One of the films Netflix is pinning its awards hopes on this year, “Nyad,” is facing criticism amid continuing accusations about the swimmer Diana Nyad’s 2013 Cuba-to-Florida swim and questions about her character and credibility.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the biopic, the narrative feature debut of documentary filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and “Free Solo” Oscar winner Jimmy Chin that is debuting at Telluride this week, has generated vociferous complaints online from the world of marathon swimming and resurfaced questions over her most famous accomplishment, the 110-mile swim across the shark-infested Florida Straits.
With Annette Benning as Nyad and Jodie Foster as her close friend Bonnie Stoll, the film is considered one of Netflix’s biggest contenders for an Oscar.
But right from the beginning, the 110-mile swim, which Nyad completed in her fourth attempt, raised questions. The World Open Water Swimming Association., one of the sport’s two main global organizations,...

Netflix has unveiled a trailer for Berlin-bound action drama “Kill Boksoon,” with Jeon Do-yeon, previous winner of the best actress prize at Cannes, in the starring role.
The film sees Jeon as Gil, a single woman juggling the demanding and conflicting roles of professional killer and mother to a teenage daughter.
Despite her unblemished track record as an assassin, Gil hesitates about renewing her contract at the killing company where she is employed and decides to spend time finding out what is gnawing at her daughter. But complications are never far away, such as discovering her next target is at a parent-teacher meeting.
She also finds herself in competition with another hired gun (portrayed by “Peninsula” star Koo Kyo-hwan) and under pressure from her employers, portrayed Sul Kyung-gu and E Som (“Samjin English Company Class”).
The movie will have its world premiere in the Berlinale Special section, which acts as...

SEOUL -- In a sign of the growing importance of new media in Korea's entertainment scene, production company Ahn's World Production announced Thursday that its latest project, an adaptation of popular Internet comic strip Multi-Cell Girl, will be made as a theatrical release and a 100-episode series for Digital Multimedia Broadcasting. DMB is a new platform being developed in Korea that promises high-quality pictures and CD-quality sound for cell phones and other portable devices at speeds of up to 200 km/h. E.J. LONDON -- Organizers of this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival said they have replaced the event's scheduled closing-night movie, Wong Kar-Wai's 2046, with E.J. Yong's Untold Scandal because the former film "will not finish editing until the beginning of September." The replacement film has been chosen by organizers from the existing festival program and is billed as a "magnificent South Korean remake of 'Dangerous Liaisons.' " "Obviously it's disappointing", the festival's artistic director, Shane Danielsen, said Friday in a statement. "But it's not entirely unforeseen. Ultimately, this is just one of the pitfalls of working with eccentric artistic geniuses. But we wish him well with the film -- which, when it's finally finished, will probably be even more amazing than it already is." Wong's film screened at the Festival de Cannes this year, but it gave organizers there some heart-stopping moments with the print only jetting in at the last minute before unspooling.
