For a short film, “Night Shift” has a backstory of its own which gives more than the film’s glimpse into a day in the life of a bathroom attendant in a Los Angeles nightclub.
Filmmaker Marshall Tyler’s “Night Shift”, stars Tunde Adebimpe and is executive produced by JuVee Productions, the company founded by Viola Davis and her husband Julius Tennon established to empower diverse voices and emerging artists. It is produced by Moira Griffin, Efuru Flowers and Roberta Marie Munroe.

TV on the Radio musician and singer Tunde Adebimpe has long used his many talents to bolster indie film outings, from Joel Hopkins’ “Jump Tomorrow” to Jonathan Demme’s “Rachel Getting Married” and Sebastian Silva’s recent Sundance feature “Nasty Baby,” and he’s poised to return to the festival circuit with Marshall Tyler’s inventive and styling short film “Night Shift.”
In the Sundance premiere, Adebimpe stars as Olly Jeffries, a struggling actor whose need to pay the bills lands him a gig as a bathroom attendant at the swanky Hollywood nightclub The Fix. While Olly never intended for the job to be a permanent thing, he’s found that the work — and the weird solitude it offers — suits him.

Directed and written by Joel Hopkins — whose earlier films “Jump Tomorrow” and “Last Chance Harvey” demonstrated both perfect comedic timing and a warm understanding of human imperfection — “The Love Punch” gets by in no small part thanks to the individual charms and collective chemistry between leads Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson. Playing divorced couple Richard and Kate, Brosnan and Thompson depict the semi-stable state of long separations: occasional conversations about new developments or old resentments, living separate lives. But when captain-of-industry Brosnan sells his company to a larger megacorp whose CEO (Laurent Lafitte) then robs the entire pension fund...

Shot entirely on location in Paris, and Coye-la-Forêt, France, the film and tells the story of rekindled romance between a divorced couple and puts a new spin on “retirement” while taking a poke at modern day robber barons.
Written and directed by Joel Hopkins (Last Chance Harvey, Jump Tomorrow) and starring Thompson and Brosnan, the repartee between these celebrated actors – including the always entertaining Timothy Spall (Harry Potter) and Celia Imrie (Best Exotic Marigold) – is bouncy, fun and occasionally poignant as they all navigate middle age – while trying to steal a diamond necklace in the process.

Coinciding with the release today of TV on the Radio’s new album, Nine Types of Light, is a near-feature consisting of a video for each song, all sequenced with an eye towards a longer-form narrative. From the band’s site:
Nine Types of Light is as much an album as it is a movie by TV on the Radio.
The movie is meant to be a visual re-imagining of the record, and includes a music video for every song on the album.
The band personally asked their friends and the filmmakers they admired to help direct the music videos.
Tunde Adebimpe, the director for the full Nine Types of Light movie, storybooked the music videos together with interviews from local New Yorkers on various topics, including dreams, love, fame and the future. Tunde also directed the music video for “Forgotten.”
The various directors involved are: Tim Nackashi, Michael Please,...

The prize is supposed to reward outstanding work by a first-time British writer, director or producer. However, it's been too focused on directors
Forget such baubles as best film and best actor - the Bafta that really matters, for people who care about UK cinema, is the one for outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer.
It's not part of the Oscar race, so it gets overshadowed by the hoopla around the big prizes. But it's the award that says most about the present health and future hopes of British film. Ironically, it's given in honour of an American, the Oscar-winning screenwriter Carl Foreman, who fled Hollywood's blacklist to find sanctuary in Britain.
Foreman was a defiantly independent spirit. That's reflected in a prize which celebrates the passion, the determination, the ambition and the sheer bloody-minded desperation that drives first-time film-makers. The nominees often remark that they don't feel like newcomers,...

Tunde Adebimpe may be best known for fronting the beloved Brooklyn band TV on the Radio, but he's a man of multiple talents. Schooled as a visual artist, he worked as an animator after graduating from Tisch. His first acting role was in a classmate's short, "Jorge" (1998), which became a feature, "Jump Tomorrow" (2001), all years before he ever cut a record. In his latest foray onto the big screen, Adebimpe played the groom, Sidney, in Jonathan Demme's "Rachel Getting Married." In a film filled with exceptional, sometime showy ensemble performances, Adebimpe still had a few opportunities to shine -- it's Sidney's geeky charm during the dishwasher scene that makes its consequence heartbreaking, instead of just cheaply macabre. And one of the most beautiful moments in the film, and arguably the best "I do" in any wedding scene ever shot, is Sidney's winsome serenade to Rachel during the otherwise tense ceremony.

The romance Last Chance Harvey gives Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson the chance to meet cute, dance around each other, and stroll up and down the cobblestone streets of London. It's a familiar formula, summed up easily as 'Before Sunrise with old people,' but in this case, it's a trans-Atlantic coupling that's stranger and knottier than Linklater's classic. Age plays a part in it; after all, these characters have been around the block, and they warily wonder if their connection will lead to something more. The mysteries of connection have become a specialty of sort for Harvey director Joel Hopkins, the London-based ('I'm a New Yorker [as well], I lived there from 1994-2007, so I'm very fond of it') writer/director whose cinematic career has specialized in watching people dart, weave, bob, and edge towards each other. Hopkins had an auspicious debut with 2001's Jump Tomorrow. Like Harvey, Tomorrow has...

Pooches should bark up solid numbers for Paramount Pictures. The family comedy “Hotel for Dogs” unspools into 3,271 venues and stars Emma Roberts, Don Cheadle, Lisa Kudrow, Kevin Dillon and Johnny Simmons. Thor Freudenthal (“Motel”) directs from the screenplay by Jeff Lowell based on the novel written by Lois Duncan. We rated and review the film as average. Pic goes against Lionsgate’s horror remake “My Bloody Valentine 3-D,” directed by Patrick Lussier, opens in 2,534 venues. Lussier is well experienced in the editing field horror-wise with work in “Dracula 2000,” “Cursed,” “Red Eye,” “White Noise 2: The Light” and the most recent “The Eye” English adaptation starring Jessica Alba. Also trying their luck in 3,144 locations will be Sony’s “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” helmed by Steve Carr (“Are We Done Yet?” and “Rebound”) from the screenplay by star Kevin James and Nick Bakay. Adam Sandler produces the film via his Happy Madison Productions.

"Last Chance Harvey," the second feature from writer-director Joel Hopkins ("Jump Tomorrow"), a meet-cute romance for the silver set starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, aims to attract the same filmgoers who made "Something's Gotta Give" a hit back in 2003. Like any fairy tale, it assumes an audience who can identify with its characters, who can enjoy vicarious satisfaction when the unlikely comes true or when knots come magically untangled. But there's a gap between pleasing and pandering to an audience, and one needn't belong to that audience to smell the difference.

Well my friends are gone
And my hair is gray
And I ache in the places where I used to play
And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on
I'm just paying my rent every day In the tower of song

Harvey Shines (Dustin Hoffman) is a New York jingle-writer who doesn't quite toil in the tower of song; maybe in a small office in a nearby strip mall. But the rest of it applies; he's older, tired, headed to London for his daughter's wedding and obsessing about getting back fast in time for a job-related meeting. Harvey's dreading the trip before he even takes it, which guarantees it will be dreadful, but then he meets Kate Walker (Emma Thompson), another single, singular person unwilling to confront the terrifying possibility of happiness. ...
