Zaia Ventures, the venture studio led by former Prime Video chief marketing officer Ukonwa Ojo, has taken a stake in Taeps Animation Studios, a growing Nigerian outfit dedicated to bringing powerful African stories to life.
Co-founded in 2017 by long-time friends and animation enthusiasts Adeoyin Okuboyejo and Ayobami Bello, Taeps Animation Studios aims to usher in a new era of animation that celebrates African culture and heritage. The company is best known for the short film “Ewa,” which was nominated for Best Animation Short Film at the African Film Festival (Afriff) in 2023.
The studio is developing its first feature film, “Adétóún and the Heart of Time,” which tells the story of Adétóún, the young descendant of an ancient warrior. The CG animation explores themes of ancestry, heritage and bravery while following her journey against the backdrop of an ancient relic and a battle for supremacy that could alter the course of time itself.

When adapting “The Wheel of Time” for Amazon Prime Video, “everything begins and ends with character” for Sony’s head of creative Lauren Stein. “I think with any of these adaptations, whether it’s a game, whether it’s from a series of books, people come to these worlds for character, not for spectacle,” she added. “And the spectacle is really nice to have, but if you’re not connected to someone in the show, you’re not going to stay with it.”
As part of Variety‘s Sony FYC Showcase, Stein was joined by “Outlander” executive producer Maril Davis, “Twisted Metal” showrunner and executive producer Michael Jonathan Smith, “Twisted Metal” production designer Vicotria Paul, “The Wheel of Time” executive producer Justine Gillmer and “The Wheel of Time” actor Daniel Henney to discuss adapting existing IP into a successful television series. Variety senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay served as moderator for the conversation.

A private Disney club is going public. Like, big-screen public.
Club 33, the exclusive dining club inside Disneyland, is getting the movie treatment.
Darren Lemke, who has worked on such family films as Goosebumps starring Jack Black and Shazam!, has been tapped to pen the script set in a fantastical world about the club.
Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Dan Cohen are producing through 21 Laps Entertainment, the prolific banner behind Stranger Things and the recent Holocaust drama All The Light We Cannot See.
The project is said to exude the tone and vibes of Clue and Night at the Museum, Levy’s own fantasy-adventure trilogy set in a museum and featuring exhibits and historical figures to come to life.

Marvel Studios is said to be very close to announcing a writer (or writers) for the long-awaited X-Men movie, and we may know which scribes have emerged as Kevin Feige and co.'s top picks to pen the reboot.
According to Jeff Sneider on the latest episode of The Hot Mic, Rafe Judkins and Michael Lesslie are in the mix to write the script. He believes these two are the finalists to land the gig, but notes that other writers may still be in contention.
Judkins previously worked on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Tom Holland-led Uncharted movie, and more recently served as the showrunner for Amazon’s Wheel of Time adaptation. Lesslie, meanwhile, penned the screenplay for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and 2016's Assassin’s Creed movie.

Exclusive: Platige Image (The Witcher) and Mount Devil, together with The Wheel of Time’s executive producer Mike Weber, are in the works on a TV series based on Otherland, the 4-book series by Tad Williams.
Otherland (the books and its TV adaptation) is described as “an epic cyberpunk-fantasy adventure.” The summary reads, “The world as we know it has an additional layer here – hyper-realistic VR arenas that have become a new place for fun, work, education but also debauchery, crime and abuse. The mysterious Otherland, supposedly another layer of the network, becomes a mere starting point for a multi-realm adventure.
Its Inception-like mechanics contain a series of realms, some uncannily resembling the world we know, others bizarre clusters of familiar creations and characters. Among them are intergalactic taverns, medieval fantasies, and battlegrounds of World War I, to name a few.”

A raucous comedy from playwright Camilla Whitehill, “Big Mood” teams “Bridgerton” and “Derry Girls” alum Nicola Coughlan with ‘It’s a Sin’ star Lydia West to dive headlong into mental illness and friendship. Fremantle, heading global distribution, will showcase the project in Cannes as part of its Mipcom slate. The market kicks off Oct.16.
A divinely sardonic and captivating laugh riot, the upcoming Channel 4 series presents an earnest portrait of mania and biologically-induced despair in a world where mental health has been commodified and sanitized for ease of consumption. Whitehill manages a highly nuanced depiction of Coughlan’s Maggie, whose bipolar pendulum swings erratically, as she tries desperately to regain control of her fleeting agency while clinging tightly to longtime friend Eddie, played by West.
“We’ve done a lot of patting ourselves on the back as a society, saying, ‘We’re really facing mental health,’ but we’re not.

With ads, AMC+ will cost $4.99 per month, saving $4 from the ad-free plan, which has been the only plan available since the service's launch.
The ad-supported AMC+ features a "light ad load of less than five minutes per hour."
The best part? All the same series and film titles offered in the original plan will be available.
"This ad-supported version of AMC+ gives consumers more flexibility while bringing ads to the only piece of our distribution ecosystem that wasn't already ad-supported," AMC Networks chief commercial officer Kim Kelleher said in a statement.
The content on offer includes The Walking Dead Universe, Dark Winds, and even Anne Rice's Immortal Universe.

The Wheel of Time has always been a favorite, and season two has been an improvement, but this episode knocked it out of the park.
The Wheel of Time Season 2 Episode 6 proved to be a tense, jam-packed episode with incredible performances, plot development, and new information.
We can confidently say that Eyes Without Pity is the best episode of the entire series.
At the beginning of the Wheel of Time Season 2, we often complained about the lack of coherency in the storyline and the overall feeling of an incomplete plot.
With this being the third to last episode of the season, we had hoped things would start to pick up, and they certainly did!
So many things happened over the course of this hour-plus episode, but they all made for a brilliant story.
We often praise Kate Fleetwood's portrayal of Liandrin Sedai, and her brief appearances during this hour were wonderful,...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains light spoilers for “The Wheel of Time” Season 2.]
If you’ll spare a weary critic a moment of vulnerability, I must admit: I do not understand “The Wheel of Time.” Not enough, anyway, though not for lack of trying. I’ve now seen the first season of Amazon Prime Video’s fantasy adaptation twice. I’ve read the Wiki pages as well as reviews from my fellow critics. I’ve screened the available Season 2 episodes, while poking around in recaps and social media reactions. The books remain unopened, but I’ve gone over their synopses and summaries, so I feel I’ve done my due diligence. I have given “The Wheel of Time” a spin, a fair shake, and a hard look.
Nevertheless, I don’t get whatever is going on here. In Season 2, Mom and Dad are fighting, but I can’t quite pinpoint how Lan (Daniel Henney) “failed” Moiraine (Rosamund Pike...

The Wheel of Time Season 2 finally picked up the pace and threw all the main players into intense situations.
Perrin's true identity finally got revealed, as did Rand's girlfriend on The Wheel of Time Season 2 Episode 4.
We finally saw the use of the term Wolfbrother on screen, with Elyas revealing to Perrin that they both are Wolfbrothers.
The fourth episode of the Wheel of Time Season 2 managed to build seamlessly off of the previous outings' setup and improved the overall feel of the new season.
While the premieres felt disjointed and like there wasn't enough time for everything they tried to do, this round felt well-crafted and super intense.
The Wheel of Time Season 2 Episode 3 left us on an intense cliffhanger with Nynaeve, played brilliantly by Zoë Robins, bursting through the final arch, completing the trial.
Sadly, even though details of the shock around the White Tower that Nynaeve survived were discussed,...

This September is a relatively slow month for TV and movies but it’s far from a dead month (unless you count a new Walking Dead spinoff). The small screen sees the debut of new seasons of The Morning Show and Wheel of Time while the big screen features more sequels than we can cover here. (Fans of The Nun should know that The Nun 2 makes its debut on September 8.) Beyond the familiar, you’ll find a series starring Lakeith Stanfield, a dramatization of a weird chapter in recent financial history,...

This articles contains spoilers for The Wheel of Time.
In season 1 of The Wheel of Time, Moiraine made it clear that there were five possible Dragon Reborn candidates among the young people of Two Rivers, not because they all exhibited use of the One Power, but because the threads of their destiny made them important parts of the Great Pattern weaved by the titular Wheel of Time. Nynaeve and Egwene are learning about their abilities at the White Tower, and Rand is having his own journey of self-discovery… but what about poor Perrin?
Perrin, like the rest of us, is still unsure what he is exactly, and he is perhaps reluctant to embrace the dangerous animalistic rage that resulted in several deaths in The Wheel of Time season 1; however, puzzled viewers are likely eager to learn more about his inner nature. Yes, those who have read the books are in on the secret,...

BBQs, pool parties, hiking, meals with family and friends. Or … or … you can forget all that and watch some great stuff on TV this Labor Day weekend. This is a list for those who choose the latter, a rundown of 10 worthwhile movies and shows now available to stream.
The Flash — Max
Warner Bros. boss David Zaslav infamously declared The Flash “the best superhero movie I’ve ever seen.” When the film was released in May, everyone wondered how many superhero films Zaslav had watched before this one. Yet the DC title starring Ezra Miller (which is a whole other conversation) also wasn’t nearly as lousy as its shockingly low box office suggested. The Flash is a modern-day spin on Back to the Future with clever dialogue, some affecting moments and, for once, a climactic CG-filled battle that isn’t the solution to the superhero’s crisis.

Summer’s almost over, which means the start of the traditional TV season. And while the ongoing Hollywood double strike delayed production for scripted originals across the industry, there’s still an avalanche of new and returning shows coming to broadcast, cable and streaming services this fall.
While we’ll have to wait longer for the return of broadcast staples like the “One Chicago” franchise, “Young Sheldon” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” networks are planning to lean on banked originals (like NBC’s “Found” and “The Irrational”), unscripted staples like NBC’s “The Voice” (with new judge Reba McEntire) and “Dancing With the Stars” returning to ABC, international acquisitions (“Sullivan’s Crossing” on The CW) and even borrowing buzzworthy shows from sibling cable networks (“Yellowstone” airing on CBS). Programming on cable and streaming services has not been as impacted by the production stoppage yet, with plenty of comedy (Paramount+’s “Frasier” reboot), drama...

Plenty of fans of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time like to pick Mat Cauthon as their favorite character in the overall story, particularly as the lovable rogue became more and more pivotal as the novels unfolded. The end of Season 1 left Mat Cauthon (then played by Barney Harris) in a very strange and troubling place: on the run and separated from the rest of the core cast. Since then,...

Prime Video dropped a sneak peek of “Wheel of Time” Season 2 ahead of its release on Sept. 1, which fans can now watch at the end of last season’s finale.
According to the Amazon-owned streamer, the special look “reflects the structure of the best-selling and epic “The Wheel of Time” book series by Robert Jordan,” in which he would add the first chapter of the next book as a preview.
The scene, which opens the first episode of the second season, is an adaptation of the fan favorite “Darkfriend Social” prologue of the second novel of Jordan’s series, “The Great Hunt,” upon which “Wheel of Time” Season 2 is largely based. It’s also based on some elements of Jordan’s third novel, “The Dragon Reborn.”

As the SAG-AFTRA strike concludes its first full week, its economic impact has been felt beyond the industry hubs of Los Angeles and New York City. With talent unable to promote projects or make personal appearances, studios including Marvel, Universal, Sony and Netflix have pulled out of this week’s San Diego Comic-Con, representing millions of dollars in lost revenue to local businesses that have thrived on convention traffic.
In years past, car services have been in high demand during the annual convention, shuttling talent between hotels and the convention center for panels and photo shoots as well as other press opportunities and public appearances around town. Studios and networks that brought large ensemble casts for big productions like “Avengers: Infinity War” and “The Walking Dead” required a large fleet of cars and drivers.

SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland will be at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday as a panelist on the National Association of Voice Actors’ session “AI in Entertainment: The Performers’ Perspective.”
Crabtree-Ireland will join moderator Linsay Rousseau (Transformers: War for Cybertron) and panelists Ashly Burch (Mythic Quest), Cissy Jones (The Owl House), SAG/AFTRA negotiating committee member Zeke Alton (The Calisto Protocol) and Nava president and founder Tim Friedlander (Record of Ragnarok) to discuss the existing legal structures in regards to AI and the new standards that need to be implemented that will protect voiceover actors.
While the AMPTP heralded a “groundbreaking” proposal they made to SAG-AFTRA in regards to AI, the actors guild wasn’t happy, with Crabtree-Ireland telling press recently that both sides were “pretty far apart” and that a lot was still required to protect background actors from getting their likeness and images protected.

When San Diego Comic-Con launched in 1970, it was a niche convention for about 300 fans. In the decades that have followed, it has, of course, become a mandatory stop for the biggest franchises in Hollywood, from the universes of Marvel and DC to Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings. But after years of movies and TV (and top actors) taking center stage and propelling the event to new heights, 2023 will be the least star-packed Comic-Con in more than a decade.
This week, SAG-AFTRA announced that actors will be joining the writers guild on picket lines, as Hollywood faces yet another shutdown amid a historic double strike. Already, most Hollywood majors, including Disney, Warner Bros., Sony, Universal, Netflix and HBO, chose to sit out Comic-Con this year, due to prior strike uncertainty and financial stress on studio travel budgets.

San Diego Comic-Con Hall H had been reserved two Saturdays from now for a presentation by Legendary, which I hear was to strut out Dune: Part Two and the studio’s next Monsterverse movie. However, that’s not happening now due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Update: ABC’s Abbott Elementary has also canceled its Comic-Con panel scheduled for Saturday. Also bowing out from scheduled Comic-Con panels are Amazon’s Jury Duty, The Wheel of Time and Gen V.
The Dune: Part Two panel was scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, July 22. Whether the pic showed up always hinged on there not being a SAG-AFTRA work stoppage. This is sad, as an appearance by Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet and Florence Pugh would have generated some much-needed fire to what already is a truncated and sleepy fanboy confab severely dented by the WGA strike. The Denis Villeneuve sequel to the multi-Oscar-winning blockbuster already made...

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous creator and X-Men: First Class and Thor screenwriter Zack Stentz is aboard for animated movie The White Tower, inspired by Robert Jordan’s hit graphic novel series The Wheel of Time.
iwot productions is developing the feature-length animated film in collaboration with Quebec’s Squeeze Studios (The Amazing Maurice), we can reveal.
The feature will be set in a time before the events chronicled in The Wheel of Time TV series from Amazon and Sony . This is being described as an action-adventure about a young girl with a special gift whose life is forever changed when evil visits her remote mountain village. Finding herself alone in a dangerous world, she must go to The White Tower to learn how to use her magical powers in order to save her family and friends.
The film will be based on an original story set within Jordan’s universe...

This month’s San Diego Comic-Con is shaping up to be more low-key, at least in terms of reveals from Hollywood studios. Only a handful of major film and TV players will be shelling out to bring talent to the convention, with Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Peacock’s John Wick prequel The Continental among the film and TV highlights.
The decision for players such as Marvel and Warner Bros. to skip comes as the writers strike rages on, financial struggles tighten belts across Hollywood and the specter of an actors strike looms.
Notably, this will be the first time since 2011 that neither Marvel Studios nor DC’s film division will host a Hall H panel. Marvel has long said it would not come unless it could truly deliver new material (it laid out expansive plans last year and has put several films on hold amid the writers...
