Thorough

This is a feature-length documentary on the Special Edition DVD of Spider-Man 2, and is a making-of on said film. It consists of interviews, behind the scenes footage, clips of both flicks and panels from the comics. Everyone here has got stuff to say, and this is informative and detailed. It goes over every aspect of production and post on something as epic as the sequel in question, and explains the effort put into the designs, the effects, sound, etc. The whole thing is split into twelve parts, so you don't have to watch the entire two hours, and each of these chapters are confined to exploring their specific area, and the title of them(for a complete run-down, simply look at the Trivia page for this) lets you know which that is. This is all well-edited, and the pace is fitting. You get good insight into the creative process that goes into putting such a big movie. The ending is funny, and very candid and natural. There is no objectionable material in this, apart from restating the disturbing notion that Raimi gets an inordinate amount of pleasure out of throwing stuff at, and hitting, his actors for shots and sequences. I recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about the subject. 7/10

How can something this great be TOO long?

MAKING THE AMAZING is a superb, thoroughly-detailed documentary about the making of SPIDER-MAN 2. Fortunately, for those with ADD, the documentary is nicely broken up into several topical chapters. Interviews with everyone on the cast & crew nicely illuminate what it was like to make this massive sequel. In fact, the documentary begins on a refreshingly bold note with Sam Raimi expressing doubt that he's going to succeed. Right off the bat, MAKING THE AMAZING informs us that this won't be yet another PR-friendly lovefest. It's an incredibly detailed and informative "making of," vastly superior to everything on the first SPIDER-MAN DVD.

I'll never understand people who whine that a DVD has too many bonus features or that documentaries are too long. That's like saying a library has too many books or iTunes has too many songs. This isn't the main attraction. It's all background information for you to learn more about later. And for the curious, you can never learn enough.

way too long

this 2 hour and 6 minute documentary on the making of "Spider-Man 2) can be found on the second disc of the 2-DVD special edition of the aforementioned movie. It covers everything about the production. Story, character, visual & costume design, direction, the custom made 'Spider-cam", the stunt work, visual & practical effects, the sound and music are all included her. As well as footage from the premiere and what everyone learned from the experience. Which is all well and good, but at over 2 hours, it's also repetitive (how many times must we hear that Alfred Molina hates stunt work, 5 times was enough for me, but it went on). Plus every single time Kirsten Dunst spoke, she was so stupid that I felt like hitting her with a brick. A good documentary should very seldom by over 90 minutes IF that.

My Grade: C-
