Sex & Nudity

  • All of the sex scenes are mostly a single frame of animation onscreen for several seconds. Rape elements are present, and Guts was raped by a man as a child (this is only hinted at rather than shown). However, Casca was on the verge of getting raped before being saved (this happens multiple times).
  • A young demon girl is shown fully nude, her breasts and genitals are briefly seen from a distance.
  • There is lots of sex nudity and rape.
  • Two main characters have sex in one brief scene. While the scene isn't explicit, the girl's breasts and buttocks can be seen before hand.
  • Casca has two separate rape attempts against her. Some men pin her down and tear at her clothes, mostly showing her breasts, but they are stopped. However, the other is a flashback of when she was younger: A man runs after her and tears at her dress (mostly showing her breasts as well), but he is also stopped.
  • There is a rape attempt involving a young girl that takes place in the first episode, but she is fully clothed and the attackers are interrupted.
  • Two characters have sex in bed from a distance briefly (nothing is detailed, but some moaning is heard).
  • A couple instances of non-sexual male nudity, such as bare chests and buttocks.
  • It is said that a nobleman abuses young boys to satisfy his urges. This is referenced in dialogue, while faces of distressed young boys are shown.
  • A member of the God Hand, Slan, is a fully nude female demon that is only partially concealed by large, bat wings. Her breasts, genitals and buttocks are briefly shown in a few scenes.

Violence & Gore

  • A man gets his eyeball slowly impaled by a demon claw, and he yells out.
  • A man with a giant sword cuts some men in half.
  • A man is tortured for months and they show his skinny frail body. His tongue and tendons have been cut and his skin has been partially flayed. He's implied to have been raped and castrated as well. The torturer responsible gets impaled by a giant sword through the chest and dropped into a bottomless pit.
  • A man accidentally stabs a little boy. The boy cries and dies, and the man runs away, regretting what he had done.
  • Lots of blood is shown during fighting and battle scenes. Also, there are some graphic scenes of demons eating people.
  • A man puts his neck near a jagged rock and cuts himself in an attempt to commit suicide.
  • This is an incredibly violent and gory anime, and it is not for the faint of heart.
  • Although the violence is on a hard TV-MA level in the last episode, this series mostly shows jets of blood and no actual gore.
  • This series is extremely gory with lots of blood dismemberment and disembowelement.
  • People are killed throughout the series (sometimes in graphic ways), such as being stabbed, cut, shot by arrows, beheaded, occasionally devoured by demons, cut in half, or set on fire.
  • The main character, Guts, is said to have gotten his name because he was born from the corpse of a recently hanged woman. His backstory is violent and harsh, having been raised by mercenaries.
  • Two separate-but-short rape attempts on the same woman. See the "Sex & Nudity" section.

Profanity

  • A couple of crass discussions and mild innuendos.
  • Some profanities and name-calling in the English dub, such as "hell", "damn", "bitch", "bastard", "ass (or asshole)", and rare uses of "shit".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Some characters drink alcohol on rare occasions throughout, mainly wine.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Like "Elfen Lied", it should be mentioned that this show is so violent that Adult Swim refused to air it.
  • Contains graphic and bloody violence, nudity, adult themes involving corruption and child molestation, scenes of rape and sexual assaults on women and this anime is not for children.
  • This show is truly disturbing.
  • If rated by the MPAA it would be an easy R rating for strong graphic violence including brutal medieval warfare and disturbing mature content, sexual assault and nudity.
  • If this series were aired on television, sci fi channel would very likely have rated it TV-14 and it would have to have been heavily edited, however adult swim could have shown this series with a TV-MA rating but it would still require edits. Due to these reasons it has been remained unaired on many American channels.
  • Both the war-themed and supernatural violence are shown to be pretty intense and possibly frightening.
  • A few episodes feature sadistic supernatural demons. The God Hand, in particular, could be frightening with their deformed appearances, the leader, Void, has the head of a massive brain with his eyes sewn shut and his lips removed, all formed into a permanent disturbing facial expression. He also has a deep, sinister and menacing voice.
  • The rape elements may disturb or upset viewers.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • At the end of the series, Casca is raped by Griffith while her lover, Guts, is forced to watch. The scene lasts for about two minutes and it is meant to be disturbing. However, her buttocks and bare breasts are shown.

Violence & Gore

  • A man gets his arm stuck inside a demon's mouth. He stabs the creature but breaks his sword. He then starts to stab his arm with the blunt area of the sword, and he severes his arm but gets forced to the ground by more demons.
  • The last two episodes are essentially a bloodbath with supernatural creatures massacring a group of soldiers in a hellish dimension.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The ending episode shows Griffith sacrificing his own band, resulting in their grisly demise, and the final scene shows Griffith, now reborn as Femto, raping Casca, as Guts is forced to look on by demons, causing him to cut off his own arm. When he tries to stop Griffith, more demons pin Guts down and force him to watch before one of his eyes is gouged out by a demon's claw, causing Guts to scream in despair and pain as the anime ends on a tragic note. This finale is very depressing.
  • The Eclipse sequence at the end could be frightening and disturbing to many viewers. In general, the series has a dark and unpleasant atmosphere, but the content is nowhere near as graphic as the original manga (which for context, is known for featuring what's possibly the most extreme violent and sexual content in the history of the manga industry).
