I've recently found this 1981 BBC mini-series on Amazon and was pleasantly surprised. It's engaging, entertaining and a well done period piece. It doesn't have any of the 1970's-80's CHEESE factor that can sometimes be found in these older shows. For me, it was reminiscent of UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS or THE DUCHESS OF DUKE STREET (two of my favourites). It reminded me of being young and snuggling into the couch with my Aunt or Grandma to watch the aforementioned BBC shows. This series is definitely worth your time!!!

Overacted- watch the movie-it's better

I have to disagree with the ONLY other review here. Much as I also have fond memories of Upstairs, Downstairs and Duchess of Duke Street, this production is full of "the cheese factor" and most of the acting is absolutely hysterical or bad, or both. I stopped watching after the middle of the 3rd episode. The movie with Phyllis Calvert isn't a fine work, but more engrossing than this, for sure.
