Pleasantly bittersweet romance
matzucker20 July 2000
For a short film, Love, Death & Cars delivers a surprisingly high amount of emotion and depth of character. It also recommends itself highly by evading any of the usual story clichés of gay-themed movies. Instead, the film presents a subtle and poetic display of deep friendship that, excluding all physical aspects, is the deepest and most honest love of all.

THIS film gets it right

There's no shortage of films about straight women who have hopeless crushes on gay men, or about gay men who have hopeless crushes on straight men. We've been needing a good film about the dynamic between a gay man and a straight man, both of whom love each other, albeit, of course, in different ways. "Big Eden" attempted to do this, but the results just left me confused about character motivation: why, after years without any contact, would straight man suddenly wish he were capable of being gay man's lover?

"Love, Death, & Cars" does successfully what "Big Eden" fumbled. Kyle is gay, Max is straight, they've been best friends for years, they love each other deeply...but for Kyle that's sexual and for Max it isn't, despite an attempt on Max's part to pull it off. It's a complicated relationship, beautifully represented--one of the sweetest love stories I've ever seen on film. Not even bittersweet, in my opinion. Just sweet.

conquest the past

memories, Grand Canyon, the past and the different present, a trip and a last wish. result - a provocative film with deep roots in the universe of the viewer. because it escapes from its genre. it is only a great story about the desire to conquest a precious memory.redefine a moment, out of ambiguities. it is a film about essential things defining a life. about love. and about the force of friendship. and about a new image of reality, from the right perspective. so, a good short film. like many, a question to yourself.
