the play vs. the film
basest16 July 2001
The Blank Page was a much better play then it ever was a film. The film attempted to expand the play, but then cut a lot, losing both the immediacy of the play and the added backstory from that the screenplay added. In addition, the rapid-fire dialogue that really made the play work was lost in the sort of clumsy editing that makes a movie feel like an indie, or a student film. The cast was capable, or should have been, as the principles were all the cast of the original play, but somehow the frenetic energy that enlivened the play was missing from the film version.
