Great work of introspection
zzmale28 November 2003
The Qing Dynasty was overthrown, ending the two thousand year feudalism in China. The first country in the world to develop into slavery society from primitive society, and consequently, the first country in the world to develop into feudal society from slavery society was finally a republic. However, the opium trade was booming, not due to the pressure of foreign power, but thanks to the domestic Chinese warlords and corrupted government. The story of British smuggler was used to ask some thought provoking questions about Chinese tradition and culture, in a indirect way, and this is the meaning behind this film.
