Obituaries are never easy to write, but this one hits particularly hard given the feeling of so much great work still to come: Andre Braugher, who made a name for himself playing a variety of authority figures in dramas and comedies has died following a brief illness. He was just 61.
André Keith Braugher was born in Chicago in 1962. The prodigious student attended the prestigious St. Ignatius College Prep in his hometown, then earned a BA from Stanford University and a master*s degree from Juilliard — he received scholarships to all three schools.
He considered medicine as a career but saw performing as more exciting. His initial work, as with so many others, was on the stage, in Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park productions in New York City, playing parts in various productions over the years.
His film career was solid, including roles in Glory, Primal Fear, Spike Lee's Get On The Bus,...

The first time I interviewed Andre Braugher, he was uncertain and uncomfortable. It was hard to process, coming from an actor who had made certitude into his calling card. Braugher was righteous and righteously correct or he was nothing, but it took the courage and conviction of an Andre Braugher character to shift that image as wildly and vividly as the actor did in the last third of his career.
It was the fall of 2014, just weeks after the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards. With two earlier wins already to his credit, Braugher had been nominated for the first season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, his first nod in a comedy category. His performance as Capt. Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine was rooted in the years he’d spent playing stern authority figures, but at the same time, this version of the Braugher persona seemed revelatory. Andre Braugher, who starred in the laugh-out-loud television series Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide: Life on the Street, passed away on Monday. He was 61.
Braugher’s publicist, Jennifer Allen, confirmed the news of his passing to Variety.
Andre Braugher shined as Captain Raymond Holt on the comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. By far, my favorite character in the series, Braugher’s performance as the stoic and sinisterly sassy Captain Holt is the stuff of legend. Alongside his co-stars, Braugher helped lead the series from 2013 until 2021. Not typically known for his comedic chops before landing the role of Captain Holt, Braugher left his comfort zone in the rearview to surprise everyone with an unforgettable and consistently hilarious performance.
A Chicago native, Braugher excelled at playing cops with integrity on television. He began his career playing a detective opposite Telly Savalas in a string of Kojak telefilms. Before long, he landed a pivotal role in Glory,...

Braugher died Monday after a brief illness, his longtime rep Jennifer Allen told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death turned out to be lung cancer.
Braugher starred as master interrogator Det. Frank Pembleton on NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street for the first six seasons of the show’s acclaimed 1993-99 run, then played another cop, Capt. Raymond Holt — this time against type and for laughs — on the 2013-21 Fox-nbc sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
He won his first Emmy in 1998 for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for Homicide after a season that featured one of its most memorable episodes, “Subway.” That was a two-hander in which Pembleton tries to unearth whether a man (Vincent D’Onofrio) pinned between a Baltimore subway train...

André Braugher has died. The two-time Emmy-winning star of series including Homicide: Life on the Street, Men of a Certain Age and Brooklyn Nine-Nine was 61.
Braugher, whose first film role came alongside Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington in the Ed Zwick-directed Glory, died Monday after a brief illness.
While Braugher peppered his résumé with comedies, many will remember him for his ferocious portrayal of Detective Frank Pembleton in the NBC drama Homicide: Life on the Street. Put him in “the box,” sweating out and outsmarting crime suspects in the interrogation room, and you were looking at a weekly dose of tour de force acting, as good as it got on television during that time. He won an Emmy for that show he starred in from 1992-98. His wife, Ami Brabson, recurred as Pembleton’s wife on Homicide.

For the final season of the Paramount+ show, which aired its series finale on Nov. 10, creators Robert King and Michelle King introduced the equally compelling Andre Braugher to the ensemble in the role of Ri’Chard Lane, a walking brand of a lawyer and a Machiavellian character who complicates the leadership dynamics between Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) and named partner Liz Reddick (Audra McDonald). “God Is Now Here”: Revisiting Matt Reeves’ Paranormal Procedural “Miracles” for Its 20th Anniversary
Matt Reeves set the tone for Miracles, a supernatural and spiritual procedural series that’s full of the director’s trademark touches.

Their 2017 probe led to Hollywood mogul Weinstein’s disgrace and criminal prosecution, and sparked the #MeToo movement. The film is based on Kantor and Twohey’s subsequent bestseller “She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement.”

Andre Braugher cops to being “pretty freaked out” the first season he played the sophisticated but stern Capt. Raymond Holt on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” Braugher was a Juilliard-trained actor who had already won two Emmys (including one for landmark drama “Homicide: Life on the Street”) and an Obie Award for performing Shakespeare in the Park — but doing a comedy nonetheless scared him.
“Everything’s new. I’d never done it before. Am I any good?” Braugher recalls asking himself. “I remember turning to my wife and asking her, ‘Is this funny?’ And she said, ‘Yes, of course, you’re not being deceived.’ But I kept looking at it, saying to myself, is this good? I couldn’t really judge.”
To fans of the show, it’s immediately apparent how Braugher provides a key ingredient to the balance that makes the “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” cast of characters work, from the silly to the sublime.

The Peacock Network is set to debut a serial television adaptation of the Jeffery Deaver crime novel-turned 1999 movie, which starred Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie. However, the small screen adaptation will brandish the formal title, Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector, after its main character.
NBC is bringing the murky murder mystery of The Bone Collector to television with a premium script – adapting Deaver’s original 1997 novel of the same name – by the duo of VJ Boyd and Mark Bianculli. The series – a production of Universal Television and Sony Pictures Television in association with Keshet Studios – will see the scribes joined by executive producers in Avi Nir, Alon Shtruzman, Peter Traugott, and Rachel Kaplan.

Andre Braugher has a pair of Emmy wins for drama and one could easily argue that it's a minor travesty he only won one Emmy for "Homicide: Life on the Street." He's mastered a wide range of portrayals of heroes who are stern, capable and flawed, giving them authentic, raw life. And at least for the foreseeable future, it's going to be hard to interview Andre Braugher without suddenly finding humor in his thoughtful and entirely earnest answers. Captain Ray Holt on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" isn't Braugher's first role to feature humor. As he correctly notes, "Men of a Certain Age" offered him the chance to get humane, ego-free laugher and earned him two Emmy nominations, though they were technically for drama. Braugher's "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" nomination was his first for comedy and was a recognition of how swiftly Braugher has eased into the rhythm of the single-cam and how instantly proficient...

Twenty-one Super Sundays ago, Andre Braugher kicked off his episodic-tv career as hard-charging Baltimore Det. Frank Pembleton on Homicide: Life on the Street. The role would earn him his first of seven Emmy nominations — he has won twice, for Homicide and the FX miniseries Thief — and lead to gigs playing doctors (Gideon's Crossing, House), military men (Last Resort) and even a car salesman (Men of a Certain Age).
Now he's come full circle, again embodying a police officer, albeit a very different one: Capt. Ray Holt, the deadpan commanding officer on...

Emmy winner Andre Braugher is joining Andy Samberg in an untitled Fox comedy pilot from "Parks and Recreation" producers Mike Schur and Dan Goor.
The single camera comedy follows a diverse group of New York City detectives and Braugher will play the precinct's Captain.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the pilot cast also includes Terry Crews ("Everybody Hates Chris"), Stephanie Beatriz ("Modern Family"), Melissa Fumero ("One Life to Live") and another "Parks and Rec" writer, Chelsea Peretti. "21 Jump Street" filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are directing.
If the show is picked up, it would mark Braugher's first series regular gig on a half-hour comedy. He won two Emmys -- for NBC's "Homicide: Life on the Street" in 1998 and FX's miniseries "Thief" in 2006 -- and garnered additional nominations for HBO's movie "The Tuskegee Airmen," ABC's medical drama "Gideon's Crossing" and TNT's dramedy "Men of a Certain Age."

"Most of my career has been spent doing things I haven't done before," says the affable, but slightly reserved André Braugher. "I've done horror, sci-fi, spy, thriller, a lot of history, and now finally a comedy. I've got some cop shows and doctor shows. The only thing I don't have is a 'Star Trek,' series and I don't have a lawyer show."Best known as the tough detective Frank Pembleton on the gritty crime drama "Homicide: Life on the Street" and currently the somewhat beleaguered Owen Thoreau Jr. on TNT's dryly amusing "Men of a Certain Age," Braugher also has extensive theater credits—including "Henry V," "Hamlet," "Measure for Measure," and "Coriolanus." He can now be seen Off-Broadway, at the Manhattan Theatre Club, in Matthew Lopez's "The Whipping Man," directed by Doug Hughes. Set in Richmond in 1865, "The Whipping Man" is a three-character play, recounting the evolving...

The decades-old taboo that drama series with minority leads cannot work finally might be broken.
Halfway through the castings of broadcast drama pilots this season, the top-billed actors on four pilots are non-Caucasian.
What's more, the four projects are among the highest-profile drama pilots this year.
The spy couple at the center of J.J. Abrams' "Undercovers" for NBC is played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Boris Kodjoe. "Undercovers," co-written by Abrams, marks his first pilot directing effort since "Lost" six years ago.
Forest Whitaker is the lead on CBS' "Criminal Minds" spinoff; Laz Alonso tops the Fox action-drama "Breakout Kings," directed and exec produced by Gavin Hood; and Freddy Rodriguez headlines CBS' CIA drama "Chaos," directed and executive produced by Brett Ratner.
Last year's crop of broadcast pilots included only one fronted by a minority actor, the LL Cool J starrer "NCIS: Los Angeles." The season before that, there were no pilots led by minorities.

Ray Romano returns to TV Monday, four years after "Everybody Loves Raymond," with a new series that he co-created.
Naturally, the show from the veteran stand-up and comedy Emmy winner is a drama. "Men of a Certain Age," which Romano co-created with "Raymond" writer and executive producer Mike Royce, premieres at 10 p.m. Et Monday on TNT.
"Drama" maybe isn't the exact right word for the show. "Men of a Certain Age" is an easygoing dramedy about three guys (Romano, Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula) on the far side of 40 who are still trying to figure out the direction of their lives. It's not a show that will reach out and grab you, but it does grow on you with its honest and funny portrayal of long-standing male friendship. Here are five things to watch for in the series.

Lifetime has ordered a drama pilot about a supermarket manager who unexpectedly becomes the governor of New Jersey.
The pilot, "The Amazing Mrs. Novak," is based on a six-part U.K. series called "The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard," about a woman who stumbles into becoming Prime Minister.
Vanessa Taylor (co-creator of WB's "Jack & Bobby") will adapt the series and serve as showrunner. Taylor has also been a writer on "Everwood," "Alias" and "Gideon's Crossing."
The project is produced by Kudos Film and Television, a Shine Group Company, through Warner Horizon. Shine's Carolyn Bernstein will executive produce, along with Jane Featherstone, Stephen Garrett and Taylor.
The pilot is one of a few picked up by the network, including another U.K. adaptation, "Mistresses," from Fox 21, about a quartet of thirtysomething women who have been friends since college. Another is "Drop Dead Diva" from Sony, about a vapid model whose mind is put in the body of a brilliant but frumpy lawyer.
Taylor is repped by UTA, Management 360 and attorney Cliff Gilbert-Lurie.
