The ending is forced to change to the current one due to censorship

The literal translation of the title is: Ninety-Six Millions Pairs of Eyes.

The movie is actually based on the true story of a provincial official's struggle against corruption. However, the mostly true story could not be 100% reflected in honesty, because in reality, the support the official got from the higher level was from the reformers who were later removed from their posts because of their sympathy toward the students in the June 4, 1989 crackdown.

Obviously, such facts could not been shown in a Chinese movie made just one year after the bloody crackdown. As a result, the last part of the movie had to be altered due to governmental censorship, the names/characters of the reformers with higher ranks had to be deleted. Therefore, the movie lost its originality.
