Unique and impressive
Woodyanders29 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Vampire Vanquo (a commanding and charismatic Chris Payne Gilbert) kidnaps Manananaan (an excellent portrayal by Philomene Long). Her twin sister Mara (ably played by writer/director Pegarty Long) goes to Ireland to rescue her. While in Ireland Mara encounters everything from a mad scientist to a leprechaun to assorted fairies.

Pegary Long keeps the offbeat and intriguing story moving along at a steady pace, pays loving homage to classic horror cinema, offers a flavorsome evocation of a fascinating fantasy world, and does an ace job of crafting an enchanting dreamy atmosphere. The fine acting from the bang-up cast holds this picture together, with especially stand-out contributions from Vincent V. Coppola as the irascible Dr. O'Nosital, Norman Victor as his bumbling oaf assistant Gore, Mary Coghlan as dear Aunt Molly, and Herbert B. Fishberg as helpful leprechaun Ulysses. The handsome cinematography by Roderick E. Stevens offers a wealth of striking visuals. Vincent Gilllioz's harmonic score does the tuneful trick. Best of all, this film has its own distinctly idiosyncratic identity because of the inspired and absorbing way it explores Irish culture and folklore. Recommended viewing for those seeking something different and original.

The Movie I never knew I Didn't Want
bmaecrowley7 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I looked at the reviews for this movie when I picked it up at Hastings, the outside cover was alluring, the name Manananaan really got my attention and it sounded like a fun 90 minute B movie to enjoy with my mom for a girl's night. Boy, was I in for a surprise.

That being said I genuinely like indie movies that offer offbeat characters, or the true "visualization of poetry", or you know at least the ability to show me that the post crew was capable and can edit. As a film student who has seen a large variety of experimental film and the growth of my classmates and other large directors and writers I feel I am qualified to say they probably kicked their butts to make this movie.

Cheesy B movies are amazing. But this was something else.

I can appreciate the hard work that is put into any sort of film production, however there are literally parts of this movie that are unwatchable.

If I never have to hear that the kidnapped twins' scream as she wakes up from her coffin again it'll be too soon. The second or third time this happened my mom told me to have fun and finish the movie by myself. I did. I managed to finish it. I wish I hadn't.

Were there parts of this movie I enjoyed? Yes (there wasn't nearly enough screen time for the vampires honestly), but those parts don't negate the fact that the "dream sequence" is a bunch of colored circles dancing on the screen between cuts of badly lit forest shenanigans. It goes on for what 3, 4?, minutes of this. No dialogue, the same looping sound again and again. Then the screaming scene again and again, it wasn't even her being filmed from different angles or even edited differently, it was the same 1:30 seconds of her being horrified over and over to the point where I just wanted it all to end right there.

I don't understand why the editing was so disjointed and genuinely hard to watch, it wasn't for an artistic flair it was just...bad. Oh and the wig...that wig was an interesting choice. I think money could have been saved on the wigs and put towards some better pre and post production planning or a better editing program.

If you do decide to watch this movie, I'm so sorry about the 90 minutes of your life you're about to lose. But rejoice, the few good parts you'll see are both genuinely funny and interesting but will be smothered in the hodge podge of bad editing, bad editing choices, bad lighting, and all around jilted feeling you get when you realize that this isn't even The Room levels bad, this is a whole new level of Art house Indie b.s bad that you were never prepared for.

Please note I an feeling both bitter and jilted as this was neither the bad funny horror b movie it appears to have the potential of being nor the high fantasy adventure b movie it made itself out to be in both reviews and cover materials/description.

I just wish the reviews were viewer oriented because this was legitimately an awful experience.

fun movie

Terrific movie. Original and with both a sense of humor and mystery. I wish it the best of luck. It is shot on a shoestring budget, but somehow the director managed to extend that shoestring to Ireland for location shots. How did they do it? Great atmospheric value as well. It is a different take on the vampire genre. I learned a few things myself. I am waiting for it to get a release so I can see it again. It's a tough market. When I saw it, there was a packed house. everyone seemed to enjoy it as much as I did. The amount of laughter was spontaneous and surprising. That told me the wit that accompanied the serious content was intentional. Bravo.

The magic of poetry
marianadietl1 March 2011
The magic of poetry is portrayed in this film. The magic of poetry and the magic of Ireland, which in certain instances can mean the same thing. "The Irish Vampire Goes West" has the feel of an Irish fable. An old-world feel. An old-world feel which is almost old-fashioned in the days of i-Pads and Twitter, but necessary, more necessary than ever. We need the woods and the green marshlands of this film, we need the tombs and the underground chambers, we need the magic of believing that anything is possible, that vampires can show up out of nowhere to transport us to faraway places and suck out the poetry and love from us, only to return us from our journey more invigorated and inspired as ever; we need the innocence and fantasy of feeling that on any dark night a group of merry troubadours may lead us to unforeseen places. The Long sisters –Philomene and Pegarty- give an enchanting performance as Mara and Manananaan, supported by a spectacular background -Ireland, no less- lovely music and quirky well-written prose. All in all I found this film captivating, a metaphor representing the fleeting inspiration of poetry.

A wonderful trip thru the fantastic, the ghoulish and the eerie
MillB13 February 2011
Amazing, spell-binding. Mysterious.

Like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, this film brings you inside its strange world of reality and doesn't let go. It chokes your soul and twists you into its tangled web of a brand new kitchy phantasmagoric horror tale.

Take the ride.

You will be glad you did. Why don't others make movies like this? Because they can't. Back in the golden age of silent films, audiences were held captives as the stories unfolded before their eyes.

This fabulous film has the rich tradition of silent films in its grasp as well as the forward "indie" direction that movies should be taking. This film has twists and turns and flashbacks and fantasy. There are vampires and fairies and Ireland.

Take the time to see this wonderful romp of a movie.
