Have seen a few episodes of this show now, and I don't understand why people would enlist this crew to overhaul anything... unless you particularly disliked the people you were nominating.
I have seen more than one person reduced to tears by these makeovers.
Perhaps this is meant to be a comedy?
I honesty think that these makeovers would reduce the value of the homes, and they are not all that easy to reverse the damage.
Have given the show 1-star for quality of the makeovers, however maybe it deserves many stars as it can be quite compelling due to the audacity of the designers and the shock value
