Improves on a second viewing!

I watched this one twice. I originally gave it a negative review, but I enjoyed it much more on a second viewing. It's still by no means one of the greatest Poverty Row films ever made, but it does offer rather a novel plot – and that itself is a recommendation – and a couple of somewhat different character studies, especially from Dick Carter as the incredibly determined, fixated hero. Lew Meehan is along as the villain. He's always reliable. I love the way he drops his act and converts into a really bad, bad guy. Dorothy Wood plays the heroine-by-mistake (and that itself is a novel plot idea) and does a fair job of it too. While Frank (or George – take your pick) Austin plays the miser with a heart – and that's a delightfully novel idea in itself! A guy named William Bertram directed. Never heard of him, but he's competent enough by bottom-of-the-barrel standards, and he keeps the plot humming for sure. The script is certainly original. First time through, it left a bad taste in my mouth as the jokes (plural) are all on the nice guy who is accidentally killed in the first reel. But irony is the script's strong point and it's not the first time in a movie that the fall guy turns out to be the smart guy! Available on a good Alpha DVD which also includes "The Lure of the Range".
