Very funny and a few years ahead of its time

I saw this at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood as part of a festival a few years ago (this was before the current fad of religion-bashing), and was a hit with the audience. It must have been good, since I remember it after a few years.

Actually a kind of sweet/funny love story between a boy and a girl, with a wandering stranger who helps the kid lose his religion so he can get the girl. A different take on the subject, as the religious element is used strictly to help love blossom.

A little bit of a parody of "Touched by an Angel," for sure, but far more original than that show ever was, and much more than simply a parody. It's not harsh like Bill Maher is (although I think he's funny, too), but freethinking is definitely the hero of the movie. I guess in movie terms, the theme is: "Instead of believing in god, believe in yourself to achieve love."

That sounds a little highbrow, because it was very funny and not preachy (forgive the pun).
