at the beginning of the year, but with the growing trend of lesbian brides getting gunned down or cheating on their wedding days, and the continued trend of bisexual characters only expressing their same-sex attraction during Sweeps, and the loss of Showtime's lesbian drama The L Word, we're ending the year on a downward spiral in terms of lesbian visibility.

Our reviews for this past week are down a couple of shows, thanks primarily to baseball. Fringe was a no-show on account of the former, and Supernatural offered us a repeat of this season's premiere.
That said, we've got some new entries in the mix, which we'll be continuing as well. Blaine Kyllo chimes in with his thoughts on this past week's episodes of House, 30 Rock and Dollhouse (the latter of which returned to the airwaves after a one week absence).
With choices reduced on account of America's favorite pastime, viewers had a second look at shows they might have otherwise missed the first go-round, in their quest for something to watch, and this benefited FlashForward, which earned its best audience since its second week, picking up a 6.2 rating/10 share.
Meanwhile, according to the stats, Fringe, which has been a big ratings loser in its sophomore season, saw an uptick the week ending Oct.

Oh, FlashForward, I really do want to love you. But I keep finding that I just can't. Last night's episode of FlashForward ("Gimme Some Truth") was the worst yet and underlined once again the problems that I have with the series, which seems to be coasting by on some lazy plotting, wooden acting, and an odd mix of tones that's ultimately frustrating. Despite its promising concept and a pilot episode that had one of the best cliffhanger endings in recent memory, subsequent episodes of FlashForward have been alternately dull and unintentionally hysterical. (What it needs to be is better.) There are moments of cleverness, such as last week's Bjork-laden opening sequence but for the most part, FlashForward continues to chug along at an almost glacial pace, introducing new mysteries that aren't all that compelling and forcing many of the characters into situations that are just completely unbelievable. (Last night's example:...

FlashForward traveled to D.C. this week, taking an assortment of developments and questions with it.
While the episode focused mainly on Mark's hazy vision and Stan's shady relationship with various players in the nation's capital, it still managed to create new mysteries all around.
A few hours, and a good night's sleep, behind us since "Gimme Some Truth" aired, these are the questions foremost on our minds:
Will the President be dead by the time April 29, 2010 rolls around? Who sent that text message to Olivia? Is Janis really a goner? Why doesn't Demetri go hide out in a cabin, with a gun aimed at the door on March 15, for the next few months? Is Aaron supposed to have an accent or not?!? Will Olivia confront Mark about his drinking?
Have any answers, or theories, regarding these issues? We'd love to hear them!
You can also take a quick look at next week's episode,...

The first major death on FlashForward likely took place this week.
Before we get into a review below, which includes our take on this individual's probable passing, readers can catch up on the episode "Gimme Some Truth" by following our link. All set? Here we go...
This Worked: Rip, Janis, you seemed very nice. But this is the exact development the show needs. It couldn't have gone on for too long blindly assuming everyone's flash forwards were going to come true. Now, assuming Janis doesn't recover, Mark and company will be forced to figure out how to proceed.
This Needs Work: Courtney B. Vance and Joseph Fiennes are clearly solid actors, but each is struggling with his FlashForward role. Vance overplays every scene - did he really need to overtly sigh and shake his head during the Senate hearing? - and Fiennes looks either constipated or confused. His character is stale and boring,...

As much as I like the premise of the new ABC drama FlashForward — a mystery in which a team of FBI agents try to piece together what happened when everyone on earth blacks out for two minutes at the same time — I've been a little bored with the show.
Not a good sign when the show is only on its fourth episodes (it took me at least a season and a half to get tired of Lost).
**spoilers for this episode only**
But the show suddenly got interesting again in this week's episode ("Gimme Some Truth"), when FBI agent Janis Hawk (Christine Woods) had a very romantic date with a chef named Maya (played by Numb3rs star Navi Rawat), in a development the series has been hinting at from the beginning.
It was revealed on the date that Janis is a lesbian who stays closeted on the job because, "I work for the federal government,...

Episode Title: "Gimme Some Truth"
Written by: Dawn Prestwich and Nicole Yorkin
The Story: The Mosaic Team — including Agents Mark Benford (Joseph Fiennes), Demetri Noh (John Cho) and Stanford Wedeck (Courtney B. Vance) — heads to Washington, D.C. to speak before Congress about their investigation into the blackouts and resulting flash-forwards, culminating in difficult choices for Wedeck, hard realizations for Benford and plenty of gunfire. Meanwhile, Agent Janis Hawk (Christine Woods) explores a new relationship.
Back On The Beltway: Plot development was front-and-center in tonight's episode of "FlashForward," but characterization was right behind in full-force. Not only did we get some interesting insight into how the world is reacting to the blackouts — specifically, the U.S. government headed by President David Segovia (the always excellent Peter Coyote) — but we got a nice look into Agent Stanford Wedeck, the typically sharp-as-nails director of the Mosaic Team who apparently has more of...

(S01E05) FlashForward took us to Washington, DC to see the political ramifications of the blackouts, as well as some of the maneuverings that the city is made of, at least in this reality. Also in this reality, Peter Coyote is President. I've always liked him, and I like how he plays the characters as a very regular and relatable guy.
We were introduced to a new character in Senator Joyce Clemente (Barbara Williams), and she's definitely set up to be a major thorn in the side of the ongoing investigation. There was always something a little wacky about the La office taking Mark's vision and building an entire investigative force around it just because they felt like it. And now, they have to face the music and justify their very existence.
It made for some pretty intense television. That and the bullets flying at the heads of our intrepid heroes.

At the end of last week’s episode we got a nice little teaser featuring Dominic Monaghan’s character, known only as Simon, on the phone with Jack (the man Olivia Benford supposedly cheats with in her flash forward), claiming to have had caused the worldwide blackouts. Feel’s a lot like another show I used to watch…
This week’s episode, “Gimme Some Truth,” begins with Benford walking through a parking garage somewhere; presumably where the agents took a trip for their investigation as he begins to tell someone there is good news as he climbs into a sedan with the other agents. Before we can hear what the good news is, however, their car is struck by a speeding vehicle while still inside the garage. Suited men with automatic weapons climb out of another vehicle across from the accident and one fires a rocket into the agents’ car.

Bad news for Dollhouse, as Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello reports. Fox Won’T be airing Dollhouse during November (a ratings Sweeps month). The ratings-challenged show will then return December 4, airing two episodes back to back every Friday (probably until they run out). Repeats of House and Bones will substitute on Fridays in November. See this link.
Starlog favorite Katee Sackhoff will be the next genre personality (after Summer Glau and Wil Wheaton) to make a pilgrimage to The Big Bang Theory. The Battlestar Galactica heroine will appear on the November 23 episode.
Atypically, tonight (Thursday) only features One new genre entry: Flashforward (“Gimme Some Truth,” ABC, 8 p.m. Est). The CW fields two repeats: the just-renewed The Vampire Diaries (“The Night of the Comet,” 8 p.m.) and Supernatural (“Sympathy for the Devil,” the fifth season opener,...

Tonight's episode title says what we've all been wanting to say to the Flash Forward writers for some time now. While we can't always be left in the dark given the mysteries on the show, we'd like a bit of clarity now and then. Will we get any of that soon on this installment of the ABC series?
On "Gimme Some Truth," Mark (Joseph Fiennes) has to face a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing and finds himself defending his flash-forward. The continuation of the investigation relies on him, but it's going to be tough providing evidence on something that hasn't even happened yet.

On this Thursday's new episode of FlashForward, Mark testifies before a Senate committee.
This creates problems for both himself and his wife, as the former is forced to defend himself in front of inquisitive, doubtful senators; while the latter is concerned about her husband's state of mind.
In the following clip, Mark squirms and stammers at his hearing:
Questioning Mark
Meanwhile, after this jump, watch Olivia press Aaron about Mark's sobriety. Might his trip to DC force him off the wagon?
