At ABC‘s upfront, there were a few things that the network wanted to make sure you knew. 1) They are really impressed with the idea that people are going to watch Rebel Wilson do just about anything, and 2) There isn’t anything they’re happier about than bringing you more episodes of television created by Shonda Rhimes.
On these notes, the network would love for you to know that more Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal are coming your way. These, ABC would like to impress upon you (as advertisers) are really good shows. Because… hellllooo… so many people watch them that we’re bringing them back. But wait, don’t think that you’re as excited as you can get yet, because if those are your favorite shows, then we have a new one for you to fall in love with, Betrayal.

• 21 Grams director Alejandro González Iñárritu is trying his hand at comedy, and he’s enlisted the help of a stellar cast, including Emma Stone, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Keaton, and Naomi Watts (don’t forget I Heart Huckabees!) to star in his upcoming feature Birdman. The film will follow a once-great actor best known for portraying a superhero (a little close to home for Keaton), who is trying to relaunch his career with a Broadway play. It will apparently take place over three days in one location. Stone will play Keaton’s troubled daughter, Galifianakis will be the play’s producer,...

Actor-turned-indie filmmaker Campbell Scott has signed on to direct and star in an upcoming adaptation of the 1977 novel “A Book of Common Prayer” by Joan Didion. The story centers on two women in a fictional Central American country on the verge of revolution. One woman married into a powerful political family, the other has seen her marriage fall apart and her daughter run away with a group of Marxist radicals. Campbell has been in the acting game for a long time, and was most recently seen as Peter Parker’s father in “The Amazing Spider-Man.” It is unclear what part he will play in ‘Prayer.’ As a director, he has made such films as “Final,” “Company Retreat,” and most notably “Off The Map,” an indie about a family of naturalists living in the New Mexico desert that was well-received by critics. It will be a jump for him to do...

The CW’s Arrow had an abs-olutely impressive debut on Wednesday night, delivering 4.02 million total viewers and a 1.3 demo rating — the network’s most watched episode of anything in three years and its highest rated drama bow since Nikita in 2010. (Last year, Ringer did 2.7 mil/1.2 while Hart of Dixie opened to 1.8 mil/0.7.)
Leading out of Arrow, Supernatural did 2.6 mil/1.0, up 37 and 25 percent from its premiere. Nice.

Are there ever enough medical shows? Maybe so, but the pilot of Emily Owens M.D. will have you shrugging that notion off entirely. The new CW show stars Mammie Gummer (The Good Wife, Off the Map) starring as, well, Emily Owens, a surgeon-in-training her first year out of medical school. A self-professed dork in high school, she's trying to shake that image in her professional life, despite learning that working in a hospital is just like the world of cliques, popular kids and geeks that she is trying to escape.

This week Some Guy Who Kills People, the indie horror comedy hit that wowed audiences at numerous film festivals worldwide during 2011, has finally made its way home to DVD shelves everywhere courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment.
Produced by John Landis and written by Ryan A. Levin, Some Guy was helmed by director Jack Perez (Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus) and features an all-around brilliant ensemble including Kevin Corrigan (The Departed, Pineapple Express, Unstoppable), Barry Bostwick (Rocky Horror Picture Show, "Spin City"), Karen Black (House of 1000 Corpses), Ariel Gade (Dark Water, Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem, "Invasion"), Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead, the original BBC version of "The Office") and Leo Fitzpatrick (Kids, Bully).

Some Guy Who Kills People will be released on DVD this week and I recently talked with director Jack Perez about the making of the movie. Continue reading to learn about how he ended up taking over as director for John Landis, his contributions to the script, and putting together a strong ensemble cast.
How did you first get involved on this project and end up taking over as director for John Landis?
Jack Perez: I didn’t know that Landis had been attached to direct the movie when I first saw the script. Ryan Levin had sent him the script and he said he had wanted to direct it. Then he got the opportunity to direct Burke and Hare, which was a pet project that he had wanted to make for a long time. He very kindly stepped away and stayed on as an executive producer, but wanted to find a new director.

Terry O'Quinn as Gavin Doran in "666 Park Avenue" (ABC/Andrew Eccles)
ABC‘s slate of new shows for fall has a strange flavor to it, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride. The network has about as many new shows as returning ones (if you count all the midseasons), and a good percentage of the returning offerings are a year old or less, making this look a bit like a rebuilding year.
Not only is it a rebuilding year, but it’s the year of bringing back every actor and actress who ever had a decent run on a show before. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a network’s new season slate that was so crammed with people returning from something else. If you can’t make it good, I suppose, make sure viewers recognize the faces.
It’s tricky to get a solid feel...

It looks like ABC’s topper Paul Lee was half-right in his hypothesis that during the current economic downturn viewers would flock to genres that were popular during the depression. It worked for fairy tales, with the success of Once Upon A Time. But another top depression draw, horror, may have tougher sledding. ABC’s new horror/mystery drama The River launched to so-so numbers last night. The first hour of its 2-hour premiere posted a 2.5 rating in adults 18-49 and 8.2 million at 9 Pm. The second hour dipped to a 2.2 rating and 6.8 million viewers, with the show slipping a tenth of a rating point every half-hour. The 2.2 rating matched the debut in ABC’s midseason drama Off The Map in the Wednesday 10 Pm slot last year. At 8 Pm, back-to-back original episodes of Last Man Standing (2.3/6, 7.75 million; 2.5/6, 7.96 million) were down 12% and 4% in the demo, respectively, from the comedy’s last original 3 weeks ago.

This is a bummer: ABC’s promising thriller The River got off to a relatively modest start in the ratings Tuesday night.
The two-hour opener averaged 7.5 million viewers and a meh 2.4 rating in the adult demo, up 4 percent from the comparable debut of Off the Map last year. Moreover, the show lost a 10th of a rating point each half hour during its run. The news is a bit surprising considering how successful ABC has otherwise been at launching new shows this season, often delivering stronger premiere ratings than expected. This isn’t a lethal number, but I think most...

Welcome to our weekly Grey's Anatomy Round Table discussion!
Our official Grey's Anatomy review broke down last night's episode, "Love, Loss and Legacy," in detail. Now, TV Fanatic staff writers Courtney Morrison, Sean McKenna and Christina Tran have gathered for a Round Table Q&A to further discuss the many goings on at Seattle Grace/Mercy West:
----------------------------------------
What was your favorite scene/quote from the episode?
Courtney: Favorite quote had to be Sloan once again defending Lexie... ”Don’t count out Lexie Grey until you meet her. She’s smart, she’s beautiful, she’s perfect.” So are you McSteamy, so are you.
Sean: I’m all about those small moments like the simple look between Meredith and Cristina. It says something of their lasting friendship and ability to say everything while saying nothing at all. Those two are such a team.
Christina: I loved the itsy bitsy spider + MerDer + Zola scene.

Is there any chance that Ben - who was brought back into the fold on last week's Grey's Anatomy (the upside of Off the Map being canceled) - will get back together with Bailey on Grey's Anatomy?
"There's no telling with Bailey," Chandra Wilson tells E!, then hints at where Bailey's mindset is now:
"But here they all are in the same workplace. How many can you juggle? Let's just put it that way."
Player.
As for what's next for another couple - specifically, why Cristina Yang is cooking in the promo for "Love, Loss and Legacy" - it hasn't been good for Owen and Cristina so far. But brighter days lie ahead.
Sandra Oh revealed that there was a "romantic storyline" involving Owen (Kevin McKidd) in an episode she recently shot, and in it, Cristina looks "as feminine as we've seen her in a long time."

After a season in which we met gay Agent Steve Jinks, saw his blossoming Bff relationship with Claudia, witnessed Pete offer him his shirtless glory, and saw him fired by Regent Mrs. Frederic for taking an ethical stand ... we've come to the two-hour season finale of Warehouse 13.
To say it was a roller coaster ride is an understatement. We began with a tense, slow climb, followed by a rush of euphoria, then another climb, then when it looked as though it was going to completely fly off the tracks, a last minute loop-de-loop saved it, and left us wanting more.
The finale was actually two episodes back-to-back, and it's a good thing (especially for AfterElton) that they decided to combine them, otherwise the events at the end of the first part would cause a sh*t storm.
But the two parts blended seamlessly, and we didn't get a chance...

Seattle (Rns) Jim Henderson has a pitch for Hollywood: "The 700 Club" meets "Real Time with Bill Maher" meets "Big Brother."
Henderson, a 63-year-old self-proclaimed failed Christian pastor and "spiritual anthropologist" living in Seattle, believes he may have found his real spiritual calling in reality TV, and has turned to YouTube to drum up interest in his idea.
From his experiences creating and running Off The Map, a 12-year-old organization that produces events exposing Christians to non-Christians (it has even paid outsiders to critique Christian churches and purchased the soul of an atheist on eBay in exchange for his assessments of church services), Henderson has developed a potential TV show called "Save Me!" that would put passionate believers of different faiths under one roof.

Last year, ABC had some success with Rookie Blue, a cop drama that's produced north of the border, in Canada. It's already been renewed for a third season. This summer, the network began airing another Canadian show, Combat Hospital. Will it find the same success as Rookie Blue or be cancelled after one season like their last medical series, Off the Map?
Combat Hospital (formerly known as The Hot Zone) revolves around the life and work of a group of doctors and nurses from various countries at a military hospital in Southern Afghanistan. The cast includes Deborah Kara Unger, Michelle Borth, Elias Koteas, Terry Chen, Arnold Pinnock, and Luke Mably.
The TV series debuted on June 21st to a less-than-impressive 1.2 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 5.32 million viewers. It was in second place in the timeslot, being handily beaten by The Voice...

With the rise of shows like Off The Map and Combat Hospital, the days are clearly numbered for boring old super-dramatic shows about hot doctors f***ing in Regular Hospitals. Instead, television is issuing in a new wave of super-dramatic shows about hot doctors f***ing in Crazy, Non-regular Places, so we can all experience the same realistic doctor-f***ing and people getting bombs shot into them in new and exciting ways! To keep this trend moving, here’s a list of ideas for 7 Absurd Medical Dramas We’d Actually Watch. I think we can all agree: The days of medical dramas taking place in stupid old Hospitals is long gone. Psh…Hospitals. So 90s! You needn’t “inform” Alphas cocreator Zak Penn that he is treading on well-covered ground with his new Syfy series (premiering Monday at 10/9c) about individuals with – cue Mohinder narration — “hyperdeveloped neurological abeeeeelities.” No, the scribe whose credits include X-Men 2 and X-Men: The Last Stand knows full well that he’s putting a new sheen on an old chestnut.
“I have worked in the business of people with extraordinary abilities, so I’m pretty familiar with it,” he admits. “[But] that idea that a regular person could have abilities that fulfill some sort of fantasy or wish fulfillment … is just so powerful that it endures.

Chicago – Is there a script doctor in the house? ABC is in dire need of one. How could the network possibly greenlight “Combat Hospital” in light of its recently botched, strikingly similar effort, “Off the Map”? Both shows fail to mine the potential drama in their inherently dramatic premises. Medical clinics in the South American jungle or an Afghanistan war zone should have no time or patience for melodramatic soap opera.
That being said, “Hospital” is a slight improvement over “Map,” despite its generic title and lack of colorful locales. Set in a Nato Role 3 Multinational Medical Unit at Kandahar Airfield (reportedly modeled after a real-life clinic), the show has genuine potential to explore an assortment of intriguing conflicts. The premiere episode, “Welcome to Kandahar,” only hints at the possible directions that the program could take in order to prevent itself from becoming a standard medical drama destined for cancellation.

ABC Studios is coming out with a slew of television DVD releases once fall approaches, and the pack of offerings run the complete gamut of reaction possibilities. From your favorite shows, to television's biggest "oh my God, that's still on" titles, to "Woops, there goes that show," it's all coming for your viewing and owning pleasure.
Of course, all of these shows have their fans, and ABC has put together nice packages on their previous releases, and these are no different.
Whether you love or hate the shows, they are at least upping the game a bit on DVD release bonus features. I suppose it's becoming mandatory as audiences demand it, and DVD sales (apparently) are slipping in general, but I find that TV shows feel like they are lacking without them even more than films. Something about the long-term investment, fan status, and apparent ease of creation, I suppose.

There won't be a second season of ABC's freshman medical drama, Off the Map, but there's still some backstage material that fans haven't seen yet. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that the cancelled series is coming to DVD on August 23rd.
All 13 episodes will be included and presented in anamorphic widescreen video, English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, and with French and Spanish subtitles. In addition, there will be extras like deleted scenes, outtakes, and featurettes like "Jungle Medicine" and "On the Set at Off the Map."
The three-disc set will retail for $29.99 but you'll be able to find it a lot cheaper if you look around. You can currently pre-order Off The Map: The Complete Series for $20.99 at Amazon. There's no word on a Blu-ray release, likely because the TV show only ran for one season and the company...

It was a bloodbath on Friday (the 13th) as ABC began announcing which shows survived their rookie season and those pilots that would get their own. After the dust settled, seven shows were cancelled and the network had seven new dramas and five new comedies in its stable of Fall shows.
“Brothers & Sisters” was probably the most high-profile cancellation, ending the show abruptly after five seasons. Deadline reported executives discussed the possibility of a shortened sixth to finalize the drama, but high testing amongst new shows ultimately meant trying something fresh in the cushy post-”Desperate Housewives” slot. (By the way, drama on Wisteria Lane will continue until at least 2013.)
But also dumped unceremoniously was the dual-season show “V,” along with freshman series ”Detroit 1-8-7,” sitcom “Better With You,” Matthew Perry’s “Mr. Sunshine,” superhero show “No Ordinary Family,” and medical drama “Off the Map.”
However, midseason comedy “Happy Endings” received a renewal,...

With the TV upfronts coming this week, all the U.S. free-to-air TV networks have finally locked down which new shows they're going to present - leaving only their individual air times to be unveiled. While Fox and NBC locked down their line-up a few days back, the three other major networks have now settled on theirs and delivered the verdict of what will stay and what will go according to Deadline.
Most notable is that ABC has cancelled long-running soap "Brothers and Sisters" and the alien invasion saga "V". 'Brothers' has been struggling in the ratings over the past season or two, while 'V' didn't pick up in the ratings in its sophomore season the way the network wanted.
The network also pulled more recent shows "Detroit 1-8-7,” “Mr. Sunshine,” “No Ordinary Family," "Better with You” and “Off the Map" which leaves only two shows that debuted last season,...

Chicago – We said earlier this week that ABC would have to choose one of their three comedies — “Happy Endings,” “Mr. Sunshine,” and “Better With You” and we predicted/hoped that “Happy” would be the favorite. We were right.
“Better With You” has been canceled, following the announcements that “Happy Endings” and “Body of Proof” had been renewed while “Brothers & Sisters,” “Mr. Sunshine,” “V,” “No Ordinary Family,” “Detroit 1-8-7,” and “Off the Map” have been cancelled.
It’s also been rumored that ABC is prepping 10 new programs, which will be announced on Tuesday at their official upfronts.
Stay tuned for all of the details and news as it breaks.

Weekend Birthdays! Out Broadway hottie Matt Doyle is 24, Armistead Maupin is 67, and Alan Ball is 54. We just told you about the demise of Brothers & Sisters (which came as a shock considering they were in talks for a sixth season), but other shows have been given the axe as well, including No Ordinary Family, V, The Event, Mr. Sunshine, Off The Map and Law & Order: Los Angeles. B&S may be gone, but in wonderful, life-affirming news, Happy Endings has been renewed for a second season! You know what would make me squee for days? If Angela Lansbury reprised her role as Jessica Fletcher. The hatemongers at Nom have...

Brothers & Sisters will not be returning to ABC in the fall. Something tells us the producers knew the season 5 finale would likely be the series finale when they ended it with Nora quoting George Eliot in voiceover at Sarah’s wedding — “It’s never too late to be what you might have been” — and dancing to Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” In case you missed it, watch the final moment of the series below. Rip, Brothers & Sisters. You were no longer the show we fell in love with, so we can’t pretend we’re devastated to see you go,...

ABC has announced its canceling some of our favorite shows — including ‘Brothers & Sisters,’ ‘No Ordinary Familiy’ and Matthew Perry’s ‘Mr. Sunshine’ — see what other shows didn’t make the cut and the ones who are luckily saved!
It’s that time of year. Every year as summer approaches, we get super anxious as most shows wrap up their seasons and we hear who’s coming back — and who’s gone for good. This time around, ABC made a couple surprising cuts — particularly with fan favorite, Brothers and Sisters.
It was announced May 13 V, Brothers & Sisters, No Ordinary Family, Off the Map, Detroit 187 and Mr. Sunshine and Better With You will not be returning on ABC next season.
As sad as it was for Matthew Perry and Sally Field, other casts had much better news. Pilots Good Christian Belles, Pan Am, Charlie’s Angels, Once Upon a Time, Revenge, Scandal...

Updated: Pickup news flashes are flying fast and furious today, so some have fallen through the cracks as I try to stay afloat. Here are some notable renewal/cancellations: As expected, Body of Proof became the second ABC freshman series after Happy Endings to make the cut for a second season. Better With You, Off the Map, No Ordinary Family and Mr. Sunshine are canceled. Also dead is NBC's freshman comedy Outsourced.
