Fetching young lady dances insanely...
JoeytheBrit29 April 2009
There's something slightly odd about this one... it's a bit like watching a slightly backward young woman dressed in a child's dress dancing to music that only she can here after drinking a little too much alcohol. Presumably the woman is Betsy Ross, and she's quite a pretty woman with tumbling dark hair and coltish legs. She dances energetically, but it all looks spontaneous and un-choreographed meaning that there's not a lot of rhythm to her movements. It's not a long film, but it soon becomes a little dull and you're left thinking the attraction back in 1903 must simply have been to see motion on film rather than any particular interest in the subject matter.

Strange Dance

Betsy Ross Dance (1903)

If you're a fan of these early films then you know that dancers were perhaps the most popular thing that was shot. I've probably seen hundreds of dancing films from the late 1890s thru the early part of the following decade and this here has to be one of the strangest. It starts off with a woman appearing to be wanting to look like a child comes onto the stage dancing. The appearance itself is a little strange but the dance is even stranger because at times it appears to be good and at other times it's downright crazy. At one point she's basically just hopping around for no apparent reason. Fans of these dance movies will certainly want to check this one out just to see how bizarre it actually is.
