Described as "Band of Brothers" meets "The Walking Dead," War of the Dead is hitting Blu-ray and DVD just after the first of the new year from Entertainment One, and we have all the info you need on the film right here, including a trailer and some stills.
From the Press Release:
The "March of the Undead" continues from Entertainment One, home of all things that shamble with War of the Dead (UK DVD review here), an epic mashup of zombie and war films! In the record books as the most expensive film to ever be shot in Lithuania, it's certain to give you your fix if you're the kinda person who just can't resist a zombie in uniform. Could there be a better film to start off the New Year with?
The film is directed by Marko Mäkilaakso and stars Andrew Tiernan (300; The Pianist; Lock, Stock and Two Smoking...

Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski on the set of Cobra Verde Top Ten Werner Herzog Films
The films of Werner Herzog haunt that hazy corridor between dream and reality, where madness and the true nature of the universe lurk. They're surreal, but not by any of the boiler-plate attributes we associate with head-trip cinema. They're horrific, but never by cheap shocks. They're beautiful, but not in a painterly sense. Each one is a tone poem searching for both new images and what Herzog calls the "ecstatic truth," a blending of fact and fiction for a higher cause. There's a uniqueness to his films that's unforgettable.
I not only admire Herzog's films, I admire the man behind them. Herzog's fearlessness is fascinating. He's an artist who risks it all to get "the shot." Studio backlot shooting is not an option. His obsessive, nearly self-destructive need to film in the hottest of...

This Lieutenant has a sweet, obliging sexpot girlfriend, enough to remind us that in his career, Herzog has not offered one interesting female character
Werner Herzog is still sometimes presented as a maverick and a wild man, the grizzly bear of the film world. But as he nears 70, resident of Los Angeles, I wonder what it is he thinks he's doing. The evidence most immediately to hand is his reimagining of Bad Lieutenant – New Orleans, and it's bad enough to raise many awkward questions. In 1992 – and to this day – Abel Ferrara's original Bad Lieutenant was hard to stomach, but a work of unquestioned daring and challenge. Harvey Keitel's protagonist was wretched and wracked, depraved yet driven by a warped dream of purity, and the world in which he existed was palpable and enough to make you crave a shower.
But Herzog's version is flimsy and spurious, and Nicolas Cage delivers an eccentric,...

#5: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans #6: My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done Werner Herzog films aren't exactly hard to come by - he regularly releases several in a given year - but his two features at this year's Tiff are notable for both being non-documentary works, which have been relatively scarce in Herzog's recent years. (His last was 2004's excellent Rescue Dawn. Before that, it was 2001's much-derided Invincible.) Even stranger is that one of them is a quasi-remake of Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant, a film that Herzog claims never to have seen (and whose director he claims never to have heard of). Its star is Nicolas Cage, whose recent stretch of stinkers is almost unparalleled considering some of the great work he's done in the past. The trailer, below, is frankly insane, and Variety's review [1] suggests it's in step with the film: "The film is offbeat,...

Since 1987's Cobra Verde, Werner Herzog has directed just two feature films in the ensuing twenty two years -- Invincible (2001) and Rescue Dawn (2007), preferring to focus increasingly upon documentaries. It appears he made the right choice as these features were met with general indifference both critically and at the box-office, while his documentaries have garnered multiple awards and almost universal praise. However, with My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?, Herzog's interest in the fiction format appears to have been reignited, with two features completed (the other being his Bad Lieutenant reimagining) and yet another soon to begin filming. Now, for those of you who upon seeing the title card David Lynch Presents a Werner Herzog Film didn't immediately turn off the trailer and start pulling out your wallets- let me enlighten you as to why this quite possibly could be the most awesome-est thing ever! Ok, well maybe of the year.

Celebrity impressions are always good for a chuckle. Rarely though are they good for much more. This one, Cooking with Werner, however, is an exception to the rule. Maybe its because the subject, German filmmaker Werner Herzog, is a such a greenfield of comedic grain ripe for harvest. You may not recognize him, but you've heard this guy— his signature droll narratives dominating his docu-films like Grizzly Man and Encounters at the End of the World. He's also helmed studio pics like Invincible and Rescue Dawn. And while the actor (Will Maier) playing Herzog is probably about thirty years his junior, his voice is spot-on. Really its a mid-1970's Herzog. It beauty is its clever parity, satirizing not only the eccentric filmmaker-poet but this whole celebrity cooking show trend that has a body count over 200 by now. The writing is well-researched, complete with references to a real life bet...

Fango spoke to Udo Kier the other day for our 30th-anniversary issue (#284, on sale in May), and got a couple of extra tidbits about his latest genre project, My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done. The film, which we last reported on here, brings together the unique filmmaking talents of Werner Herzog and David Lynch (the latter serving as executive producer), along with an equally eclectic cast including Kier, his Shadow Of The Vampire co-star Willem Dafoe, Bug’s Michael Shannon, genre fave Brad Dourif, Sisters’ Chloe Sevigny and Twin Peaks’ Grace Zabriskie.
“The film is based on a true story from 1979,” Kier tells us, “and is about a young actor played by Michael Shannon, with Chloe Sevigny as his girlfriend. They’re both actors, and I’m Mario, their teacher. We’re doing a Greek play by Sophocles that’s very intense, and [Shannon’s character] goes home at one point...
