A very cautious social criticism
zzmale30 March 2004
The literal translation of the title of this movie is: Between Life and Death.

This social critic work of corruption and crime is made in the first half of the reform, an era in which the political atmosphere was not as liberal as the current one in China, and therefore, the criticism on the corruption and corruption related crime took a very cautious approach:

The first is that the majority of the film is concentrated on crimes, the cause of most the crime, namely, corruption, does not occupy any significant portion. However, the film crew cleverly placed the corruption in a way that even though it was barely visible, but the hidden message is quite clear so that there would not be the need to spend much time to depict the corruption, a few scenes was enough to make the point across.
