Comedy is incredibly difficult. There’s a certain art to standup comedy that only appeals to certain individuals, and that makes the study of what makes a standup comedian tick all the more interesting, a topic that hasn’t been particularly explored in documentaries. Jeff Schimmel looks to tackle that subject from a unique perspective; as the younger brother of 30-year comedy veteran Robert Schimmel, Jeff has been able to view the ups and downs of the elder Schimmel’s life and occupation up close, and is now he, along with Kelly D. Hommon, is looking to document Robert’s life following his untimely death in 2010. Schimmel himself was no slouch in the comedy world, having rubbed shoulders with the likes of Rodney Dangerfield and Howard Stern, as well as having written for In Living Color and performed on Late Night With Conan O’Brien. A documentary on his life...

Robert Schimmel had a few chances at TV. The 60 year-old comic, who died this weekend from injuries he received in a car accident Thursday, wrote for 'In Living Color' early in his career. He appeared frequently on Conan and the Howard Stern Show, which made him a favorite among his fellow comics, who appreciated his honesty about everything from his sex life to his health. And there was a laundry list of maladies there that ranged from a heart attack to lymphoma.
That kind of honesty, and Schimmel's blunt approach to it, is hard to translate into sitcom success. Schimmel had sitcom pilots, but they never made it to television. He came closest in 2000, when Fox ordered a run of 'Schimmel,' which would have opened with Schimmel getting an anal exam at the proctologist's office.

Schimmel Domestic Abuse Accusations Dropped
Domestic abuse charges against controversial U.S. comic Robert Schimmel have been dropped due to insufficient evidence.

However, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office has rejected the case due to a lack of incriminating evidence.
Legal documents, obtained by TMZ.com, show Melissa, who has since filed for divorce from Schimmel, indicated she did not want charges filed against her estranged husband.
