Sex & Nudity

  • Alison Pill shows her breasts amid conversation of them having grown. This scene is shown very briefly a second time in flashback.
  • There are diagrams, and talk, of an erect penis with a leather strap wrapped around the testicles. A young female who is present is asked to cover her eyes as she may never have seen a penis before.
  • A female character speaks of a man as being cute and tough and gorgeous and sexy.
  • There is a reference to a girl liking "big schlongs".

Violence & Gore

  • This movie is centred around guns. There are many displays of, and discussions about, guns and various types of ammunition. There are brief photos and films of gory gunshot wounds. Weapons are discharged regularly throughout the film.
  • A man admits that he "blew a guy away" but says it wasn't his fault.
  • A woman shoots and kills a sheriff.
  • There is talk of a character being beaten up regularly at school, getting "one black eye after another."
  • A man talks about "taking two in the back" and sacrificing himself for a cause.
  • Characters break a bottle and cut themselves with the broken glass.

Profanity

  • Five uses of "fuck" or one of its derivatives.
  • One use of "ass".
  • Four uses of "shit" or one of its derivatives.
  • Two uses of "God", two of "damn", one of "Goddamn", one of "Jesus Christ" and three of "hell".
  • One use of "bitch".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A group of teenagers drink port as part of their meeting ritual.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • This film is about the gun culture, and human behaviour around firearms. Even in the lighter scenes there seems to me to be an inevitability that it is all going to go bad. Many of the songs on the soundtrack talk about 'loving', a euphemism for 'killing'.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Guns are imbued with human characteristics and personality. They wed, they keep lookout, they vote at meetings, they flirt, they think, they develop affection for and connection with a particular owner, they could almost fire on their own.
  • The central characters raise their weapons in a joint salute, and prepare for an encounter with the police, while the song in the background says "it's the time of the season for loving you." We have already been advised that "loving" is their code word for "killing".
  • A boy shoots a marshall.
  • In a climactic scene a disabled boy is shot multiple times and staggers along the street before he is finally killed. A gunbattle ensues with multiple gunshots and fatalities on both sides. Autopsy photos of some of the victims are shown.
