The challenges of an artist

Where does art come from and what drives a person to become an artist or create art is the central theme of "Pedro Pintor em Auto Retrato" ("Pedro Painter in Self-Portrait"), an expressive silent short film starring the late great young actor Caio Junqueira in this one man show. Writer and director Bárbara Kahane conveys more than simplicity and simple acts with the main character, she makes us think deeper about the artist's condition, the inception and ways of his inspiration and the difficulties until he reaches to his desire work, or the way he can express himself. But in order to get all that the viewer must go beyond the rational and conventional storytelling since all we have are images, noises and the lead actor's performance where he doesn't utter a word but says plenty with his actions.

Junqueira ("Elite Squad" fame) is Pedro, a painter working on a house job of painting the walls - the limited elements from the scenario give such notion with the messy floor, messy objects, the bricks around him - and there's a white canvas in front of him that challenges him to do something with it. An artist initial challenge isn't much the idea, the concept or what he wants to express but it's in how to start it. The blank page that must be written; the blank screen where words and letters must be faced and the keyboard must begin to write; the white canvas that needs colors, forms, shapes, abstract or conceptual you name it...the challenge comes from the first step and the longer it takes the worst it gets. Artist block, anxiety, the right's and wrong's that comes to ones mind overshadows the idea of enjoying a possible creation. As for Pedro, whenever he's using the brush on the canvas it's never good for him, it's maddening and he's quite explosive with that, throwing ink everywhere. While the real art doesn't come he distracts himself from time to time in amusing situations until the inspiration comes. Artists need that fuel and it comes differently to every one. But will he get to the end of it or feel satisfied with his accomplish? That's what drives our curiousity in seeing Pedro's final art, if there'll ever be one.

Here's a refreshing and gripping experience, with each moment more interesting than the previous one, and you never know what you're gonna get at the end. It's probably done time and again around the world, but the ideas used in between were original to me whenever the painter gets at ease with himself, taking breaks during the hard work so he can find ways to clear his thoughts and get the great idea (it's not worth revealing the few things he does, but you'll sure to find it quite funny and slightly unexpected).

The film's direction and Caio's acting abilities invites the viewer to use a powerful tool we have in ourselves and one that drives the lead character's impulses, vision and creation: the imagination. Without his voice or a narration telling what goes through Caio/Pedro's mind during his solo act of developing art, it's his body, gesture and face that makes us imagine what goes inside of him, his emotions, his passion and what can make an artist tick. The effect on audiences is something else, either he can get the expected reward, comments or criticism (good or bad) or pure oblivion, indifference from the crowd or that one lone member in the audience. The urgency of creating a form of art is the key for him and many others; it's not about success or fame but a suffocating or emerging way to express himself, reveal himself to a potential other side. Most of the times it's all about a personal satisfaction...vanity, vanity, all is vanity! Obviously, that here one can get more ideas about Pedro. Maybe it's his loneliness, the boredom around him that makes him go to a different route. It's all open for viewers and that's why I loved this short. Essentially sublime, inspiring and highly effective. 10/10

P.S.: as for the credit cast shown here just ignore it, they don't appear in the movie at all.
