Sex & Nudity

  • The film depicts a few sequences wherein prostitutes are seen with their bare breasts exposed in public places. This is an accurate portrayal of the film's historical setting. In one scene, a man is seen placing his hand upon a prostitute's breast for a split second, presumably about to solicit her services. A few kissing scenes between the lead heroine and the hero.

Violence & Gore

  • None of the violence is particularly gruesome.
  • In the first scene of the film, an innocent man is seized and violently thrown from a bridge into the river. However, he appears to be unharmed.
  • A sheep is gutted in the marketplace. It is quite brief but you can see trails of blood.
  • A man vomits in terror as he awaits his pending execution. This is in the climax of the film, and it is very intense though not graphic. See "Frightening/Intense scenes."

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Adults are seen consuming wine
  • In one scene, a major character is smoking a pipe.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The portrayal and depiction of the Jewish character would be considered anti-Semitic by today's standards.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The trial sequence, in which Antonio is presumably about to be killed by having a pound of flesh cut from him, is very intense and may be painful to watch. He is undressed, gagged, and strapped to a chair, while Shylock sharpens his knife with the intent of cutting out his heart. However, a loophole is found in the bond, and Shylock cannot kill him.
