The scene couldn’t be more idyllic: an isolated beach, a pair of young lovers, nothing but them and the sea. But in Dominic Cooke’s debut feature film, “On Chesil Beach,” nothing is as it seems, and even the most striking of images can hide the darkest of secrets. Based on Ian McEwan’s novella of the same name, the film follows a pair of honeymooners (Saoirse Ronan and a revelatory Billy Howle) on their first night together, interspersed with a series of flashbacks that clarify the shaky state of their newly-sealed relationship. Set in the early 1960s, both Florence (Ronan) and Edward (Howle) have mostly sidestepped the rising cultural tide, instead finding themselves enmeshed (and often trapped) in traditional expectations that keep them from being honest with each other. Ultimately, it is what dooms them in a flat-footed take on McEwan’s compelling story.

Annette Bening has signed on to star in “Katrina: American Crime Story,” the next installment in Ryan Murphy’s FX anthology series.
Bening will play Kathleen Blanco, who was Governor of Louisiana during and after Hurricane Katrina, in the limited-run series from Murphy, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.

FX announced last month that “Katrina,” which is the follow-up to “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” won’t be ready until 2018. That’s to allow producers more time to craft the story; but the delay was also attributed to Hurricane season-related insurance issues.
Production on the series’ third installment, about the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace, will actually take place before “Katrina.” That will allow FX to air both editions within six months of each other in 2018, and perhaps put the...

Last time Saoirse Ronan starred in an Ian McEwan adaptation, it was for Joe Wright’s Atonement in 2007, a time when the Irish actress was still on the verge of breaking onto the Hollywood scene. Almost a decade later, Ronan has now closed a deal to feature in another of McEwan’s adaptations – On Chesil Beach.
Pulled from the author’s novella of the same name, it’s been revealed that Billy Howle has signed on to star opposite Saoirse Ronan for a story involving sexual repression in the ’60s. Dominic Cooke (The Hollow Crown) is behind the lens, fostering a love story between two young adults, Florence Ponting (Ronan) and Edward Mayhew (Howle), who set about taking the first defining steps into adulthood together. Awkwardness ensues.
Welcoming Howle on board to his budding new feature, Cooke stated: “I’m very excited about working with Billy on this brilliantly written role.

One of the biggest contenders for Best Actress at the Academy Awards this year is Saoirse Ronan for her performance in Brooklyn. Helping her make the case for an Oscar in a big way is the 19th annual Hollywood Film Awards, which will be honoring her with the New Hollywood Award. She’s outstanding in Brooklyn and has been impressing for years already, so Ronan very much deserves this honor. With the precursor season basically upon us, I strongly suspect that it won’t be the only one that she receives before Oscar nominations are announced… Here’s part of the press release once again announcing this honor: dick clark productions announced today that Academy Award-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan will receive the “New Hollywood Award” for Brooklyn. The musical has a story by Red playwright John Logan and Next to Normal writer Brian Yorkey. It will be directed by Joe Mantello, who helmed Wicked and have choreography by Steven Hoggett, who did the same for Once.

The King is dead. Long live the King.
Those sentences have been rattling around in my mind’s ears ever since I finished reading the thirteenth, and final, chapter of The Kindly Ones. They’re traditionally said at ceremonies of monarchical accession, but mostly they remind me of E.M. Forster’s distinction between a story and a plot. In Aspects of the Novel, Forster maintained that “The king died, and then the queen died” is a story, while “The king died, and then the queen died of grief” is a plot. A story is a narrative of events; a plot is a narrative with causality.
Aspects of the Novel is a fascinating little book, but I don’t agree with much of any of it. (Or maybe I agree with more than I remember. It’s been a while since last I read it all.) Causation, for instance, is less...

Sorry, Daniel Craig, but Michael Nyqvist will always be my Mikael Blomkvist. After portraying the besmirched journalist in the original Millennium trilogy, Nyqvist broke out big time by playing Tom Cruise.s chief nemesis in Brad Bird.s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Now he.s parlaying that exposure into a high-profile job on a star-studded ensemble tackling Anton Chekhov.s classic play, The Seagull. The production already boasts Katie Holmes, William Hurt, Allison Janney, Cherry Jones, Russell Means and Jean Reno, according to Variety. The trade notes that the independent production will launch production in June, with an eye on location shooting in Connecticut. Chekhov.s play first saw the stage in 1896, following a handful of mismatched lovers as they fall in and out of love on a country estate. Sidney Lumet famously adapted Chekhov.s complicated prose in 1968, with James Mason and Vanessa Redgrave in the leads. Variety says...

Add one more point in Dead Man Down‘s favor, since Deadline reports that Niels Arden Oplev‘s English-language debut has just snagged Isabelle Huppert (The Piano Teacher, White Material) for an undisclosed role. And the cast she’s joining is already an international smattering of acting talent; Noomi Rapace and Colin Farrell are leading the picture, while Terrence Howard and Dominic Cooper have been set for to play the villain and the protagonist’s sidekick, respectively. (Sweden, Ireland, America, England, and, now, France.)
Written by J.H. Wyman, Dead Man Down sees Farrell play Victor, a former criminal aide who seeks vengeance on Alphonse Hoyt (Howard) a criminal overlord who helped orchestrate the death of his family. Rapace enters the swing of things as Beatrice, a woman blackmailing Victor for his services; Cooper will play Victor’s partner, Darcy. That run-down is another way of admitting we don’t know who Huppert is playing,...

Actor Kevin Kline still has a special reminder of working with Natalie Portman on a production of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull 12 years ago - the rescue dog she introduced him to is still alive.
The actress was working for an organisation that sought out foster homes for strays at the time and she'd bring different pooches to rehearsals.
Eventually, Kline fell in love with one and took him home.
He tells BlogTalkRadio.com, "I knew immediately he was the one... She would come to rehearsal with different dogs every few days. She walked in with this dog and my kids had been saying they wanted a dog, so I saw this dog and said, 'I want that; that's the one'.
"He had such character but he was a wreck. He weighed about nine pounds and now he's almost 30. He was very unhealthy but had a marvellous spirit.
"I brought him home and the kids named him Joe. I would've given him something a little more pretentious, like Hamlet or Cyrano or Fidel! I like Joe, it's simple except to a dog it sounds like 'No', so he gets very confused."...

Broadway productions of Anton Chekov's The Seagull have attracted big-name casts in the past, with Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard and Carey Mulligan all starring together in a recent rendition of the classic play. And now that a version of The Seagull is heading to the screen, an equally high-profile list of names has signed on-- though with at least one totally inexplicable casting choice thrown in there for good measure. According to Variety, actor Christian Camargo will be making his directorial debut with an adaptation of the play, and has attracted talents like William Hurt, Jean Reno and Allison Janney to star-- oh, and also Katie Holmes. This version of the story will switch the action from Russia to rural New England, where a family gathers over Memorial Day weekend and havoc ensues as "a family confronts the volatile and fragile nature of love." As in the original, one...

Christian Camargo (who appears in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 as Denali Coven member "Eleazar") may be best known for his work on the stage and in front of the camera, but now he's trying his hand working behind-the-lens. According to Variety, Christian Camargo has just put together a cast for his directorial debut for a script he wrote based on the Anton Chekhov play The Seagull. Reportedly, Katie Holmes, William Hurt, Allison Janney, Julie Rylance, and others are currently in negotiation to star in the picture and Rylance called Camargo's script "delicately and beautifully written, with all the humor desperation and longing that are synonymous with Chek ...

Well, now you can make up for lost time thanks to Christian Camargo's ambitious plans to reboot this literary classic. No, really, you might actually be interested this go-round.

The are few works that have been more revered and adapted than "The Seagull" by Anton Chekhov. The Russian master's play, written over 100 years ago, still forms the basis for countless new stage iterations -- both professional and amateur -- inspired a ballet and an opera, but oddly enough, has never had a splashy big-screen version. Until now.
An ensemble cast including Katie Holmes, William Hurt, Allison Janney, Russell Means, Jean Reno, Mark Rylance and Juliet Rylance have come together for Christian Camargo's directorial debut. The actor-turned-helmer was featured in "The Hurt Locker" and Twihards know him best as Eleazar from 'Breaking Dawn,' but he's making a pretty bold career move here. He adapted the play, updating it to contemporary times, and has set the story in rural New England where desire and conflict mix and match over a Memorial Day weekend. Not all the roles are parceled out yet,...

Legendary Russian playwright Anton Chekov is getting the modernization treatment as Variety reports that Christian Carmago, an actor probably best known for his role in The Hurt Locker, is making his directorial debut with an adaptation of Chekov’s 1896 play The Seagull. The subtext-heavy play will shift from Russia to modern day New England, focusing on a family who confront the nature of love over Memorial Day weekend.
With the source material being deep and meaty, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it has attracted an eclectic mix of actors. Katie Holmes, William Hurt, Allison Janney, Jean Reno, Russell Means, Mark Rylance, and Julie Rylance are all negotiating for parts and according to the article are in various stages of the process. Provided they all sign on, Janney will star as Elizabeth (the modern version of the original’s Irina Arkadina), with Hurt as her brother and Holmes...

You don't usually hear about actors who have been nominated for Tony Awards for "West Side Story" and "Guys and Dolls" performing in Chekhov. But Josie De Guzman is that rare hybrid, a Broadway musical star who also tackles the classics. Best known for her star turns in hit Main Stem revivals of the aforementioned evergreen tuners in 1980 and 1992 respectively, De Guzman is currently playing Arkadina, the flamboyant stage performer and negligent mother at the center of Anton Chekhov's "The Seagull," at Houston's Alley Theatre. Back Stage spoke with the actor about the differences between Broadway and regional theater and performing in musicals and straight plays. Back Stage: How were you cast as Arkadina? De Guzman: I've been doing quite a bit of work here at the Alley and Gregory Boyd asked me to do Arkadina. He knows my work really well and I said, "Sure." What a...
