Where will the boat go
ilpohirvonen6 April 2010
Lorsque le bateau de Léon M. descendit la Meuse pour la première fois, translated in English: When the boat of the Leon M. Maas went down for the first time. It's a 40-minute-long documentary directed and written by the Dardenne brothers. Today they are very well known internationally for directing new, extraordinary modernizing films such as: Rosetta (1999), Le fils (2002) and L 'enfant (2005).

The Dardenne brothers started their career, as many filmmakers by doing documentaries. They made 7 of them in 10 years and then directed their first fictional film Falsch (1987). These early films by the brothers are interesting because you can see the progress of their unique style. Even the very first documentaries have the basic marks.

So this documentary, which was their second is about a man Leon Masy, who has built up his own boat and is sailing with it on the River Meuse. We see him traveling the route and remembering the 1960 strike. The journey is combined with interviews of other militants and with archive-material from the event. Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne are the narrators throughout the documentary and keep asking the question where will the boat go.

It's basically about the remembrance of the proletariat fights and the resistance movement in the 1960's. The documentary is a survey of the event in relation to the present.

Recommended to people who are interested in the Dardenne brothers' production. Also to people who are interested in history, especially to the certain event. A good documentary.
