The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced today that Sylvester Stallone will receive their prestigious Montecito Award for his critically acclaimed role in Ryan Coogler’s Creed. Given to a person in the entertainment industry whose has made a great contribution to film, the award will be presented to him at a ceremony on Tuesday, February 9th at the historic Arlington Theater.
“Sylvester Stallone’s performance in Creed has reminded us of what a true talent he is and what a joy it is to share in his successes as the many beloved characters he has created. Since he first hit the silver screen as Rocky Balboa nearly four decades ago, he has been a force in the industry both on film and behind the scenes. Buenos Aires -- Argentine couples recovered their dominance of the world's top tango dancing competition, sweeping both the Salon Tango and Stage Tango categories as the annual festival drew to a close.
Cristian Sosa and Maria Sciuto won Tuesday night's stage final with a score of 8.42, followed by four other Argentine couples at the top of an international field. Five Argentine couples also came out on top in the Salon competition the night before, besting a total of 487 couples from 32 countries.
Couples from Japan and Russia, Colombia and the United States have frequently wowed the judges in previous finals, but this year none managed to impress the panel as much as the hometown couples who danced before thousands of fans in the Luna Park stadium in the Argentine capital.

After eight weeks, multiple injuries and countless meltdowns, we've finally made it to the "Dancing With the Stars" Season 14 semi-finals.
There's only one problem: Everyone is just a little too good. All four semi-finalists -- Maria Menounos, Donald Driver, William Levy and Katherine Jenkins -- deserve to win based on their dancing. It's the most closely-matched "Dancing With the Stars" semi-finals ever. The show may be low on ratings, but this season, it's got more than enough talent.
However, for one contestant, the pressure was just too much to handle this week. Former frontrunner Katherine felt the heat of the competition. When the opera singer flubbed her ending, she was overcome with emotion and immediately broke down on the dance floor. Her partner Mark Ballas and host Tom Bergeron tried to console the British beauty, but she was still pretty shaken up during the judges' comments.

Dancing with the Stars Season 14 Semifinals: Katherine Jenkins Injures Back
Dancing with the Stars moved one step closer to crowning the champ of Season 14. In the semifinal round, the remaining 4 contestants competed for spot in the finals. In yesterday’s article I said there would be show stoppers, but I meant exceptional performance elements. Not the buckets of tears and injuries that seemed to top the leaderboard.
Rough childhoods, bad breakups and hard times dominated the video packages, leading most of the contestants (save for William) to cry before their dances. Derek Hough suffered a back injury during rehearsals and it couldn’t even be confirmed before show time that he would actually dance. Maria Menounos is always injured so nothing new there. They told viewers that three doctors were on the Dancing with the Stars set Monday to help see them through. Then there was the debacle Katherine and...

Over the last couple of months, we’ve seen eight charming couples lose their grips on the coveted Mirrorball Trophy — I can still see the tracks of Sherri Shepherd’s tears in my mind — but with the Season 14 semifinals upon us — and one couple about to fall short of the finale (and the freestyle round) — the potential for even greater heartbreak was downright palpable.
For my money, any of the four remaining celebs could easily land in the confetti-covered winner’s circle next week. Yet one teeny-tiny misstep, wardrobe malfunction or semi-bungled lift (or even a cranky judge) could erase...

It wouldn't be "Dancing With the Stars" if there wasn't at least a little Chmerkovskiy drama. We all know that Maks has a temper and the producers don't always give him the most endearing edit -- remember last season's ballroom blowout with judge Len Goodman? -- but I never thought that I would hear him say the words, "You're making me look like a terrorist."
Last season, Maks' partner Hope Solo never quite lived up to the potential the judges saw in her, and the duo consistently ranked at the bottom of the leaderboard, which eventually led to Maks' outburst. This week, it looked like the hot-tempered Chmerkovskiy was on a similar path of public destruction.
Well, maybe the judges learned their lessons because this week, Len, Carrie Ann and Bruno all praised Maks' partner, Melissa Gilbert, for her best performances of the competition. However, I wasn't so convinced.

Even though Donald Driver wanted to be the first celebrity to receive judge Len Goodman's first 10 of "Dancing With the Stars" Season 14, that honor went to another contestant -- Maria Menounos.
However, it wasn't an easy week for Maria and her partner Derek Hough. Despite having the most hysterical/annoying/maniacal laugh ever, Maria wasn't laughing during rehearsals when she passive-aggressively told Derek, "Sorry I'm not attractive enough for you."
Whatever tension Maria and Derek had in rehearsals, it carried over quite effectively into the ballroom as their "Romeo & Juliet" meets "Twilight" paso doble earned the duo the first perfect score of the season.
This week also marked the first time this season that the remaining couples split into teams to compete against each other -- Team Tango (Katherine, Roshon, Maria and Jaleel) and Team Paso (Melissa, William and Donald). Team Tango managed to squeak past with a victory,...

Dancing with the Stars Week 7: Classical Night Brings First Perfect Score, Judges Slam Melissa Gilbert
It was Classical Night on Dancing with the Stars, and it rang in the first perfect score of 30 of the season. The leaderboard now has Maria Menounos and partner Derek Hough sitting high atop it as the judges awarded them three 10s for their vampire themed paso doble. Derek’s tension building choreography characterized a fabulous paso which was perfectly executed by Maria. In her rehearsal package Maria cried (for nothing) about not being a dancer like so many of Derek’s past partners, (which like it or not, acknowledges that Derek has indeed been given a good lot of ringers!)
Not so happy were Melissa Gilbert and partner Maks Chmerkovskiy, who took triple punches from the judges for their Argentine Tango. See video below. It was a rough week for the pair who...

With vivid memories of our celebs shakin’ their groove things to the energetic sounds of rock and Motown over the past few performance episodes, the tricky U-turn into the comparatively serene strains of classical music for Week 7 of Dancing With the Stars had the potential to feel a tad disconcerting.
Would Mozart or Vivaldi inevitably bring out the best in opera star Katherine Jenkins? Would this shift in mood expose the Achilles’ heels of certain testosterone-laden counterparts (i.e., Donald Driver and William Levy)?
One thing was certain: With the numbers of dancing duos continuing to dwindle, far more airtime...

Dancing with the Stars Latin Week Rankings: Katherine Jenkins and William Levy Tango To The Top
Dancing with the Stars’ Latin Week kicked off to the sultry sounds of Santana, which gave way to some of the sultriest dances we will see in Season 14. True confession: I had a hard time facing Week 5 of Dancing With the Stars without the presence of ebullient quote machine Sherri Shepherd. But there was no time for tears as the nine remaining couples prepared to Samba, Salsa and Tango the night away. That’s right, welcome to Latin Night, or as I like to call it, the episode in which William Levy shook his ample bon-bon.

This week on "Dancing With the Stars," rock 'n' roll (and obsessive amounts of guy-liner) took center stage in the ballroom, and the judges were not so impressed, as they dished out some of their lowest scores -- and harshest critiques -- of the season.
Golden child Katherine Jenkins had her worst dance of the season, while the usually exuberant Sherri Shepherd must have exhausted all of her energy rocking out to opening band Kiss.
Yes, you read that correctly -- Kiss. Gene Simmons and Co. were causing quite a ruckus in the ballroom. In fact, did Kiss bring their own celebrity entourage because tonight's live show had even more famous faces than usual, including John Stamos, Little Richard and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Looking totally disinterested, J.Love told Tom Bergeron that she was there to support her favorite dancer, Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Hopefully, this means Maks will be guest-starring on "The Client List" soon.

The last in this short series of films rated Nc-17 is arguably the most controversial—the film that has sparked the most debate and engraved itself in the minds of so many viewers and critics. Like Midnight Cowboy (1969), Last Tango in Paris (1972) was released before Nc-17 was in the MPAA’s rating repertoire, so it was originally rated X. Also like Midnight Cowboy, Last Tango made it to the Academy Awards despite (or perhaps as a result of) the storm of opposition and criticism it inspired. While Last Tango in Paris didn’t win any in any of the categories it was nominated for in 1974 (Jack Lemmon won Best Actor for Save the Tiger and George Roy Hill won Best Director for The Sting), the film made a name for itself and shows no sign of being forgotten in the foreseeable future.

Alex De La Iglesia recently commented on his chosen screen pair for the still-in-production La Chispa de La Vida, “I know it's an unbelievable starring couple: the top Latin representative in the Spanish-speaking star system and a Spaniard comedian. I know they do not match up, but because of this they're going to be the perfect couple. I chose them because I am fed up with all that is conventional, I am tired of films having to be coherent and I believe it is going to be very funny to have them together.” Apparently the filmmaker hasn't heard of either Javier Bardem or Penélope Cruz, as the big star he is referring to is Salma Hayek and comedian José Mota. Unlike his previous films, this one wasn't scripted by De La Iglesia or long time collaborator Jorge Guerricaechevarría, but Randy Feldman (Tango & Cash). More specific plot details were revealed: Mota plays Roberto,...

She was just 19 when she starred in that movie. In her later years, Maria Schneider expressed regret about appearing in the film, saying ‘I felt a little raped’ by costar Marlon Brando and director Bernardo Bertolucci. She was especially good opposite Jack Nicholson in The Passenger (1975) for director Michelangelo Antonioni, but her career never went much further.
From The Los Angeles Times:
Maria Schneider, the French actress who appeared opposite Marlon Brando in “Last Tango in Paris,” the 1972 movie whose strong sexual content stirred international controversy, has died. She was 58.
Schneider died in Paris on Thursday after a long illness, her family told Agence France Presse.
She was a voluptuous, 19-year-old newcomer with long curly brown hair framing a youthful face when she was cast in writer-director Bernardo Bertolucci’s “Last Tango in Paris,” in which she played a young engaged Parisian woman who is looking for an apartment to rent.

Director Bernardo Bertolucci is saddened by the death of French actress Maria Schneider, because he never got the chance to apologise for submitting her to the explicit sex scenes in his controversial classic Last Tango In Paris.
The actress, who lost her battle with cancer on Thursday, was cast as Marlon Brando's lover in the controversial 1972 film when she was just 19.
The romantic drama, about an affair between a young Parisian woman and a middle-aged man, featured an infamous and graphic anal sex scene - which Schneider later revealed left her traumatised for years.
Italian filmmaker Bertolucci regrets falling out with Schneider over the role, and wishes he had made more of an effort to make peace with the actress while she was alive - because only now does he understand how much the controversy affected her at such a young age.
He says, "Her death has come too early, before I could give her a tender embrace and tell her that I was as tied to her as I was at the start and apologise to her at least once.
"The strong and creative relationship that we had during the filming of Last Tango became poisoned with the passing of time. Maria accused me of having robbed her of her youth and only today am I wondering whether there wasn't some truth to that.
"The truth is she was too young to withstand the impact of the film's unpredictable and brutal success. Marlon hid behind his impenetrable privacy and the full weight of promotion fell on Maria and myself."...

In honor of the opening of the film Burlesque, starring Cher, Christina Aguilera and Stanley Tucci, the Movie Geeks are presenting what we feel are the best motion picture musicals.
Honorable Mention: Mary Poppins
“Practically Perfect in Every Way”, this is how the incomparably magical nanny Mary Poppins describes herself with nary a boastful smirk on a revealing tape measure in the still-charming 1964 Disney classic musical set in post-Victorian London circa 1910. Mary Poppins is the first movie I can remember seeing in a theater as a child I still feel genuine warmth about this movie as an adult. Such was the impact of Julie Andrews in her big screen debut, as she epitomizes the title character with equal quantities of starch and sugar. There are so many delightful scenes in Mary Poppins that it’s hard to choose which to highlight, though one of the best ones has to be...
