I'm very surprised there isn't much information about this wonderful show anywhere online. This show aired during my final year of High School. I was SWAMPED with pressure and homework and the rest of it, and it was an extremely difficult year. Hours of homework stacked up each night, it was hell. I reserved on hour to watch TV each night as a way of coping and helping me through the pressure, continuing the work whilst watching but Tonight with Bert Newton helped big time. SO FUNNY, informative, great guests and moments and just an all round good time in front of the TV each night it aired.
SPOILER ALERT: One hilight was the "Steve Turbo" stunt which revealed that an entire TV audience and total viewing public can be DUPED over seeral nights, the point was not to believe everything you see even if convincing. The stung was performed over many nights with Derryn Hynch by Bert's side as the sceptic, and guest Steve Turbo performed apparent miracles and so called psychic abilities etc. After some series of episodes that include this guest it was revealed he was a fake and the entire audience was in on it, each time, if I recall correctly. It showed the power of deception in the media and was an awesome stunt.
But what I loved was the night to night banter, antics, discussions etc that only Bert Newton knows how to do in such a welcoming way. I remember this show with a very fond heart. Thank you Bert Newton. It was a very tough year for me and this was one of the lights that got me through.
