Australian duo Empire of the Sun are back to announce Ask That God, their first new album in eight years. They’ve also shared the album’s latest preview, “Music on the Radio.”
Ask That God is Empire of the Sun’s fourth studio album and is due for release on July 26th. After taking several years off on a “sonic pilgrimage,” the duo are resurrecting their fantastical personas (Luke “Emperor” Steele and Nick “Lord” Littlemore) and are embarking on a “holistic musical adventure” for Ask That God. “It has been a journey unlike any other that Empire Of The Sun has undertaken,” Littlemore says in a statement. “We always ‘go there’ when it comes to exploration of both the self and the outside world… This body of work represents the greatest shift in consciousness our world has ever seen and that’s reflected in the music.”

Classic rock songs from the 1990s definitely had a huge impact on the rap-rock of today but it’s hard to see its influence on Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism or most of her songs. Regardless, the “New Rules” singer explained how a certain subgenre of 1990s rock had a big impact on her attest record. She said one 1990s song in particular takes her breath away.
Dua Lipa compared ‘Radical Optimism’ to 1 classic song
“Britpop” is one of those musical terms that is ubiquitous in the United Kingdom but lesser known in the United States. “Britpop” is the name of a genre of British rock music that became popular in the 1990s. It was a form of alternative rock with catchy melodies and upbeat lyrics that stood in stark contrast to grunge music. While grunge was inspired by punk rock, Britpop drew more from polished 1960s bands like The Beatles.

The music from Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism sounds very modern. Despite this, one of the album’s creators explained how Motown songs inspired it. He picked out one Smokey Robinson tune in particular as a model for the songs on Dua Lipa’s newest record. Notably, Robinson said he had a lot to say about his legacy as a musicians.

Lipa is a high-tech, modern pop star. Her music is filled with synthesizers and the latest genre trends. However, even the most forward-thinking pop stars can look to the past for inspiration. The classic hits of Motown inspired the construction of songs from Lipa’s Radical Optimism if not its sonic palette.
Danny L Harle is one of the producers of Radical Optimism. During a 2024 interview with Grammy.com, Harle discussed one of the concepts behind the album.

So much of modern music feels like it was created by a computer algorithm to appeal to as many people as possible while having little artistic value. Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism is the antithesis of that. The album’s producer discussed his history of working with avant-garde musicians and why he brought the same energy to working with the “Levitating” singer.

Danny L Harle is a songwriter and producer who has worked with artists such as Charli Xcx and Rina Sawayama. More recently, he was one of the producers of Lipa’s Radical Optimism. During a 2024 interview with Grammy.com, he was asked if he approached Radical Optimism differently than his work with underground singers.

The best music videos take inspiration from unexpected places. For example, Dua Lipa’s “New Rules” video was partly inspired by iconic model Naomi Campbell. Lipa saw a deeper meaning in one of Campbell’s advertising campaigns and she incorporated some of its imagery into the “New Rules” clip. Lipa’s choreographer revealed how “New Rules” was meant to empower women.
Dua Lipa felt a Naomi Campbell ad showed female strength
What makes the “New Rules” clip so fascinating is its choreography. The music video depicts Lipa surrounded by female friends. Through a choreographed dance routine, Lipa’s friends prevent her from returning to a bad ex-boyfriend. In a music landscape where fewer and fewer superstars know how to dance well, the “Hotter than Hell” singer did a routine on a par with Michael Jackson at his best.
During a 2019 interview with The Cut, the “Cold Heart” singer discussed the idea behind “New Rules.

2023 was the year Barbie took over cinemas, but few would have predicted that she would take over music as well. Barbie: The Album featured several hit songs, including Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night.” Lipa revealed how that song came together. She also explained how “Dance the Night” encapsulates her personal philosophy.
Dua Lipa co-wrote ‘Dance the Night’ from ‘Barbie’ with major musicians
“Dance the Night” was written by Lipa and regular co-writer Caroline Ailin as well as Andrew Wyatt (Lady Gaga’s “Shallow”) and Mark Ronson of “Uptown Funk!” fame. During a 2023 interview with IndieWire, the “New Rules” singer revealed that she penned the song for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Lipa wanted the tune to match up with a dance sequence from the film.

Barbie dolls have had a shockingly huge impact on pop music. Perhaps the most famous example is Dua Lipa‘s “Dance the Night” from the soundtrack of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Lipa explained what she was trying to accomplish with the song and how she felt making it.
Dua Lipa’s ‘Dance the Night’ is 1 of many songs inspired by Barbie
For a piece of plastic, Barbie is surprisingly musically influential. She inspired Aqua’s classic bubblegum hit “Barbie Girl” and its various derivatives. In addition, Nicki Minaj calls her fans “Barbies” and repeatedly references the doll in her songs and music videos. Avant-garde director Todd Haynes directed Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, a film with no actors other than stop-motion animated Barbie dolls.
Perhaps the doll’s greatest musical moment was Barbie: The Album. The album served as the soundtrack for Gerwig’s Barbie and featured contributions from Minaj,...

The best dance music knows how to take pain and set it to a disco groove. Dua Lipa’s “Hotter than Hell” has a fun title but it came from some dark places. For example, the “Cold Heart” singer revealed that “Hotter than Hell” was inspired by a man who put her down constantly. Lipa wrote the song in question to make the situation seem different than reality.
Dua Lipa didn’t want ‘Hotter than Hell’ to show her personal weakness
Lipa might make colorful, vibrant music videos, but her tunes deal with negative emotions. Songs like “New Rules,” “Break My Heart,” and “Cold Heart” have an emotional tension that you won’t find in your average dance track from Madonna or Katy Perry. During a 2017 interview with The New York Times, the star explained her approach to songwriting. “Heartbreak makes good stories, so sometimes, as much as heartbreak sucks,...

Many of the biggest pop stars of all time rarely wrote their own music. On the other hand, Dua Lipa said she prides herself on writing her own songs — but the “Cold Heart” singer had no role in writing “New Rules.” The pop diva explained what she thought performing “New Rules” even though she didn’t pen it. She also discussed what she thought of the song and the people who wrote it.
Dua Lipa wasn’t present when ‘New Rules’ was written but she feels like she was
During a 2018 interview with GQ, Lipa was asked her feelings on songwriting. “I still take a lot of pride in being able to write my own songs,” the “Houdini” singer said. “My story’s coming from me. But ‘New Rules’ is a song that I felt like I had been in the room and written.

Celebrities have unusual ways of harkening back to the past. Harry Houdini had nothing to do with Dua Lipa until Lipa released her song “Houdini” from her album Radical Optimism. Still, referencing a stage magician from a century ago is an odd move for a pop singer. Lipa explained why she referenced an icon from another era in her song and what she is trying to accomplish with Radical Optimism.
Dua Lipa used Harry Houdini’s name as a metaphor
During a 2023 interview with Sleek, Lipa opened up about “Houdini.” “Houdini is an escape artist, and the whole idea behind this song is essentially about knowing where you stand, understanding what you deserve, and recognizing when to stay or execute a disappearing act, like Houdini,” she said. “It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek in terms of the metaphor, but fundamentally, it’s about knowing your worth.”

Singer and songwriter Dua Lipa has decided to go beyond her musical career trying her luck in acting. Her first cinematic appearance in Greta Gerwig’s 2023 highest-grosser blockbuster Barbie was a promising start. After Barbie, Lipa starred in Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle.
Dua Lipa in Argylle
It is certainly an interesting coincidence that both the films Lipa has appeared in have John Cena as her co-star. In Barbie, the duo appeared as the Mermaid/Merman Ken-Barbie couple. Argyle gave her prominent screen time starring alongside Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, and of course, Cena.

However, insiders have now claimed that the ‘Candle in the Wind’ singer has been working on a “top secret” new album that could be released later this year, reports Female First UK.
A source told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: “It’s all been very top secret but Elton is back in the studio working on a new album. The whole Masala style of filmmaking seems to still reign supremely in Tamil cinema, and “Jigantha Double X”, the latest film by “Cold Heart” director Karthik Subbaraj is a prominent sample, with its larger than life characters, action of absurdly epic proportions, and the plethora of singing and dancing. These, however, are just some of the elements that make the particular title so unique.

The former Beatles found new collaborators as often as most of us change our clothes. Elton John co-wrote one of Ringo Starr’s biggest songs with another classic rock legend. While Ringo’s track was huge in the United States, it didn’t make a dent in the United Kingdom.

Britney Spears made her long-awaited musical comeback in the summer of 2022 with a collaboration with none other than Elton John. The two artists joined forces for a new version of "Tiny Dancer," and the infectious single, called "Hold Me Closer," was released on Aug. 26.
The project was incredibly meaningful for both Spears and her fans, as the singer hadn't released new music since 2016's "Glory." She'd also been released her 13-year conservatorship a year prior and was finally free to create the music she wanted.

John’s final show featured a 23-song career-spanning setlist, including greatest hits “Bennie and the Jets,” “Rocket Man,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Philadelphia Freedom,” as well as a three-song encore of “Cold Heart,” “Your Song,” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”
“When we set off on my final tour in 2018, I couldn’t have foreseen in my wildest dreams the twists and turns and the highs and lows this tour – and the whole world – would have experienced in the next five years,” John said in a statement following the concert. “And every step of the way, my fans have been there. They have stuck with me, they have supported me, they have been patient, and they have kept turning out for every single last show. Tonight has been magical. I’m trying to process it,...

Sir Elton John delivered his final performance in the UK on Sunday at the 2023 Glastonbury Music Festival as part of his ongoing “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour.
The 20-song set included fan favorites, live rarities, and several surprise guest appearances. To open the show, John performed his cover of The Who’s “Pinball Wizard” for the first time since 2009. From there, he treated the massive crowd to renditions of “The Bitch Is Back,” “Bennie and the Jets,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues.”
With the accompaniment of Gabriels’ Jacob Lusk and London Community Gospel Choir, John also dusted off Are You Ready for Love for the first time since 2014. Other surprise guests included The Killers’ Brandon Flowers, who joined John for “Tiny Dancer,” and Rina Sawayama, who joined in for a duet of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.”

It was a balmy Sunday evening on the last night of Glastonbury‘s 2023 edition and the most casual of observers would’ve been forgiven for thinking that Worthy Farm had transformed itself into an Elton John clone factory. Across the site, festival-goers were decked out in sequined knock-offs of the legendary singer’s iconic Dodgers Baseball outfit, feather boas, and oversized sunglasses befitting of the man himself.
The scene was testament to the excitement for John’s Glastonbury debut and, to add to the scale of the occasion, what might...

Going to an Elton John concert is an experience — fans eagerly play the air piano, parents film the show with their cellphones like feverish teenagers, and attendees wear sequined blazers, studded rhinestone glasses and fuzzy scarves to match the style of the Rocket Man.
All this was captured in Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, which aired live on Disney+ on Nov. 20. The concert took place 47 years after John’s historic 1975 performance at the Los Angeles ballpark that cemented his superstar status.
“The love from the audience, the kindness, the generosity, the loyalty — it’s been like one big party,” John says of the stop on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, which wraps July 8 in Stockholm. “It’s like the end of an era, and it’s a happy end to an era.”

In the reflected light of Elton John’s diamond-studded lapels, aided by the hundreds of flashing pairs of Elton specs out in the arena, the end of the road – yellow brick, naturally – is in sight. We’ve fallen for the arena-filling farewell tour scam so often now that it’s an industry joke – Roger Waters is currently on what’s nudgingly billed as his first. But five years and almost 300 shows into Elton John’s globe straddling long goodbye – Farewell Yellow Brick Road, the highest-grossing tour in history – it’s hard to doubt Sir Reg’s sincerity.
“I need to be with my family,” the ultimate piano man tells the O2 Arena as he says his goodbyes, gazing back fondly at his 500-plus UK shows over 52 years, and forward to his purported final gig in Sweden in July, via a Glastonbury headline set. “I’ve done enough schlepping in my lifetime.

Taylor Swift and Harry Styles were among the big winners at the 2023 iHeartRadio Music Awards Monday night, with Swift taking home song of the year for “Anti-Hero,” and Styles being named artist of the year.
Swift also received the Innovator Award for her impact globally to pop culture. According to iHeartRadio, the Grammy-winning artist has not only had a successful career but has been an “advocate for women’s rights and the LGBTQ+ community, using her music and platform to inspire young people to use their voting power.”
After the award was presented by Phoebe Bridgers, Swift was quick to admit that she felt “flattered” to receive the award.
While reflecting on her career, Swift said she always tried to “make the right decision” for herself at the time “whether or not it had ever been successfully done before.” Though oftentimes in the industry many “want an example of something working before,...

Taylor Swift makes history at the 3rd Annual Gold Derby Music Awards for the most awards won in a single year by an artist. Out of her 11 nominations, she prevailed eight times, including Artist of the Year, Record of the Year (“All Too Well”), and Song of the Year (“All Too Well”), categories she has won every year of the GDMAs so far. But just like last year, she couldn’t take that sweep all the way to Album of the Year. Scroll down for the complete list of winners in all 22 categories, and watch the video announcement above.
SEE2023 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year

These past 12 months have given us great pop albums. Massive comebacks have been at the forefront with new releases from artists like Adele and Harry Styles, and we’ve also seen more pop artists find success with critics as well as on the charts. As such, it’s time to dive into the most popular albums with chances at Grammy nominations (and a win) for Best Pop Vocal Album.
SEE2023 Grammys pop preview: Performance contenders include huge hits and epic collabs
Some albums are close to locks. Adele’s “30” is an obvious frontrunner due to how much voters love her (she hasn’t lost a Grammy race in years), and how big the album was in its first few months. Likewise, Styles will probably get his second nomination in this category for his record “Harry’s House,” which netted career-best numbers for him. Adele is the more traditional pick, whereas...

Dua Lipa is back on her world tour after a few weeks off, and the songstress is taking pictures for her millions of fans.
The 27-year-old pop star had a multi-week break, which she thoroughly enjoyed if social media is an indication.
After weeks of fun, the hardworking songstress is in Brazil, where she will perform for a sold-out crowd of adoring fans.
The South American leg of Dua’s tour will take her across Brazil, Colombia, and Argentina. Dua typically posts photos of the sights, sounds, and tastes of each country she visits, and Sao Paolo is no exception.
The bare-faced beauty posed on a balcony with her long raven hair cascading down her back.
Dua bared her flat tummy in a crop top sweater, which she paired with a miniskirt and fuzzy heels.

Pop legends Britney Spears and Elton John have released their new duet “Hold Me Closer.”
It was made available Friday at midnight on the East Coast via streaming services, while an official audio video debuted on John’s YouTube page along with the simple message, “Elton John & Britney Spears’ new single ‘Hold Me Closer’ is out now!”
The duo has been teasing their collaboration for weeks, with its official title revealed Aug. 19 after its pre-save availability was announced and cover art previewed Aug. 8. The song’s title is based on the first three lines of the chorus in John’s 1971 hit “Tiny Dancer,” which he wrote with longtime creative partner Bernie Taupin for the Madman Across the Water album.
“Hold Me Close” marks one of the first major releases for Spears following her 2016 album Glory and first new music since the end of her 13-year conservatorship.

SEEVMAs announce social category nominees including BTS, Blackpink, Beyonce …
We’re betting on Taylor Swift to go three-for-three in the categories we’re forecasting: Video of the Year, Best Long Form Video, and Best Direction, all for the short film she directed to accompany her 10-minute extended version of “All Too Well.” If we’re right about the top category, Swift would make history as the first artist ever to win Video of the Year three times. She previously prevailed...

Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators launched their River Is Rising tour Tuesday night at the Roseland Theatre in Portland, Oregon. The set mixed songs from their new LP 4 along with selections from their previous albums, Slash’s Snakepit catalog, and Slash’s 2010 solo album. There were no Guns N’ Roses covers, but they did tackle the 1991 Lenny Kravitz song “Always on the Run” that Slash co-wrote.
Near the end of the main set, they also covered Elton John’s “Rocket Man” for the first time live setting. “We...

The 2022 Brit Awards was a night filled with good music and fun moments at the O2 Arena in London, hosted by Mo Gilligan - with the help of Maya Jama - and held in front of an audience of nominees, presenters, and key workers.
It's be the second time the BRITs has taken place in real life since the pandemic, and we weren't disappointed with the great lineup of performances, including best new artist winner Little Simz, BRITs rising star Holly Humberstone, and best rock/alternative act Sam Fender - to name a few. The roster of live presenters was pretty great, too. Idris Elba, Celeste, Tom Daley, Mo Farrah, and Clara Amfo were among the many.
Keep on reading to find out all the winners at the 2022 BRITs.
