People keep taking this too seriously - lighten up!
SarahL118 May 2006
I hadn't heard much about this movie, so when I came to see it, it was hype free. Which I think served it better. i had no expectations I just wanted a bit of a laugh. I got one. Though their are weak points to the story, and afew plot holes to boot, some people have missed the point watching this. There are at least two damning reviews on this site - one by a filmmaker I respect - but I have to disagree with his view.

This film does not take itself seriously and was intended to get the same reaction from the audience. The "bad" acting was deliberately hammy because that was the idea. And you have to award points to any director who manages to turn a show into a weapon in on scene. I loved that moment.

All in all, not a great movie. But it served its purpose and entertained me for the night. Lighten up people! Amber Moelter was wonderful and Richard was good too. Bond villain!

Lucy makes it worth watching
jeannieprewitt30 October 2016
The special effects are horrible. I've seen better effects on the original Nintendo. The acting is eh. I wasn't expecting it to be great, so no disappointment there. It felt like the movie was made for superficial enjoyment. Don't try to overthink or peel back any layers.

The movie starts out slow. You do not get to know the characters very well. I wish they had given us a background to add depth to the characters. I spent the first part of the movie trying to figure out why I was watching it. A little more than half way through, the surprise (main reason I watched the whole thing) is Lucy. Lucy blended in with the rest of the boring actors at first. Then she changed.

I love Lucy.

Don't avoid Trashhouse because of bad reviews. Watch it yourself and form your own opinion.

Too much hype, not enough substance
biglabowski6621 March 2006
First off, I commend Pat Higgins on having the balls to write, produce and direct his own feature film. For this, and this alone, Mr. Higgins got an extra star. Having said that, I had read a lot of good things about this movie on the net, and despite a promising start, it failed to live up to the expectations and hype that those reviews generated. Unfortunately for all concerned, Higgins seems to have spunked what little funds he obviously did have on a cast and crew who simply fall short of the mark - and by some distance.

Leading lady Amber Moelter's performance is hit-and-miss and she appears to have been cast for no other reason that the fact that she's American but her performance is nowhere near as bad as her "leading man" Tom Wontner - a truly wooden turn from someone who seemingly has a very high opinion of himself. Check out his official website for proof. The fact he calls himself "Tom Wontner - Actor" on his website - yes, I was sad enough to check out these bozos if only to see if they were real or not - could be worthy of prosecution under the trades description act. Likewise Hannah Speller - awful - and Oli Wilkinson - another hit-and-miss performance.

On the plus side, Sam Burke is terrific and Richard Collins rocks as the bad guy while some of the minor players are quite impressive, but it's not enough. Add to this the poor quality of sound, poor cinematography, a lack of props, some really crap special effects and a set that has been lifted out of an old folks home and you get the picture.

To end on a positive, the script was witty and the idea was neat. Just a shame that the execution was so lousy. Next time, steer clear of the CGI guys.

Laughably amateurish
Leofwine_draca2 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
TRASHHOUSE is an incredibly cheap looking and boring indie horror flick from Britain, it pains me to say. It's another film with a Big Brother-style plot in which a group of contestants are locked in a house and then constantly filmed, before being assailed by various supernatural entities. This kind of set-up was done much better in the likes of My Little Eye et al and it doesn't help that the execution is extremely amateurish here, laughably so in fact.

So bad it's offensive
chloesullivan20111 July 2012
I watch a lot of low budget independent movies and am sick to the stomach of the argument "if you lower your expectations" and "it's low budget so you have to cut it some slack" or "take it for what it is" to support a positive review blatantly written by someone involved in the the film, or someone involved with someone involved in the film.

Trash House is bad. Really bad. It's so bad it will actually offend you. It certainly offended me. Everything that can possibly go wrong in a movie is present here. The script makes no sense. The acting is bad. The SFX are atrocious. The sets that can be found, like a hotel room, are built (I watched the behind the scenes). The main set, the house of the title, is a blatant tiny house on a normal housing estate instead of some hi-tech monstrosity. So even on an economic level of where and what to spend the money on the film is a bust.

It'll make you feel like you want to scrub your skull out with soap.

So bad it brought my mate out in a rash
acleon6 May 2006
Please read this - it could save you time, money and mental anguish. I've watched some dog poo in my time, but this one takes the worm-ridden biscuit. Taking into account some of the the other comments posted about this film, I can only assume they're associated with the film, mates of people associated with the film or possibly four-thumbed inbreeds. The concept of the movie was an interesting one, but this was not backed up by the script/dialogue, which would have been more suited to an episode of Hollyoaks (if it was acted by "special" people). It's impossible to sit on the fence regarding the acting, as it was so wooden I would have been picking splinters out of my arse for a week. As per the aforementioned "special" people, only they would find the "special" effects to be "special". I only wish that I could have given it a negative score to counteract the blatant exaggeration of the insiders / inbreeds that have given this film a good review. Any comparisons to Bad Taste / Braindead are laughable, the only similarities being the size of the budget and not how they used it. On a separate note, my friend has thankfully now recovered from the unfortunate skin problem.

An okay effort
PallySally1 July 2008
An odd little movie that promises a lot but in the end its grasp falls someway short of its reach. As lo-budget films go, it has some strong positives - A funny script, some excellent cameos, ideas and invention - but it is unfortunately let down by some poor special effects and some terrible acting from three of the four leads. Amber Moelter, Tom Wontner and Hannah Speller are very wooden and not very convincing and are easily out shone by the rest of the cast.

It's a shame really, as the opening 5-10 minutes promise a great deal. His follow up, Hellbride, is a much better movie and I look forward to seeing Killer, Killer shortly.

Bloody good fun
rikkiebags29 September 2006
By their very nature, you have to extend a lot of goodwill toward a low-budget film. Sets will creak, the acting may not always be of top quality and the special effects may well be questionable at best. If you watch a low-budget film with expectations of losing yourself in roller-coaster ride ala Kind Kong, you're probably going to be disappointed, but approached with the correct attitude there can be an awful lot to enjoy and admire, and even find inspirational.

TrashHouse is a lower than low budget film written, produced and directed by Pat Higgins, and this is his full length feature debut recently released on DVD by Screen Entertainment.

Simply put, five strangers, gathered together through the wonders of computer profiling are invited to a location to participate in the testing of a new implant that allows the user to live out and create their dreams within their environment. Each guinea pig takes to their role differently; one lives out his greatest sexual fantasies, another conjures a technological environment and sets about curing cancer, one can't think of anything more interesting to do than sit in a chair and have money flutter about around him, and so on. As events continue, one of the lab-rats is not who they initially appeared, and has murderous intentions...

There's no denying that there's zero budget going on here, and TrashHouse sometimes collapses under the weight of its own ambition, but ultimately this is to its credit and adds to the charm. Sure the CGI is laughably amateurish at times, the locations are sparser than sparse, the acting is at times questionable, but what carries the film is an originality that doesn't play out simply and predictably from A to B. Pat's script has flourishes in it that makes the 80-odd minutes breeze by with nary a finger hovering over fast forward button, as so often happens in micro-budget films that need to extend their running length to something respectable by adding terminally unnecessary scenes.

There's a sense of humour running through the film that frequently raises a smile, whether it be the two riffing security guys (sat in front of nothing more hi-tech than a single PC monitor), or Lucy's recreation of a 50s sitcom environment. In black and white. With a laughter track.

Approach TrashHouse in the right mood with the right level of expectation and there's a lot to enjoy here. Moreover, there's evident talent at work as well - Pat's direction is assured and you can't help but feel that if he had more money to play with and less need to concentrate on running the entire production then he'd be able to conjure up something special.

I, for one, look forward to the next productions from Jinx Media.

Well worth the wait
crazyhorsefc23 January 2005
I finally got to see this movie over the weekend and it's well worth a watch - especially if you're a fan of zombie flicks.

The script is very inventive and has some very funny lines. However, don't go along expecting to see Shaun of the Dead - this has more in common with the original Dawn of the Dead than anything, with just as much bite and originality.

There are some strong performances too, especially from Richard Collins - who steals the show with his evil turn - and Sam Burke as Della. Comedian Gary Delaney also turns in a very impressive cameo.

Writer/Director Pat Higgins can be extremely satisfied with his debut and I am already looking forward to TrashHouse 2.

Funny, Violent And Intelligent
JMconnell10 March 2006
From the very beginning, TrashHouse makes it obvious what kind of a film you're about to watch. Snappy, funny dialogue and violence, all before the opening credits.

The plot is quite original, revolving around five people, apparently the most balanced people in the UK, invited to a house to take part in an experiment. They will have a chip fitted that gives them the power to create anything they can imagine, between the hours of 7.30 am and 10.00 pm. The catch? Someone isn't who they claim to be, and things are about to take a turn for the dangerous.

A fantastic debut from Pat Higgins. The dialogue is well written, and the ideas presented in the script are fantastic. There's plenty of the red stuff for gore hounds, a few naked ladies, and some great music. The only letdown is that some of the CGI effects are rather poor, but that's obviously down to the low budget nature of the movie. The performances are all very good.

I really hope someone gives Pat Higgins a decent budget for his next film.

Ambitious if not entirely successful
Sensate18 July 2005
A nice attempt at the classic locked house storyline. Let down by CGI on a shoe string and rather neon pink blood but notable for its performances... including a strong turn by Amber Moelter as the defiant anti-scream queen and Tom Wontner as the sensitive love interest. Would have been better played more psychological than blood and gore, but the wish fulfillment machine is an interesting "MacGuffin" although bringing together the "most stable" individuals in the country and locking them in a house is bound to be a recipe for disaster. Go for loonies like Big Brother, much safer. Fun and a respectable "stab" at the horror genre.

A reasonable low budget horror effort!
smiley-3225 February 2006
Trash House.. The new horror flick from Pat Higgins. I saw the DVD not long ago.. I must admit, it's not a bad movie.. Although, it's low budget.. Well, what can you do when you're shooting a film on a low budget scale..? The answer is anything really. So long you got a camera, a few crew members and your actors.. That's it! You're ready to roll!

For Pat Higgins, he's done this film like Sam Raimi, Robert Rodriguez and Scott Phillips. All these directors shot their films at a low budget scale. ..And that's how they started their careers as directors.

Trash House in a sense is well worth a watch.. It's about five people who take part in some kind of virtual reality experiment. Only to realize there's something more to it, than just virtual reality experience. The characters from the likes of Lucy Sweet (Amber Moelter), David (Tom Wortner), Charlotte (Hannah Speller), James (Richard Collins), and Della (Sam Burke).. They were OK! But I would've thought there would be something more..

After all, the idea of the special effects. It was good. At least it comes to show that anything can be done at a shoestring budget. I think the director Pat Higgins has proved his point. Well, he did it, and he succeeded.

I can't complain. This movie kept me glued right until the end. I reckon if Pat Higgins kept that up, he could soon be joining the ranks of directors such as Robert Rodriguez, Sam Raimi and Scott Phillips (who did the film THE STINK OF FLESH for $3000..)

Anyway, it's not bad.. It's was well worth a watch. Great effort! 8 out of 10!

Very good idea
louis_chawner5 July 2007
If you like low budget horror films, then you will probably like this film. You can tell the budget is low in parts, but the idea and the story are very inventive. Overall, I really liked this film. The main actress was very good. Some of the acting from other cats members was a bit dodgy, but isn't that part of the fun of watching B movies? It is for me anyway. I thought the idea of dropping in the scenes with the two security guards every now and then was great, and they actually provided some of the funniest bits of the film. With a slightly bigger budget, this film could have been much better, mainly as the idea behind the film could have been portrayed with better visuals, i.e. when the people in the house are in their rooms, a bigger budget would have allowed for possibly expanding this a little. Having said that, I loved the simplicity of the guy whose fantasy it was just to shag birds. You don't need effects for that.

One goofy cult classic!
ghostlybride30 June 2005
Fantastically funny and original... Pat is a brilliant script writer and his ideas are truly unique. Keep 'em coming Pat and get those budgets expanding each year! TrashHouse makes me laugh and I love its concept - the house, the characters in it and the electronic chip in the neck. Don't know why I chose the word goofy to describe it, I think it's because it somehow has a quirky element to it, but a damn good horror flick at the same time.

That's why I chose to get involved and I'm glad I did. The cast and crew were great fun to work with - I'd definitely do it all again (maybe in summer next time Pat)!

Enjoyable micro budget epic
alistairc_20008 November 2011
This is a review of the DVD

This is one of those times it is great to love British Horror. Five people are invited to a house. They are given a proposal test a product out and get a large cash pay off. They go into the house to test the product which rather nicely is a way to control you environment by means of brain waves. Something goes wrong and a maniac gets all the power and gives the others in the house an ultimatum. Fight for your life or die.

Its an ambitious movie that really needs a bit more cash to do some of the plot ideas the justice they deserve. If you can put up with the lack of cash you have a nicely paced horror flick with zombies, gore, romance, heartache and a lot of violence towards the end. Also there are loads of extras which are very good as well. This is an okay DVD.
