A Great Indie Film
vanessalea21 January 2005
This film is what it is about! Funny and original...if only more film makers did what Thompson does. As the writer and director Thompson has laid out his vision in a very entertaining way. The characters come home for Christmas and secrets are learned as the film unfolds. You can not miss the performance of the Mother. She is Fabulous! The characters are real and the story tells us something about life. It is refreshing to see gay themed material that speaks about love and family without demeaning the lifestyle of the characters. Fruitcake it one of several films made by Thompson and is his best to date. See this film. It has won at many major festivals and deserves to be seen. LOVE IT!

What a wonderful, funny, smart film.

What a wonderful, funny, smart film. We laughed, we smiled, we cried, we were entertained! Short films sometimes lack true character development , this film endeared the characters to you with humor and believable family dynamics. The surprise twist was tasteful, witty, hilarious! The film was well cast with an array of fine actors. Hilary Schwartz as Susan, Fabio Sandolo as Tony, Georgia Jean as Catherine, and Robert Borzych as Brent all give impressive performances. Likewise the supporting cast added to the dysfunctional family holiday that makes this film so endearing. Mr.Thompson is one of the most talented up and coming young writer/director/film makers of our time. I for one can't wait to see what he will create next!

Great Short Film!

Sexy and sweet. A great short film! Reminds me of Home For The Holidays with Holly Hunter, but with a better storyline and more of a zinger at the end. Hilarious! Totally put me in the mood and made me laugh out loud more than once. My only complaint is that it isn't longer. Where's the feature? I'd love to see Fruitcake in a compilation of other award winning short films. The actors are right on. Robert Borzych, Fabio Sandolo, Georgia Jean, Hilary Schwartz and Rita Furlong as well as the rest of the cast were great. Director Jaymes Thompson was perfect - Not too much. It could have very easily been heavy-handed. He handled the subtleties and subtext impressively. He didn't try to "dazzle" me and just told a story - Very well. Hope to see more stuff from these guys in the near future.

Rita Furlong

She gives the precise "spice" to this nice comedy, proposing the Christmas as frame of family reunion and being pledge for gay as part of large and happy family. Few cliches, some spoons of humor, decent performances and a bit of tension. But Furlong, as the autoritarian mother and the keeper of a huge secret, ruining her perspectives about the future of the daughters is real adorable. Sure, her performance has traits of many "tough mothers" but she knows use themes in wise and perfect inspired manner. And this is...cool.
